“Wonderful beach view”
Reviewed 2 June 2012

We stayed 4 nights at the Aston Mahana May 25-59, 2012. I booked directly with Aston as most of the VRBO listings wanted a minimum of 5 days. The nice thing about VRBO is you can see the room you're going to get. We booked an upgraded condo -- and it was great. The view from the room is amazing! You won't be disappointed. One thing to remember -- you cannot swim directly in front of the hotel. There are signs up that say coral beach and to go 125 - 175 yards in either direction to swim/snorkel. This really wasn't a problem for us. Snorkelling out about 125 yards to the left (in front of Duke's Beach House restaurant) was amazing. We saw a lot of sea life including an octopus!
Parking can be somewhat bothersome as there seems to be a lack of parking spaces! There is a great grocery store (Times) just on the main road before you get to the condo and you can buy everything you need to cook your meals in your condo. Having a washer/dryer was a bonus!

Recently spent 6 nights at the Mahana and it was absolutely perfect! My husband and I went to Hawaii for the first time to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. I did ALOT of research on hotels, restaurants, excursions, etc. to make it the best it could be. I was not disappointed in my selection of the Mahana. I booked it about 4 months in advance on the Aston website and got a special: pay for 3 nights, get one free. When we checked in, we were upgraded to a corner two bedroom, #403. Didn't need the extra bedroom, but it was nice having extra space and the corner unit. The unit was decorated in beautiful but understated Hawaiian theme and everthing was updated. We loved having a full kitchen, though we ate out dinner every night. We also took advantage of the in suite washer and dryer which was so convenient. My favorite part was the view. Nothing between us and the ocean. Looking out over both islands of Lanai and Molokai at sunset while sipping a glass of wine on our lanai was probably the highlight of the trip. Even though it was air conditioned, we loved sleeping with the lanai door open and listening to the sound of the waves crash on shore. There was always a cool breeze so never hot.
Even though there is not an onsite restaurant or bar, there is a grocery store across the street and a snack wagon onsite which sells a variety of things from breakfast pastries to hot dogs, smoothies, and espresso drinks. The pool and spa were very well maintained and clean. And we were just steps to the beach. it was a very quick drive to Lahaina town, Whalers Village and Kapalua.
If you are looking for a large resort with a lot of amenities, this isn't it. But if you want amazing views, beachfront, pool, and kitchen, washer/dryer, and your own quiet lanai, I cannot recommend the Mahana at Kaanapali enough.

As others have mentioned, the Aston Mahana is awesome. All rooms face the water, plenty of parking and friendly staff. We stayed in room 917 and my family was over-joyed when we opened the front door. The unit is updated with a modern kitchen and bathroom (stainless, up level bathroom fixtures and new/clean carpet). You almost want to just stay in the room and chill hard. This is more of an adult hotel/resort versus the place next door that has 400 baby strollers and elementary school kids running rampant. Wifi speed is okay (but unfortunately you are connecting via Hawaiian Oceanic). You get free movie and PS2 rentals too. This hotel is clearly nicer than the 2 resorts on either side. Oh yeah, there are several nice propane grills/picnic areas around.

Some negatives: the master bed is large (king size) but gave me terrible neck pain every morning, the 2 tvs are flat screens but of the el cheapo variety (the kind you buy at a gas station), the pool is tiny and there isn't an on-site gym. Also, why not just add the daily $10 charge to the quoted room price instead of placing that burden on the check in girl?

These are minor complaints. All in all, I'd stay here again (would try hard to get this unit again). The hotel lives up to its TripAdvisor rating.

Room Tip: Higher level rooms are best. Absolutely would not want a bottom floor room (no privacy/everyone can...

This facility is wonderful. The location is perfect. The staff is very friendly and helpful. My wife and I could not have been more please with our stay. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Going to sleep and waking up to the sounds of waves breaking against the shore can not be beat and the sun sets were just great.

Mahana is the second best condo that we have stayed in, This includes multiple condos on each island. (Outrigger on Kauai is #1 due to the newness of the facility), Facility is maintained in an excellent condition and the units are great. Met many fellow visitors there and everyone was in awe in the facility. Staff exceeded our expectations and went beyond their jobs to help everyone out. On Maui if you want the best buy for your buck check this out. EVERY UNIT IS OCEAN FRONT!.

Room Tip: Restaurant is at anothe Aston property

Having stayed at the Mahana two years ago my wife and I had to return. Once again we were not disappointed. This time we stayed on the 6th floor. Our one bedroom unit was large and spacious. Although many owners claim that the one bedroom units accommodate up to four people it is a much better fit for two adults and perhaps two small children. Best fit, two adults. Four adults with only one bathroom would be difficult. Our kitchen had all the essentials and was complete. We found the room on the website "Vacation Rental By Owner (VRBO)". Last stay we booked our unit through a Maui travel agency and paid considerably more for an identical room. You should know that each of the rooms are privately owned, however, those owners wishing to rent their rooms go through various rental services to do so. It is a "smoke free" environment throughout the inside of the hotel. Choosing a room with daily maid services costs considerably more. This time we chose not to have daily service and saved a significant amount of money for a two week stay. Halfway through our stay we did hire maid service for one day at $65.00. Every room at the Mahana sits directly on the beautiful Ka'anapali beach. You can't get any closer to the ocean without getting wet. If you like the noise of the "crashing ocean" this is it. Yes, it can be noisy, loud and bothersome at night. During the daylight it should not be a problem unless you are a day sleeper. This unique style of a building situated on the beach is one of very few in the area. The one bedroom units we prefer greet you with a floor to ceiling window in the living room and bedroom. The bedroom door goes directly outside onto the veranda overlooking the beach. The sunset each evening is spectacular. The staff at the hotel is always very friendly and helpful. There currently are no resort fees or parking fees. Parking your car outside the hotel is convenient. There is a nice size swimming pool and spa. The hotel does not seem to cater to children/young adults like other nearby resorts. We see mainly newly weds and older adults (like us). There does not appear to be a fitness room. An Expedia sales representative is on site every day to assist you with your touring/activity needs. A beautiful walkway sits behind the Mahana that meanders behind the various hotels along the beach. It is about a mile long ending just before the Sheraton Hotel. The hotel does not have a restaurant but the fabulous outdoor "Dukes" restaurant is but a short walk from the Mahana. My wife and I are avid snorkelers and we have tried various beaches on the big island of Hawaii and Maui. You will not be disappointed with the quality of snorkeling within a short walk from your room. A food market with adjoining stores ie., Subway, gifts etc. is a short walk or drive. Yes, we can't wait to return to the Mahana.

Room Tip: Choose a room situated on the second through seventh floor. Bottom floor has shrubbery blocking you...

My husband and I stayed in room 206 a premium 1 bedroom from May 16 thru May 21. Upon check in we were given a room on the 9th floor. When we entered the room we felt the premium room needed a little attention and when we looked out the window we felt dizzy and disconnected from the ocean. The front desk gave us room 206 right away and we were pleased. The room looked newly remodeled and the ocean was right at our finger tips. The only thing that needed attention was it needed a new comforter with fluffy pillows and decorator pillows. Maybe a new couch with again new deco pillows. We also encountered very tiny bugs on the bathroom counter. I discussed it with the front desk only to be told it was the weekend and maintenance was not available to address the problem until Monday when we were leaving. I found that to be unacceptable. Any problems should be repaired immediately.
I realize it is a tropical island and we dealt with it. The shrubs along the ocean could be trimmed to look nicer.
Duke's restaurant next door was wonderful for both breakfast and dinner. Gorgeous views. We also went to the Aston Kaanapali Shores for breakfast and it too was great. Took the expeditions ferry over to Lanai to golf Challenge of Manele. WOW that was a great experience and also golfed Kapalua Bay course. Unfortunately, the Plantation course had just been aeriated and wasn't in good condition yet.
All in all our stay was very nice for the second year in a row (last year we stayed in Wailea).
If we return we would not hesitate staying at the Aston Mahana and would still ask for the same room too. All of the other hotels on Kaanapali are twice the money and are not nearly as close to the ocean than the Mahana. Spring for a premium room though and don't listen to most of the other reviews that say to get a higher floor. Everyones opinion is different and we did not like the higher floor
