Wonderful spot in West Maui. Beautiful grounds with breathtaking views. Unique property with cove access to snorkeling and turtles galore. Short and fun walk to Napili Beach. I already miss falling asleep to the sound of the water. Slower pace complex that provides a taste of old school Hawaii.
Great family spot but respectful of vacationer's desire to relax and enjoy the natural sights and sounds of Maui. (don't expect a party scene or night life) if you are looking for a gorgeous quiet spot with tons of fun this is a great place. Su, the manager is wonderful and hosts a Wednesday night pupu party every week - be sure to join in. Our family has been vacationing at The Cove for over 30 years and it never disappoints! Counting the days until we can return.

Room Tip: Talk to Su for a condo that fits your needs. Condos are individually owned and vary on style. Check...

I'm going to try to describe what you get when you stay at the Cove. Bottom line is we loved it and would recommend it to anyone who is willing to spend a little more. One does have to remember the Cove is not free and it has $115 cleaning fee too... it does cost more than some surrounding options and Maui itself is expensive.... when you drive into Lahaina you see signs for starting at $100 a night and the Cove is way more than that so keep that in mind when you read the reviews. Aside from the cost though the Cove offers some great amenities which I will describe in my review.

One of the best things about the Cove is you are left alone, maid service is only offered on 10+ day stays which was fine for us, we did not have to worry about anyone being in our condo. In fact since the Pu Pu party on our week got cancelled (wet weather) we only saw Su on the first and last day of our stay...she is great and does a great job and the place is well maintained. It had the felling of a well run condo complex.. you get what you pay for which is a well run place to stay in a way that is like having your own place there for the time you have... its relaxing. Gate codes keep others out so its very private...the pool is small with a shower and the three grills are nice with the best view in the house.

The Cove is just south of Napali Beach which is literally next door a reef separates the Cove from the beach...so to get to the beach is following a path next to the Cove, through the next couple properties and walking over to the beach.... one of my kids said where is the sand? Well its 5 minutes away by foot. Napili beach is really good , as the guidebook says its the "most fun per square foot." I agree.... you have waves that the kids and adults can ride up the sand about 30-50 feet, you have a parallel reef to snorkel that runs along the whole beach, I walked up to the North end and spent over a half hour snorkeling the entire reef, some of the Turtle come over to Napili to visit from Hokokeana cove...one day they were surfing over the rocks and coming into the sandy shore in a few feet of water.

Here is a LIVE webcam of that beach...
http://www.napilisunset.com/overview/webcam

As for the Cove we snorkeled it several times, every time we saw the Turtles which are amazing some are six feet in diameter or more. They like to sleep in the caves in the middle of the cove and then surface in the morning and evening just look for the caves in the coral and you will find where they hang out. What is nice about the Cove is its very secluded unlike Napili beach which can get very crowded...so for me its a good mix of quiet/peacefulness with activity right next door. Please do not touch/disturb/abuse the turtles they are federally protected (Up to one year in prison and a $20,000 fine)

The Napili area (where the Cove is) is one of the more rainy areas along with road to Hana/Iao valley. We stayed in June and had rain several times. Usually its just for a few minutes then subsides the island directly across Molokai you can see it raining over there all of the time its neat to watch the squalls travel along that island as you sit on your lanai.... we saw a rainbow too which was beautiful. The cove is situated where the pine tress start its nice after the much drier drive up.

The nice thing is you are pretty far North and away from the hustle of Kaanapali (8 minutes )/Lahina(15 minutes)...I did not notice any "road noise" as others have previously described... yes you are close to the road but the road itself is much less traveled than the Highway.

Your view is a million dollar view everyday.... the cove/grounds in front and Molokai in the distance with nice foliage, the pool and BBQ's and the palm trees with the birds chirping. Its nice. Keep in mind Maui is humid and most of the units do not have air conditioning so things like butter melt if left out of the fridge. I'm used to San Diego which is more comfortable weather wise than humid and therefore hotter Maui...its not unbearable but you do want to open up the unit to allow the breeze to come through upstairs does get pretty warm in June.

So in all the Cove is a very nice place to base of your stay in Maui... about 45-50 minutes from the airport and 10-15 north from the main West Maui beaches (Kanapali / Lahaina). There are less known beaches within a few miles North... Napali, Slaugterhouse and if you want a lifeguard DT Fleming. After that the beaches get very rocky. Some of the best snorkling is at the Cove, next door in Napili beach, up the road north in Honolua bay (Bolders/chickens/roosters). All are some of the best snorkeling on the island when clear is nearby. Probably the best of all is Honolua bay if you want a fishbowl aquarium effect along the cliffs. People pay several hundred dollars each to take snorkeling trips there and its only several minutes up the road by car.

Other sites if you drive North are the Nakalele blowhole be sure to see at High Tide. http://www.hawaiitides.com/Kahului/GetTide.asp

And the Olvine Pools where the ocean rages just a few feet away... this whole area is like Ireland so green from the rain. You "can" drive al the way around north but I would not advise that (we did drive around the south end no problem in a Ford Focus...very long drive) there is 1.5 mile stretch that is very narrow and you need nerves of steel and watch your paint on your rental car. The Olvine pools were far enough North for me , I did not want to scrape paint just for a mile and a half stretch.

As for food.... we shopped Costco and the Swap meet (Sat 7a-12 ish pm go early it gets hot).... we BBQ'd three nights and ate breakfast in most mornings...we packed lunches for adventure days. Make sure to freeze water bottles and bring baggies of various sizes and a fold-able cooler... The water bottles keep things cold then melt for cold water.

The Swap meet is great (50 cents)! Best place for souvenirs as low as $1 and two of the best food items we had while there MauiGirlz shaved ice (better than ulanis and cheaper) and some Taco stand in the first row best cheap tacos on the island look for the guy giving samples... well worth a Saturday morning visit... we combined that and the Iao valley hike to make a day trip of it...probably one of the best day trips.

There are two laundry rooms $1.50 wash $2 dry. We did laundry once. There are several broken boogie boars and noodles and chairs to borrow in the south laundry.

Other nearby places to eat that are good for the price....

China Boat...get the sugar shrimp awesome! This is 5 minutes south in Kahana. Closest gas too is the Shell in Kahana.

Aloha Mixed Plate (ate twice).... in Lahaina next to Old Lahina Luau on Front... very reasonable prices for Maui and good food as well as an awesome view.

We also used the Snorkle Store for top notch snorkle gear for the week very clean and the guys do a great job about 10 minutes south in Kaanapali 2580 Kekaa Drive #114...get the free umbrella it came in handy to keep the sun off.

The side trips we did this trip:

Swap meet/Iao valley ...GREAT
Hana Drive and around the south end... NICE
Surfing school (Royal Hawaiian)/Lahina GREAT
Napali Beach day... GREAT
The Drive North (Dragons teeth, blowhole, Olvine pools, Honolua bay)...GREAT
Molikini on Trilogy...Snuba for the kids... GREAT
Haleakala at sunrise/Kula lodge breakfast...GREAT (1:45 am wake to see the Milky way)
Old Lahina Luau... Nice but expensive, good show ok food...sugary drinks.
Upcountry ... Sufing goat not so good, Lavendar farm GREAT, Makewoa good lunch at Polli's then we went to Ho'okepa to watch the winsurfers then the mall and airport.... Nice last day.

So I hope this review helps you to know the Cove. A special place to stay on Maui like home.
Everyone in may family loved it... I recommend Honokeana Cove highly for those looking for this type of stay.

Aloha tom,
What an awesome review and great source of info for anyone coming to the Cove or just to Maui.I am truly sorry for no Pupu party...our resident manager was on vacation...when it rains he has tents to construct....the tents probably would have washed away with the torrential rain we had at 5 pm on Wednesday. It only tells me that you must return to the Cove to experience a pupu party...with no rain!!! So please give me a call to book your next rip to Honokeana Cove.
mahalo,
Su

We stayed at Honokeana Cove for a week in mid June. The complex is an older 2 story complex with manicured grounds right on the ocean. The ocean access is via steps down to the water which is easy to get into. The cove is full of life right there. Saw sea turtles daily and lots of fish. The water clarity is variable but a ton of sea life 50 ft. from your condo. We spent an average of 2 hrs. a day in the cove in front of the condo. If you like to snorkel it is great!
Our 15 and 22 y.o. Daughters spent some time lounging at the pool. We used the grills and talked with the other guests in the evening. We found everyone to be friendly and cordial. The complex is nested pretty tightly so if you're being loud everybody would hear you ( per some other reviews) but we really didn't see anybody causing a problem while we were there. I didn't,t see any problems with kids and management at all. But if your kids are doing cannon balls into the pool, trying to stomp geckos and slap sun-bathing turtles, well yeah I think you'd hear about it per the residents (and maybe me). I didn't find any "unreasonable list of rules" and was glad to see reasonable behavior from the guests there. I liked the complex much more than a sky scraper mentality, and enjoyed the atmosphere. If your family has reasonable behavior I would think that you would love this place, we did.
North west Maui area is a great place to stay in June, great snorkeling and close to some small beaches for amateur level Boogie Boarding. There are nearby snorkel shops and a local market that is very close.
Overall a great place to stay.

We have been guests at this resort for over 15 times, so obviously we love it. All the units we have stayed in have been tastefully decorated and well equipped. They are located right on the shore of a beautiful rocky cove filled with many green sea turtles and amazing tropical fish. For us, it is the best snorkeling on Maui. The grounds are beautiful and the staff, led by Su and Greg, is most welcoming and helpful. The resort is located near sandy beaches, excellent restaurants, and good shopping. We have already made a reservation for our return next year!!!

Room Tip: Ask Su to help you choose what works for your family's needs and desires. We love the second flo...

My husband and myself share a condominium with my sister and brother-in-law. We enjoy the beauty and calmness of this site. The view from our condo (120) can't be beat anywhere on the island. You only have t short walk to the pool or to snorkel. There are turtles swimming around the cove all of the time. There is nowhere to go for a better meal than to bar b q your own and eat outside your room overlooking the cove. Shopping and sightseeing are close at hand.

Room Tip: Room 120 has the best view of all, other great ones are 218 and 219

If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the Hawaii lifestyle, this is it. You can enjoy the fantastic view every morning while enjoying your coffee. You can also enjoy some of the best snorkeling in Maui. The sea life is abundant. Some places boast of having sea turtles. You might see one or two. Here you can snorkel with more than you can count. There are also eels and fish galore.

The property is very well maintained and the service from the staff is great. I can't wait for another chance to go there.

Room Tip: The upper floor condos are the best. It gives you a good view of the cove.

It was wonderful to be back at Honokeana Cove this year. We went to one other condo complex during repairs and it couldn't compete with Honokeana. It's like a home away from home for us. Su and Greg are very professional and friendly. We consider them friends.

We'll be back!!!!!!

Room Tip: All of the units are comparable. It depends on whether you have two or a family of 10 or more.
