“Comfy rooms, great beach, but...”
Reviewed 26 July 2014 via mobile

My partner and I stayed here for a week in July 2014.
The resort is well laid out, it faces Maui's most beautiful beach with great snorkelling (heaps of fish & turtles a short walk along the beach). The pools seem nice, although we preferred to swim in the ocean. We had a basic studio room but it was great and the bed fantastically comfy.
We ate at the resort restaurant three times. Each time the waiters were average, often not uttering a word to us or ignoring us. The food was average also, but to be expected I guess. The bar staff were all very friendly and make a good piña colada.
My only real complaint about the Royal Laihana is the lack of information provided to us upon arrival. We were given a small photocopy of a map and were not told about any of the facilities or the area by checkin staff. There was no hotel book provided in-room by the resort. We had no idea for most of our stay that there's free trolleys in the area, that the resort has a third pool & spa pool, we hand washed our own laundry and dried it in our room as we didn't know how to get it done. We didn't know where the good snorkel spots were, nor that there was a coffee/ice cream shop on site. We didn't know that there is a shopping complex and restaurants a short walk/drive from the resort (Whalers Village).
I queued a few times at reception to ask various questions and asked why no information is provided in-room. Staff explained it's to encourage customer interaction...! We ended up gaining local knowledge from the very helpful guy in the local snorkel hire shop. Overall a slightly frustrating but good stay.

Aloha Frances. Thank you for the feedback on your recent stay. Glad to read that overall you had a good stay and enjoyed the resort and our beachfront location. I will be sharing your review with our Food and Beverage staff and will also revisit the feedback you provided regarding the lack of printed information with our team. We do have a full-service Guest Relations Office located adjacent to our Front Desk staffed by professional concierge that can assist guests with any information they might need regarding the resort or Maui. Mahalo.

Our stay here was wonderful. The beachfront cottage was only steps away from the pools and the ocean. We had a patio outside of our room to enjoy the ocean sounds and sights on also. Our room was 8103 in Cabin A and I would recommend that room to anyone. We ate at the restaurant several times and the food was always great. In fact they have the best calamari we had on the island. The breakfast buffet is good but a little over priced in my opinion, however everything is high on the island. We used the expedia travel planner for our excursions and they went off with out any troubles. We also took in the luau on the resort and it was great. The food, entertainment, seating, all of it was spot on. The only down side was the time crunch on the hospitality room that we used before we left that day. We had to check out of our room by noon, but wasn't leaving for the airport until 6. They have a room that you can use to shower, but only give 30 minutes for 3 of us. The people ahead of us went over so they were rushing us to get out. Otherwise it was all great. We even saw dolphins from the beach one afternoon. This place is great for families, honeymooners, couples, who ever. We walked down the beach walk to some of the other neighboring resorts and they all looked like hotels on the beach. This place had a better vacation feel to it. Perfect fit for us. The beach isn't crowded with people like the other resorts are either. This really felt like a get away spot. No time share people harassing you either.

Room Tip: We had a tablet with 4G and had no problems with using them. WiFi is in the lobby though. Cabin A 8...

Awesome location, great beach but very expensive drinks and food. Got to resort hotel at 2:30 a.m. AB time -extremely tired and checked in only to find that the pre-requested crib was not in the room and room only had one bed instead of requested 2...an hour later we got to finally settle in to proper room. : (

Aloha Jacquie. Thank you for the review. Happy to read that you were pleased with our location and the beautiful stretch of Kaanapali Beach that we front. In terms of pricing, when compared to other resorts along Kaanapali Beach most guests find the pricing at our restaurant and bars to be moderately priced. Sorry about the delay with the crib, glad to find that our staff was able to assist in changing your room to meet your bedding request. Mahalo.

We have really been enjoying our stay here! Accommodations are everything we hoped for and more. We loved the cottage having space and a kitchen. Allowed us to do our own thing as well as prepare some freshly speared fish :)

This hotel is in its own category. It is sandwiched between resorts and timeshares. We have been coming here for 20 years. We love it because of its location and it feels like what Maui used to be. Unlike all the other resorts nearby, you are not part of a sea of people. You can grab a towel and a chair and read a book without being bothered by the 1,000 conversations around. The tower has been redone and has a great view, which is like every other resort. However, the bungalows are timeless. The also have been redone. The digs are not fancy like all the others resorts, however you can certainly feel like you are on a vacation. Most of the employees have stayed on, unlike all the other resorts where people and employees move on through. If you need fancy, sneak to any of the nearby resorts, but come be on vacation at the hotel.

Have stayed at RL several times. It's not as opulent or modern as many of the neighboring resorts, but it represents a great value in the 'pricy' Kaanapali beach area. RL has an 'old world' charm, the staff is very helpful and friendly, the grounds are well maintained and the white sand beach is fantastic and not too crowded. You are close to Black Rock (to the south) and a reef lies just to the north. Great snorkeling at both spots. The guest rooms in the tower have been updated and refurbished and are very nice. Many of the cottages have not been updated, and are dated and in poor condition. It's a work in progress, but you are definetly better off in the updated tower. The restaurant is good, but there are plenty of fine dining options close to RL. There is a free and convienent trolley to Whalers Village with connection to Lahaina. Overall a really nice resort with a staff that makes you feel at home, reminescent of a classy, traditional old world Hawaiian resort that celebrates the culture and traditions of the islands - not the 'Disneyesque' resorts of
today.

It's only our first day on the property, but we are in love with this place. Just perfect, friendly staff, amazing service and exquisite facility. Complimentary trolley service, and very affordable shuttle service to nearby towns. Everything you need is on site.
One "constructive comment" regarding the room, the mirror set up in the bathroom facility is a bit awkward.
The staff here has been more than accommodating and strives to meet all your needs. The breakfast buffet is unbelievable with delicious hot selections, as well as several varieties of fruit and juices. We are more than pleased with the Royal Lahaina!

Aloha. Thank you very much for the positive review. I see that you are at the hotel currently so I will contact you directly regarding the mirror. There is a little design trick and easy fix, that it sounds as if you may not have discovered yet. The mirrors are actually on a hinge, rather than mounted to the wall, so they swing open when in use. Also, our Housekeeping Dept. has a supply of lighted make-up mirrors available for guests who desire them. Mahalo.
