“A delightful place”
Reviewed 6 August 2009

We drove up to Mkawao to eat at the Casa del Sol, only to find out that they had been replaced early this year by the Market Fresh Bistro. Some of the revies of this site are on the Casa del Sol and they should be ignored. The Bistro id dvoted to using local ingredients. The menu is inventive. The results are delecious. The staff is super friendly and proud of what they are trying to do. The prices ($10 to $16) are moderate for Maui. You can eat on the courtyard under a huge tree. There is a fine Art Gallery and a world class glassworks next door. It's a delightful place.

“Fresh, tasty, and creative”
Reviewed 1 June 2009

Tucked away in the small town of Makawao on Maui you will find a gem of a restaurant. Chef/Owner Justin Pardo brings his classical training to the tropics--and makes the most of farm to table produce and locally prodced beef, lamb, and fish. The dinner menu varies according to availability, and represents great value. Sauces and soups are all home made, and you can tell the difference. Prices are extremely reasonable for such high quality food. You can feel the passion the entire staff puts into their food. Do yourself a favor and drive up for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

“Produce from owners' gardens, super friendly service”
Reviewed 24 April 2009

I stumbled on this cafe while riding my bicycle up Baldwin Avenue. It is behind Makawao Steakhouse in a very atmospheric courtyard, surrounded by eclectic art galleries and shops. When I went in the staff and chef all came up and talked to me, and were so friendly, extremely welcoming and sincere. You rarely get this kind of treatment anymore, a real mom and pop establishment.

The second time I went up there (I look forward to rewarding my bicycling efforts with a stop at this cafe) the owner came outside to talk to me. He had such passion for growing his own produce & herbs, seeing the chef (his brother in law) whipping up beautiful and delicious meals with it. The customers rave about the organic and tasty dishes.

I inquired whether they would offer tours of their gardens, and he said that is in the works. He also has a wine background and I'm looking forward to their wine tastings. The prices are affordable, they strive to use all local ingredients, even the coffee. Truly the best gem on Maui, a must see. Open daily for breakfast and lunch. Dinners Thurs-Sun.

“New name: Market Fresh Bistro. Best food on Maui!”
Reviewed 21 April 2009

Anyone who can find their way to this little bistro are surely in for a treat. The name, management, and ownership have all changed, and these are all changes for the better.
I used to like the old place, but the new place is a culinary delight.
There are many chefs/restaurants who want to claim "local ingredients", but this place lives it. Menus change often due to what farmers are harvesting nearby, they even ask if "you're a farmer, let us know what you grow..." on the menus. The freshness is truly evident, many times you'll see deliveries come in.
Having been there many times now in the short time they've been open, I can honestly say that it's the best food on Maui. If you care about organic, or eating locavore this is the place for you. If you don't care much about those things but still want to eat well, this place is becoming known for what Chef Justin does best: cook with love for the food.
Make your way here, you are in for a real treat.

“Favorite "girls day out" place for lunch while shopping in Makawao”
Reviewed 22 April 2008

Cafe del Sol is very casual. They have very good sandwiches, my favorite being the Roast Chicken Salad sandwich. Eating outside can be a challenge with the birds, bugs, and falling leaves, so we eat inside, where the screened open windows still provide a light breeze. The servers are pleasant and friendly, and the prices are reasonable.
