We had a great stay in the Coconut Apartment! It was perfect for my family, low key and centrally located for all of our plans on the island. We had a great time and would definitely stay there again!

My husband and I spent a blissful anniversary week at the Gingerbread House in Paia, HI. We are two active, nature loving, bicycle riding vegans and first time Maui explorers. We were more than satisfied with the privacy and comfort that the house provided. Poni, the house caretaker, was responsive to our needs and very pleasant. The house is tucked back away from busy Hana Highway and is surrounded by beautiful mango and coconut trees. The kitchen was well stocked with all the cookware needed to stay in and cook meals if we so desired. We enjoyed shopping at Mana Foods, a local food store which carries everything essential for vegan/vegetarian cooking. When we wanted to dine out we took a quick ride into Paia Town to Fresh Mint for delicious vegan Vietnamese food or Flatbread for vegan pizza. We traveled around most of Maui and ended up deciding that the best beaches were all nearby, Baldwin Beach for swimming and beachcombing as well as Ho' okipa for surfing, snorkeling and watching Green Sea Turtles (yes, at dusk these amazing creatures climb out of the ocean to rest on the beach!). In conclusion, we are in love with Maui, Paia Town and Gingerbread House! We hope we can return for more adventures sometime soon!

Stayed overnight at the Yoga Studio room booked through Spyglass. Very unique and cool room! Poni was very friendly. We found the room to be clean and the view out the huge round window was fun. Quirky stuff included the private bath that was outside and didn't have glass in the windows (had a bamboo shade) and the concrete sink out the back door for washing dishes. We liked it! Know, though, that there are bugs in the bathroom (two huge cane spiders, etc) because this is next to a cane field and there is no glass. That doesn't bother us, the spiders don't chase you and they are kind of interesting. There are also geckos, etc. Again, doesn't bother us - just something to be aware of. The two things we would have suggested, though, were having soap on hand for guests and having air conditioning. We were hot when we shut the doors and tried to sleep - even with the ceiling fan on. If you have a spirit of adventure and you like quirky, this is a great place to consider.

We stayed at the Skyline apartment in Paia last week for a few nights and I am shocked to read the negative review below. We were more than happy with everything from start to finish.

First we were greeted by Liam, Poni’s business partner who was friendly, welcoming and could tell us everything we needed to know and more about the area and facilities at the apartment so there was no folder of information required.

We found the place to be spotless and if there had been any kind of dirt on top of the air con units we certainly wouldn’t have been able to see it as there is no way you could see all the way up there without a ladder and besides, staying in a beautiful little town like Paia we had far better things to do with our time! The town and beaches are just a few minutes walk away and it is a lovely relaxing place to spend a few days and watch the world go by. Plus it's the perfect place to stay if you want to do the Road to Hana which is definitely not to be missed.

The apartment itself is large and airy and finished to a very high standard. Its quirky design adds to its charm and there was always a wonderful breeze going through the place when the doors at either end were open so there was definitely no need for air con. There are stunning views from both the front and back porches.

We met Poni at the end of our stay and she was as friendly and welcoming as Liam had been at the start. Everything was perfect down to every little detail and we shall definitely be staying at the Skyline apartment again if we are lucky enough to be able to visit Maui and Paia again.

We would give this place 10/10 and recommend it to anyone and everyone! Thank you Poni and Liam for a wonderful stay!

This apartment has great potential! It has a really cool design, great views, and a great feel of openness. The breeze comes in one and and out the other, two decks, awesome.

We have some constructive criticism on the unit from a guest perspective:

The first is to do with the cleanliness. The unit did not seem clean. The walls were grubby, the ice maker in the freezer was mouldy, and the tops of the AC units were built up with a thick layer of brown grime. The shower was noted to have been cleaned upon check-in, but there was still a layer of soap scum that I was able to wipe off.

The second comment is to do with the amenities. The apartment has some great features but we were not able to take advantage. We could not find a remote or switch to turn on the AC units. The ice maker was so mouldy we couldn't use it. The dishwasher was unplugged and the owner provided no detergent. These would have been huge positives if they had been useable. There was no binder with information on the apartment or the area as there was in all of our other vacation rentals.

If the cleanliness and the amenities were improved, I would definitely give this place 5 stars. I think it has a lot of potential but needs a bit of attention first.

SpyglassHouse, Owner at Spyglass Maui Rentals, responded to this reviewResponded 8 June 2012

I read this review, it was just about a week ago. There are new guests in the apartment that are leaving today, and last night I was with them talking about this review. They told me that was just crazy, that they were more than happy there that they were going to write a great review when they get home.
1-As for the shower, the soap build up is on the bottom of the window, and it is lime build up from the hard water. It has been scrubbed with strong bleach many many times, (because I don't like it either) but it has not completely come off, the shower is so beautiful, there is no way we would ever leave it dirty for a guest.
2-As for the ice maker, someone had put a beer in there and it had exploded. I guess looked like mold but was not. The cleaner did not look in the ice maker when she was cleaning, honest mistake, for now on it is something she will do.
3-The suger cane field across the street from Hookipa was harvested last week, and from the plowing and the wind, the dust had settled on top of the air conditioning units. They had not been wiped, they are literally 10 to 12 feet high, and for them to have looked up there, they would have really have had to do some neck stretching. High places like that do not get wiped each time, as they need a ladder, but I guess they should have been and they are now of course.
4-The walls on the other hand are not grubby, they are smooth yellow imperial plaster and I found them to be quite nice when I looked at them after the review. Perhaps there was a cob web some where that I did not see.
5-We have never used the air conditioning. None of our other units have this feature as there are always nice strong trade winds blowing, and we do not advertise air conditioning in the skyline.
It is up to you weather this one bad review is going to scare you off. These people were pretty uptight, and the people who are in there now, are super happy. I would hate for you to miss out on this amazing apartment just from that one review. I hope you decide to stay in the Skyline Apartment I am confident that it is worth every penny. Poni Brendan, Co-Owner.

This is our second time staying at the Bicycle Inn and we thought it was great. This time we rented out all 3 rooms and essentially had a 3BR, 2BA condo to ourselves. It was clean and Poni is wonderfully easy to work with. Large deck for drying out our kiting gear and you just can't beat the proximity to Paia and KiteBeach. For the price, highly recommended, and we'll be back when next we are in Maui!

The Spyglass Maui Rentals are two, well cared for homes, right next door to each other, in the middle of all of the North Shore beaches and less than a mile from Paia town, in a local, residential neighborhood. The closest beach access is a 5 minute walk away. The houses are owned by a two good friends and long time Maui residents, Liam McCormick and Poni Brendan, who call themselves family. Our on-sight manager, Sabrina, and full time housekeeper, Patti are here to assist you. It has a jetted tub in the first floor bathroom. The Green Turtle House can be rented as a ONE or TWO bedroom house and can accommodate up to 6 guests when rented as a TWO bedroom. In our older reviews and on Google there is mention of the Bicycle Inn/House and the beachfront "Spyglass House". These are no longer our properties. The Gingerbread House and Green Turtle House have been under new management since the fall of 2014. The most current reviews of our properties can be found on Airbnb and VRBO.
