If you enjoy horseback riding and spectacular ocean vistas, than the Mendes Ranch ride is for you. Both experienced and beginner riders will savor the hour and forty-five minute ride along the Waihe'e Valley and the ocean cliffs below. The Mendes staff are very professional, helpful, and friendly cowboys & cowgirls. They will match you up with the appropriate horse based on your riding ability. For most of the ride we walked our horses down and then up the shoreline cliffs; however, we were afforded the opportunity to run the horses along two short parts of the trail. My teenage daughters relished the opportunity to move at a gallop. The ranch hands who guide the ride will make a number of stops for photos along the bottom portion of the trail. They will even take pictures of you on your horse with the scenic ocean backdrop. Don't forget to bring your camera. Our pictures appeared to come right out of a postcard collection. Upon completion of the ride, complimentary refreshments were provided. We did not stay for the BBQ lunch, which is available at an additional price.
If you are adventurous and your buttocks is not to sore from the ride, the Waihe'e Ridge Trailhead is only a half mile away on the opposite side of the road. It is a five mile (round trip) hike with breathtaking valley views to include a distant waterfall (Makamaka'ole Falls). Just be prepared to make the initial 1,500 feet climb to the valley's crest.
