We stayed at the Hotel Molokai for 5 nights in July, and had a wonderful time! If you want to experience the true flavor of Hawaii void of chain restaurants and stores and hokey souvenir shops, then this is the place to come! Most of the people we met here were born and raised in Molokai or on one of the other Hawaiian islands, and they had so much pride in sharing the history of the island with us and directing us to places to visit during our stay. A few sentences could not possibly give this Hotel the props it deserves, so let's break it down...
Rooms: We had a room on the 1st and 2nd floor, both of which were very clean with big comfortable beds. I had back surgery right before we left for this vacation and the king bed had just the right amount of softness to keep me comfortable throughout the stay. There's no air conditioning in the units, which concerned me at first, but there is such a nice breeze coming through the room at night and the units have wall mounted fans, and ceiling fans in the upper units which helped to keep the room cool. The downstairs unit was a little warmer and could probably be a little more comfortable with a ceiling fan as well.
Location: The Hotel is located right on the water. There's no beach area, and you can't swim in the water there, but you also can't beat waking up to that beautiful view every morning! The hotel is located close to the small town center and some of the local restaurants. The nearest swimmable beach is about a 20 minute drive either north or south of the hotel. This may seem like an inconvenience to some, but driving there gives you an opportunity to see some of the beautiful views the island has to offer.
Food: The kitchen at the hotel is under renovation, but 3 nights out of the week they make food in the grill area next to the outdoor restaurant and pool. While I never saw a cow on Molokai, I experienced one of the best burgers I've ever eaten! We had several different dishes at the hotel during our stay and all of them were delicious!
Amenities: The outdoor bar area was a fun and friendly place where the hotel guests and locals gathered every evening for happy hour and to exchange some island history! The swimming pool offered cool refreshment after a long, hot day at the beach. The hotel loans out beach chairs, small coolers, umbrellas and towels during your stay so that you have everything you need for the beach. They also have a small selection of DVDs that you can borrow when you're ready to settle in for the night! We woke every morning and went down to the outdoor lobby where there was a variety of breakfast foods set up to help you start your day. There are hammocks located in several areas around the property where we found ourselves napping on several occasions as we swayed in the beautiful breeze! The hotel also has free WiFi, but it's not always easy to access because of the island location, so the hotel offers free phone calls not only on the island, but also to the mainland.
Activities: Molokai does not have much of a night life, but the Hotel Molokai seems to be the place to go, especially on Friday nights when the elders come with their ukulele's to sing Hawaiian songs, and some of the local women tell stories through their beautiful traditional Hawaiian hula dances. There are also bands that come to play at the hotel every other Friday night. Unfortunately, we missed them while we were there.
Staff: I've definitely saved the best for last! I cannot say enough good things about the staff at Hotel Molokai. Everyone we encountered greeted us with a big bright smile and couldn't do enough for us to make our stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible! A special thanks to Michael, the General Manager, who made us feel like part of the hotel family from the minute we arrived on property. One morning, my mom commented about how she would love to have some fresh fruit for breakfast, and the next thing we knew, one of the staff arrived at our door with some homegrown papaya right from Michael's own back yard!
If you're going to visit the Hawaiian islands, Molokai is a "must see"! Stay for a few days and enjoy the laid back traditional culture of Hawaii. The Hotel Molokai is the perfect starting point!
