“The True Flavor of Hawaii”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

We stayed at the Hotel Molokai for 5 nights in July, and had a wonderful time! If you want to experience the true flavor of Hawaii void of chain restaurants and stores and hokey souvenir shops, then this is the place to come! Most of the people we met here were born and raised in Molokai or on one of the other Hawaiian islands, and they had so much pride in sharing the history of the island with us and directing us to places to visit during our stay. A few sentences could not possibly give this Hotel the props it deserves, so let's break it down...

Rooms: We had a room on the 1st and 2nd floor, both of which were very clean with big comfortable beds. I had back surgery right before we left for this vacation and the king bed had just the right amount of softness to keep me comfortable throughout the stay. There's no air conditioning in the units, which concerned me at first, but there is such a nice breeze coming through the room at night and the units have wall mounted fans, and ceiling fans in the upper units which helped to keep the room cool. The downstairs unit was a little warmer and could probably be a little more comfortable with a ceiling fan as well.

Location: The Hotel is located right on the water. There's no beach area, and you can't swim in the water there, but you also can't beat waking up to that beautiful view every morning! The hotel is located close to the small town center and some of the local restaurants. The nearest swimmable beach is about a 20 minute drive either north or south of the hotel. This may seem like an inconvenience to some, but driving there gives you an opportunity to see some of the beautiful views the island has to offer.

Food: The kitchen at the hotel is under renovation, but 3 nights out of the week they make food in the grill area next to the outdoor restaurant and pool. While I never saw a cow on Molokai, I experienced one of the best burgers I've ever eaten! We had several different dishes at the hotel during our stay and all of them were delicious!

Amenities: The outdoor bar area was a fun and friendly place where the hotel guests and locals gathered every evening for happy hour and to exchange some island history! The swimming pool offered cool refreshment after a long, hot day at the beach. The hotel loans out beach chairs, small coolers, umbrellas and towels during your stay so that you have everything you need for the beach. They also have a small selection of DVDs that you can borrow when you're ready to settle in for the night! We woke every morning and went down to the outdoor lobby where there was a variety of breakfast foods set up to help you start your day. There are hammocks located in several areas around the property where we found ourselves napping on several occasions as we swayed in the beautiful breeze! The hotel also has free WiFi, but it's not always easy to access because of the island location, so the hotel offers free phone calls not only on the island, but also to the mainland.

Activities: Molokai does not have much of a night life, but the Hotel Molokai seems to be the place to go, especially on Friday nights when the elders come with their ukulele's to sing Hawaiian songs, and some of the local women tell stories through their beautiful traditional Hawaiian hula dances. There are also bands that come to play at the hotel every other Friday night. Unfortunately, we missed them while we were there.

Staff: I've definitely saved the best for last! I cannot say enough good things about the staff at Hotel Molokai. Everyone we encountered greeted us with a big bright smile and couldn't do enough for us to make our stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible! A special thanks to Michael, the General Manager, who made us feel like part of the hotel family from the minute we arrived on property. One morning, my mom commented about how she would love to have some fresh fruit for breakfast, and the next thing we knew, one of the staff arrived at our door with some homegrown papaya right from Michael's own back yard!

If you're going to visit the Hawaiian islands, Molokai is a "must see"! Stay for a few days and enjoy the laid back traditional culture of Hawaii. The Hotel Molokai is the perfect starting point!

Room Tip: Upper floors seem a bit cooler than lower floors because of the additional ceiling fan. Rooms close...

The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. They are establishing a restaurant and will offer food service again soon if they haven't begun already. Local music is a bonus and one night a week there is a ukulele jam/song fest with the elders.

Not a bad place to sleep while working on island. The bar was pleasant and had a two person live band, so appreciated. I live on Oahu, so getting somewhere relatively quiet with amenties is theratpeutic.
Watch out that the little caraf in the coffee makers does not jump out of your hand when you are up at 6:00 am stumbling around trying to make coffee. They break on the floor and it is embarrassing confessing to the desk clerk your ineptitude. Jet lag???
Some water views. No air conditioning so pray for tradewind days.
Free book and DVD lending honor system at the front desk if you have the time.
I Definitely would like to come back and stay three or four days as a base to explore.
The only other place I have stayed on Molokai was in Wailau Valley in a tent, trail clearing. It is a boat trip and hike in from north or a hike over the Pali and through nearly unmarked, ie super overgrown trails to the Wailau Stream from the heiau on the South side of the island. So Hotel Molokai was much more comfortable. But wilderness camping has its charms. Also no air conditioning. No lending library. No lights.
Have a great time...expect to find your own entertainment. I think Kaunakakai has a the one traffic light. There is a statue of a chicken in a hula skirt there also above a drum barbecue place. So much to see.

Room Tip: There is very little to do entertainment wise on Molokai. It is a small place and has charm but it...

The property is a run like a hotel, but it is actually free standing bungalows that look like small residences. It was clean, comfortable, and inviting. The manager, Pua, was extremely helpful both during the booking process and throughout my stay. The location of the property on the island makes it easy to go in any direction and not have to drive far to see everything. This is not a "luxury" hotel, however the staff goes out of their way to make their guests feel like VIP's. Would definitely stay here again!

Stayed in Molokai for 3 days over the 4th of July weekend.

The hotel staff was very pleasant. They let us borrow a cooler for our day at the beach at the front desk and gave us ideas on which beach to go to. The hotel atmosphere is very relaxed and the bar setup nice, right by the ocean and the swimming pool, with hammocks available.

What makes my review average is the fact that the ground floor standard room is really small and basic.

Barely enough room for a chair, no A/C, no closet or really anywhere for your clothes and no proper shower head. The fan helped, the bed was fairly comfortable and we spent most of our time outside so all and all, it was not bad for a long weekend, but it might be a little uncomfortable if you're thinking about staying for a week.

Room Tip: Probably want to get a better room than the standard room

It's been literally 2 decades since i've been back to Hotel Molokai. Actually I used to work there in my early twenties in the restaurant ( that's currently being rebuilt due to an unforeseen fire).
This was such a perfect trip and excellent stay.

Check in:
A Breeze..... Quick and seamless. I asked after being given a room by the parking lot to move to a quieter spot as i know how noisy it can get and bam no problem.

Room: Super cute!!!!!
Booked a Garden bottom floor room and it came with a very comfortable King Sized bed. The bathroom has its old charms with a bit of a make over. Their product selection is excellent and their shampoos conditioners and soaps are heavenly. Flat screen tv facing bed made it lovely to lay around and watch tv as you rest from your exciting day adventure. The patio is so quaint and perfect shaded by beautiful Plumeria Trees.

Property: Stunning as usual! quaint little cottages dotting the property that lead to the pool with a breath taking view of the Island of Lanai. the Restaurant is closed , but on certain days they do set up a pupu station to feed you while you indulge in their lovely bar's cocktails and listening to Live Hawaiian Music. One late afternoon there were a bunch of Kupunas ( elders) all sitting together, each with a ukulele strumming and singing in unison. So lovely!

I will definitely consider staying at this hotel again when I come back to Moloka'i to enjoy its grander beauty.
