“Nice place to stay on Molokai”
Reviewed 23 September 2012

Conveniently located, quiet, clean, affordable and comfortable B & B with a lovely patio garden. the proprietor Cheryl is a great source of information about things to do on Molokai and island politics-better than any guidebook, and goes above and beyond to make sure her guests are taken care of.

We stayed for over 2 weeks and had a wonderful experience in Molokai because of Cheryl.
Cheryl goes above and beyond to make her guests feel at home and comfortable.
Cheryl, knows everyone on Molokai everything about the island.
The B& B is immaculate.
The breakfasts were unique and excellent and dietary problems were handled.
I can't say enough about the time we spent at Ka Hale Mala.

Molokai is not for everyone, and neither is this B&B, but if you want to try something out of the ordinary, far from the glitz of Waikiki, this is a genuine experience. Ka Hale Mala is spacious, convenient, comfortable, and a fine value in a lovely place. What makes it special, however, is the innkeeper, Cheryl, who picked us up at some ungodly hour in the morning when our flight got in, gave us an extremely detailed discussion about what to see, where we could eat, and what we could do throughout the island. Other reviewers mention that Cheryl might actively participate in the activity planning too aggressively. We disagree, having found her to be a fine conversationalist, and extremely knowledgeable. I'm a non-conformist who likes to discover things for myself, so I'm sensitive to being told what to do. Cheryl did not tell us what to do. Instead, she sized my family and me up with a few questions, and then *recommended* that we hike the trail past the parking area rather than drive (excellent suggestion), that we push on to the end of the road east even though it seemed to go on forever (another great suggestion), and that we get the fresh bread at her favorite bakery (which was delicious). If anything, I regret not absorbing all she had to say, despite the copious notes she wrote for us. In addition, my family and I got a real sense of what make the Molokai residents tick, including what ticks them off.

Regarding bugs and other critters...we kept the screens closed, and were not bothered by anything.

If you want a hotel with servants who are invisible, go somewhere else. If you want the experience of Molokai from the eyes of the people of Molokai, this is the place.

Your host Cheryl will take great care of you. She will usually meet her guests at the airport (and she even went back early the next morning to pick up my luggage that didn't make it with me the night before!) and she provides a thorough and interesting overview of the island. Her breakfast was tasty and healthy and the same time. I highly recommend this B and B on all accounts.

Four private very large, spacious and very clean rooms. A, Double bedroom, bathroom, well set-up Kitchen/dining with fridge stove, utensils, etc and a separate lounge containing two single beds if needed, High speed internet. A good library and Island maps and information round it out. .
All you need for a pleasant stay, but no food or coffee is supplied. Breakfast however is available and is good value-juice, coffee, fruit, toast and a cooked plate of some sort, (adjusted to consider any wishes or allergies). Cheryl likes to sit and chat during breakfast, which can be very useful. She gave us very good information on where to go and do.
Definitely recommended.

My husband and I just returned from our 9 night honeymoon stay at Ka Hale Mala Bed and Breakfast. We had breakfast two of the mornings and made our own the other seven mornings. We generally enjoyed our stay, and wanted to give our impressions.

First, the neutrals: There are two people who run the bed and breakfast: Cheryl, and Jack, her husband, who is quite infirm and besides the first day, we didn’t see him at all. There are two cats that live upstairs but we never saw them except at breakfast. The accommodations are functional and adequate, but definitely not modern or fancy.

Next, the positives: The unit is very spacious and private. The nice tropical plants all around the living quarters give a sense of tranquility. There is a full kitchen with dishes and silverware that made it nice to cook for ourselves so we didn’t have to eat out all the time. There is a television (not that we watched it much), high speed wireless internet that my computer connected to effortlessly, a nice selection of books to read, patio furniture and a clothes line for drying wet clothes. Cheryl, the hostess, did a light cleaning of the place every day and even washed and put away our dishes for us. The breakfasts were tasty and filling. She was helpful with planning where to go and how to get places on Molokai, and it is obvious that she considers herself an “expert”. That brings me to the main point of the negatives…

Now, the negatives: There really is only one main complaint we had about this place. We chose not to have breakfast every morning at first for personal / dietary reasons, but eventually did have breakfast with Cheryl twice. Now, I say “with Cheryl” because that’s exactly what we got both times. She made breakfast, told us about it, then sat down and drank her coffee and talked “at” us, not with us, the entire time we ate. She has a very strong personality and likes to give her opinion about all things Molokai related. She is a teacher and we both did often feel we were being lectured about Hawaii politics, etc. I found it hard to enjoy the breakfast and relax because we couldn’t get a word in edge-wise, even to ask for another napkin or more bread. We really felt like she was not putting our privacy and comforts first above all. (And we’re not high-maintenance or picky people.) We were a little worried that we saw her cats roaming the kitchen counters, but we never had cat hair in our food (that we knew of).
