Whatever your tropical getaway dream is, Hale Kainalu will make that dream a reality. We did not want to do the resort trip to Hawaii. We wanted a relaxing getaway in a beautiful place, and that is what we got. Molokai is authentic Hawaii. We saw whales, dolphins, sea turtles, waterfalls, exotic birds and beautiful beaches.
Geckos provide endless entertainment. But mostly, you’ll be on the deck watching the ocean and the sky. I hope you’re lucky enough to be there for the full moon. Breathtaking.
The house is lovely and comfortable with a wonderful kitchen and comfortable beds and the grounds are impeccable and gorgeous beyond words. The private beach is beautiful and secluded. What more do you need.......
Jessica makes the whole process so easy. Very accommodating and helpful. She was so lovely that I almost feel like we’re friends, although we’ve not met in person.
Even if it’s just once in your lifetime, don’t let it pass you by. Aloha.
This trip was a pure delight from start to finish!
We arrived late at night, and it was a bit tough to find the property because there are literally no lights on the island. Tired, a bit stressed and confused we tumbled into bed (which was very comfortable) and fell asleep. When we awoke, it was like waking up in a dream! The cottage was charming, but the property was pure heaven! Kayaks, a small private beach, a lush lawn with palm trees, and outdoor shower, OMG, we never wanted to leave!
Everything was very clean (I'm sensitive to smells, dirt, etc. and this property met and exceeded my expectations) and was just as described. The cottage truly feels larger than the pictures show. The grounds were very well maintained too, and the owners were very responsive. When we left we inadvertently forgot to carry the trash out, so we texted in a panic, and they responded right away.
It depends on what YOU want in a vacation, but we wanted to get away and to relax and reconnect and this property was perfect for that. We weren't close to town (but there was a gas station/store/eatery near by) and wasn't in a tourist area. It was close enough that we could drive to wherever we wanted to go, but when we got back we could completely relax and unwind and get away. Which is what we wanted.
One day we did the Halawa Valley Cultural hike, one day we went to town and then went to the beach to watch the sunset, one day we went to the old Leper Colony. All magical and wonderful experiences. We simply cannot wait to get back there again. I have already told my parents that they need to book here, and when we do go back, I won't stay anywhere else.
Here are the things that I wish I would have been aware of however. The island is small. We flew in late on a Sunday night and stores were closed. We swung by the one store that we found and got some food for breakfast, but we didn't get coffee because we assumed that the house would have coffee. While there was a coffee maker, there was NO coffee there. Yes, it clearly says in the description that there is no coffee, we get locked into "hotel mentality" and we simply forgot. The stores were far enough away that it was inconvenient to go grab a coffee that first morning. Just plan ahead and if you like coffee or tea, be sure to bring your own.
Same with shampoo and conditioner. Being used to hotels, we didn't bring our own, and didn't realize that there was no shampoo or conditioner until after we got back from the store getting coffee! Oops! Again, not a problem, it was listed in the description, we just didn't cognizance it, and we wish we would have known in advance.
Truly magical! We can't wait to go back!
This beachfront estate has everything you need for a private romantic get away or a family gathering. Spent a fabulous week there, close to amenities, a beautiful estate that offers a secluded beach with kayaks so you can tour around shore. Clean, well furnished with island decor. We will be returning to this little piece of paradise. Molokai definitely the island of choice for us, Recommend highly.
My husband and I stayed here for about 8 nights in mid July of 2016. For 5 days it was like living on Fantasy Island. Magical, peaceful, so very private. For some reason, there is not much info about hiking on Molokai except for hiking that you have to pay for - that's just nuts. We tried to find good hiking based on maps, guidebooks, the internet, etc. It was only by accident I noticed a hiking path on a satellite picture on my cell phone GPS. There is a fantastic hike which appears to go for miles and miles, the easy access is literally right across the street from this property - a few steps to the left as you are leaving the property driveway. We hiked for about 40 minutes up and then turned around and hiked back. Awesome views of the ocean and of almost the entire Island. (still baffles me that this trail is not a "known" trail; like its some sort of Island secret?) There was a really intense heat wave that hit all of the Islands for a few days during our stay towards the end of July; also, many of the locals leave town the last two weeks of July and certain shops are closed. I would absolutely recommend this vacation home for September through June. Because of the possibility of dehydration and other complications from severe heat, I can't recommend any place on any of the Islands without A/C for July and August.
We stayed for a week at Hale KaiNalu cottage, Molokai. It was a lovely location, with spectacular views to Maui across the water. The cottage was fully equipped, very clean. We walked along the beaches exploring, wading through shallow water sometimes, which was fun. We were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves and the gorgeous green geckos living on the front verandah. We had breakfast on the verandah every day, then sometimes lunch on one of the lounges under the coconut palms. Then cocktails at sunset. Perfect! The cottage comes with snorkelling gear and kayaks for non-windy days. There is an indoor hot tub and outdoor shower with a pretty orchid growing there.
We visited Hale KaiNalu in August, '16. We were a group of 4 adults (2 couples), and the house is an ideal size, with two master suites, and plenty of room to relax. We made excellent use of the well-equipped kitchen, cooking almost all of our meals there. Note that the property is a long way (about 20 miles) from the main town and any restaurants. We did find that Goodz 'n Grindz, about a mile away, had a great take-out window for breakfasts and lunches, as well as last-minute grocery items.
The property is nicely located away from the road, which appears to be a unique feature on the East End. This is nice as it adds to the feeling of seclusion, and eliminates any traffic noise. Falling asleep at night to the sounds of the breeze in the palm fronds and the gentle waves on the beach quickly becomes addictive! My husband mentioned missing that our first night elsewhere!!
The home is beautifully situated, with a lanai that looks out over the water to Maui. We had spectacular sunrises every day. Even the rainy days were a pleasure to just sit and enjoy. The small beach is lovely at low tide, when there's a little more room to walk and watch the busy crabs. There is also nice swimming right off the beach. We swam, snorkeled out to the reef, and used the provided ocean kayaks nearly every day.
The house is a great "home base" for seeing Molokai - we visited the Halawa Valley, which is quite close, and did the guided tour with Kalani Pruett. Highly recommended! It was also a relatively quick drive into town for provisions. We drove over to the west side to visit the beaches, which are lovely. This is a very different side of the island, being quite arid.
There is a lovely mango tree in the front yard which gave us fruit for breakfast nearly every day! The caretaker, Lauren, also sells eggs and pork, which we took good advantage of!
I highly recommend Hale KaiNalu. One of the nicest accommodations you will find on the island.

Our stay at Hale KaiNalu exceeded all expectations awakened by childhood dreams of tropical paradises described in Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island.
