“Waste of time”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

Went on a nature tour yesterday and this was one of the stops. It is literally right off a busy road. The tour driver just parked on the side of the road and told us all to get out. You walk down a short path and then take a right. There is a huge pile of black rocks. Our tour guide then pointed out a couple of plants that anyone could have identified. He then proceeded to tell us the history of this sacred place. When he began to talk about the sacrifices that had occurred here, a man that had been working nearby interrupted. He refuted everything that our tour guide said. After thirty minutes, no joke, of this man telling us his version it was time t go. I do not know who to believe about the history of this site. However, I am not that interested to find out. There has to be more interesting temples available for people to see.

“Nice walk”
Reviewed 19 April 2014 via mobile

Stumbled across this little gem sort of hidden away but a must do

Not really listed anywhere as a spot to go see, follow the directions on prior post and can't go wrong

“Short Easy Hike to 'Indiana Jones Temple of Doom'”
Reviewed 20 February 2014

We love Moloka'i, and everytime we go there, we try to find something new that we haven't done.

On the east, jungly side of the island, just before one reaches Mana'e Goodz n' Grindz(the convenience store) coming from Kaunakakai, on the left hand side, just before a short bridge, is the entrance.

It's a fenced dirt road with a little sign that says Heiau. Watch for it careful or you'll miss it. If you reach the store, you've gone too far- you can ask the lady in the store for directions, too.

Simply, go around the fence and take the short hike through a beautiful raniforest. When you reach a house on the right, turn immediately to the left. There's a sign there pointing out the temple- which you can somewhat make out through the trees.

The day we were there, with our adventuresome 7 & 10 year olds, the river bed was dry, and we met no mosquitoes- much to the joy of our eldest. It is possible that you may have to cross a wet stream. Avoid if it's flooding.

The Heiau is a tall and long pile of rocks, and you can follow the trail around to get a view above it or on it. By history, this was a school of sorcery and human sacrifice- of men only; moreover, it could be seen, in it's heyday, from the sea.

The brochure from Alamo car rental said to get permission for going her from Moloka'i Accupunture and Massage- which we did- but it wasn't necessary. They were very nice(looks like a very serene and nice facility in Kaunakakai- we'll try them out next time), and they just asked that we keep the noise down when we hike by the home out there.

Fun easy hike- kids loved it, and then we stopped at the store for refreshments, and off to 20 Mile Beach for snorkelling. For the Heiau, we parked on the side of the road just before the bridge.

“What a treat”
Reviewed 12 December 2013

Just a few hundreds yards off the main road near mile 16, but discretely signed and easily missed.

It is HUGE! Easily football field sized or bigger, and layered so much is unseen beneath the vegetation.

Nobody here- magical to have the place to ourselves and consider thelong, sometimes violent history of the place.

We saw two owls, apparently a strong omen, quite portentious according to our guide the next day at Halawa.

In retrospect, I think going with a local would have been better than peering at a travel guide as we walked around the site...
