We spent two nights there, we booked through hostelworld for 3 beds in the same dorm cabin, but they split us in 2 cabins instead.
There is no safe in the cabins but there is a safe at the reception that is available for your valuables.
Location is good, on the north shore very close to shark's cove and a few amazing beaches.
Cabins were DIRTY. There were cockroaches in the dishes and all over the beds at night. The windows were always open, there are holes in the walls and floor. There were geckos inside as well as outside on the walls.
No fan in the room, it gets very hot during the day but it's OK at night.
Not worth the price.

I was here to chillax after working a ski season in Whistler. The place is like your typical surf shack - don't come here expecting any frills, and don't expect it to be spotlessly clean! No surf shack in the world is spotlessly clean!! I wouldn't rate this place "Very Good", but at the same time I wouldn't rate it "Average" either - it was just good.

What you get is an absolutely amazing location and an unbeatable atmosphere. When I was there at the end of the surf (winter) season, the place was full of surfers that had been staying there for weeks. VERY easy-going, friendly people - the sort of people you become best friends with after a few days hanging out. The grocery store is just a stone's throw away, plus you have world-class surf beaches within a 5 min bike ride. You're in Hawaii - what more do you want???

When I was there, I fell in love with the girl working there - a very cute, softly spoken surfer girl from Central America. She was as helpful as possible, renting me a surfboard & bicycle. I didn't ask for anything else, so not quite sure of the extent of the service...

Room Tip: Pack earplugs - there's a chicken farm next door and the cocks are indiscriminant at what time they decide to stretch their vocal cords!!

This hostel is in the most beautiful spot, walking distance to some awesome swimming and snorkeling beaches, and nextdoor to Waimea, very close to gorgeous Pupukea. But this hostel is in desperate need of someone to clean it. We stayed in the Brown House and the rooms were less than simple. Its basically a bed and two lamps with a fan, and thats it.
It was fine for us as we were only there two nights but wouldn't want to stay there any longer. We were there for the location alone. They have signs up everywhere for people to do their dishes or you will not be able to check out (even if they're not your dishes etc etc). But there is not even any dish soap to use, all the dishes were covered in a film of grease, and the oven was less than desirable to use, so we just ate out. Would be an issue I'm sure if you were staying longer than a couple of days. But the selection of incredible food to be found anywhere at any one of the caravans will keep your stomach happy. Pupukea Grill is the absolute best, try the spicy tuna bowl and it will change your life!

You can rent snorkels, body boards, bikes etc from the backpackers for a refundable deposit which is really handy. Staff were really friendly and super laid back (hence the lack of cleaning I'm guessing)

The place could be really amazing, the main entertaining areas are great.but no one has bothered to clean in a while. It has that great surf-shack feel and if you want to be close to everything on the north shore then this is it. But don't expect too much for your dollar.

The location might be good, especially if you are a surfer, and the wifi worked well everywhere and was free, but that's all the positives! We stayed at the so called plantation village in a studio that was supposed to offer shared kitchen and bathroom. Our luck was that the other room was empty so we didn't have to share with anyone. The whole place was really awful, furnished in bits and pieces, dirty bamboo blinds, no lock on windows etc and for a price of US$83, I don't think it is especially cheap. We stayed in other "budget places" as cheaply as around $90, that were 100 times better. The worst was the so called kitchen, it had a coffee machine, an old microwave, one mug, one fork, one pair of tongs! We had to share the fork, and thank goodness for my swiss army knife!
We knew that by choosing a "backpacker" kind of accommodation, it would be basic, but basic shouldn't mean grotty. We shortenned our stay by one night and booked a hotel in Waikiki for $100, with pool, air con etc.

I stayed in the Beach house option(studio apartment across from plantation villa) with my sister, location absolutely AMAZING! 1 min walk to Waimea, 4 min bike ride to Pipe, 1 min walk to Pupukea starbucks. The only good thing about this accomodation was the location! The apartments were HORRIBLE, ants everywhere, balcony doors and windows had no locks, the whole unit felt extremely dirty and i am horrified to think abou how unhygenic the beds were. When we ventured across to the backpacker section to use the complimentary WIFI there were at least 15 men and no females. This accomdation would only suit guys and people on an extreme budget. We found this was the only accomodation avaliable near for stay but it is totally worth an extra $110 to go stay at turtle bay resort!!
