Cab's Alternative Green B&B is one of the few places on Oahu where a first time visitor can experience the island without feeling like a tourist-- he offers a trip without tour buses or crowds. I recommend that a first time visitor squeeze in a night or two with Cab, as well as stay in the usual Waikiki resort.

I lived for 5 years in Hawaii and returned for a visit this October. During my time on the North Shore, I was able to learn several insider tricks: hikes, uncrowded surf spots, farmer's markets, resources to find special events, etc. Cab knows them all. In addition, his cooking is amazing and he taught me all sorts of stuff about the island.

The other reviews are accurate--his place isn't as luxiorus as a South Shore resort--but it is comfortable and his advice is invaluable, it will help you see the island in ways you never would have expected.

First, the bad stuff. We arrived at the place, but the driveway isn't well marked so we weren't entirely sure which house was Cab's. Luckily, a neighbor pointed us in the right direction. The house is elevated, but to get to the stairs to go up we wandered through a maze of bikes and other mishmash. The living areas and bathroom could use a good scrubbing to get dirt of the corners.

And now, the good stuff. We can totally appreciate what Cab is trying to do. He's very into his gardening and wants to expose people to fresh, locally grown food. Breakfast was a treat both mornings we were there as we were able to try some interesting fruit. The rooms we stayed in were nice and clean (except for those pesky corners that needed scrubbing), and our beds were very comfortable. Cab was a very friendly host who helped us figure out what to do with our time on the North Shore. We stopped at Laniakea Beach to see the turtles and while there one came up onto the beach for some sun. The local farmers market on Sunday mornings was a treat. And we were even able to catch the weekly polo match on Sunday afternoon just a short drive from Haleiwa. It was nice to come home both nights we stayed to chat with Cab about our day. One of my friends said that she really enjoyed having a connection with the host of the place we were staying, and I realized how she was right that it was a rare thing.

Considering everything, I would recommend Cab's place to friends but with a word of warning. If he cleared up a few of the things I mentioned, this place would be top notch!

Super friendly Cab Spates, a former surf pro, has a couple of rooms in his house on offer. Don’t expect five star luxury – the rooms are basic and you have to share the bathroom with other guests – but do expect a truly unique experience. Each morning Cab prepares an exotic breakfast full of spices and fruits out of his garden. Do ask for his superb pancakes with passion fruit-look-a-likes. Cab is a great source for information on the benefits of Hawaiian plants and trees. The leaves of the Hibiscus in his garden are great to wash your hair with. Cab is also more than willing to give you information on the best beaches, picnic spots and markets on the island. Another plus is the location of his B&B: a couple of minutes away from the centre of Haleiwa and close to the action of the Banzai Pipeline. A funky place full of good vibes.
