Great north shore location on a quiet beach front property! Staff are friendly and helpful. We will be booking our next visit here. This place is close to Polynesian cultural center. Steps to the ocean from the room. Loved having cooking facilities!

We loved everything about our stay here. The last place we wanted to stay was in the Honolulu area. We did our research. This place was perfect for us. Our family of 5 loved all the beaches in the North shore area, the small local restaurants (all good), shrimp trucks, fresh fish vendors on the side of the road ( fresh ahi tuna cooked on the outdoor bbq's), close grocery stores, the little 9 hole course in Kahuku, the Kahuku Grill, Haleiwa, fishing and hanging with Mick O and so on. The staff at Hale Koo'lau, particularly cousins Oti and Jeff (Thanks Oti for waiting for our 6:30 arrival and Jeff for helping get my keys out of the locked van), were very friendly, looked after us and made us feel at home. Our home for 10 days was everything and more that we imagined. Accurate pictures and description. Large 400sq ft balcony (lanai) 50 ft from the ocean, breezy and very relaxing. The 1200 sq ft home was cozy, comfortable and had everything required for cooking, cleaning etc. Sunrises every morning were perfect. Exactly what we wanted. This was supposed to be our trip of a lifetime, but will probably come back again this year if they have open spots at Christmas.
Listen, if you want to party, be pampered and served all day long, don't stay here. If you like quiet, family adventures/gatherings, exploring the island and generally looking after/keeping to yourselves in a really laid back friendly atmosphere right on the ocean, this is the place to stay hands down. Hot tub at the end of the day was great too! Rooster next door was ok by us as well! Never missed a sunrise!

Room Tip: Stay in a second floor home if possible or side by side and ocean front. Tight for vehicles, nothing...

Aloha & Mahalo for your review, especially pointing out that Hale Koolau is a particular type of destination property for specific types of travelers who are looking for an alternative to the traditional resort scene. We're so happy that you enjoyed your stay and are considering a return but please be aware that our Christmas/New Years vacancies usually fill up shortly after Labor Day.

We came in February with 2 other couples and rented the beautiful beach house. We had a wonderful time. We loved the location, the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating to our needs. Giovanni's shrimp truck along with Papa Olea's has wonderful authentic hawaian food. Halewia Joes was very good for fine dining. Pounders beach was our favorite for boogie boarding. Anything you could possibly want is available for rent at the office. We stayed here for 9 days, and then went to Waikiki for the last 4 days of vacation. We hated every minute in waikiki and kept coming over to the north shore. We will definitely stay here again.

Aloha and mahalo for your review. We're happy to hear that your group enjoyed our country atmosphere and found what you were looking for. We recognize that different travelers, especially depending on their expectations and desires, will prefer entirely different lodging when visiting our islands. The beauty of a Hawaii vacation is that you can have a night-club, high-end shopping, resort-style vacation if you want, or you can also come out to the North Shore and enjoy a slow paced relaxing beach house vacation with family and friends while connecting with nature. We try to be as open and clear to potential guests that we offer the latter and that anyone wanting a more "packaged resort" vacation will probably be disappointed with our option. Again, mahalo for your review.

We stayed in two different properties over a period of almost a week, and highly recommend any visitors who are looking for a little piece of heaven to try this place. You can wake up in the morning to the sound of the surf, mosey down to the edge of the sea to wake up with your tea or coffee, and begin your day there. The north shore of Oahu is a completely different vibe than Waikiki's fast and glitzy pace.... It's really the true feeling of Hawaii. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the place prides itself on being "green."
There are numerous jacuzzis on this multi-unit property if the beach is not for you. Within a mile of Hale Koolau there's a beach that rivals any on the island for beauty, and isn't crowded like the Honolulu beaches.
Five stars!

Mahalo for your kind review and for pointing out what we make as obvious as possible on our website and online marketing: the beaches around our property are the best on the island. We know and openly admit that the beach directly in front of our properties is not a good swimming beach, but there is good swimming just a few minutes walk from our property. Also, our rentals are priced accordingly and the view is stunning. That being said, having spent most of my life in Hauula on that beach I have no problem going out and swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, etc. right in front of Hale Koolau.

We have stayed twice in the last two years in two different houses. Loved both. The "cousins" make you feel at home and are available with any questions you have. The location is priceless. A true dream vacation, especially when you are escaping the Maine winter!

Aloha & Mahalo for being part of our O'hana. We know we are not perfect nor are our properties for every type of traveler, but we feel that the more "seasoned" travelers like yourselves who have experienced the resorts and want to connect with the real Hawaii will truly enjoy what we have to offer time and again.

If you are thinking of getting married in Hawaii and are looking for accommodation for several family and friends all in one location but each with their own space - look no further. Having spent a week at Hale Ko'olau with about 22 family and close friends all staying at Hale Ko'olau as well, we couldn't possibly even begin to imagine a better location.

My husband and I (we were the happy couple getting married) stayed at Nani Kai Hale - the big house. We had our wedding reception there and the large deck and gardens were just beautiful and absolutely perfect. We had about 40 guests from the US and Australia, but easily could have accommodated more. A few tiki torches, a fire dancer, live music and some candles transformed the garden in to a beautiful location to celebrate our union. We ordered our food for the reception from Papa Ole's which is only 300m down the road - it worked out to be $20 a head for the food and not only did everybody rave about it, we had enough leftovers to feed all our guests at Hale Ko'olau the following night and lunch as well. Good Hawaiian food and ohh so tasty!

Before booking, read all the reviews. You will see almost all of them are positive. And when you read the negative reviews, just keep those in the back of your mind - because when you get there, you will just laugh at anybody who was so spoiled and high-and-mighty enough to complain about such trivial things. Of course there will be rust......the houses are literally RIGHT ON THE BEACH!!!!!! Anybody who has ever been to the coast knows what salt water does.

Again - we just can't say enough how wonderful it was to have all our friends and family able to have their own space, but still all be able to congregate at one house or another and interact and get to know each other in an amazingly beautiful setting.

If you are thinking of getting married in Hawaii - check out Kahana Bay for the ceremony (10 min down the road) - but you can't beat Nani Kai Hale for your reception and accommodation. Just PERFECT!!

Room Tip: Rooms next to the highway are noisier. Every house right on the beach is awesome!

Aloha. We're all very happy to hear that your wedding reception and reunion on our property met and exceeded your expectations. Mahalo nui loa for your kind and honest review about what to expect at Hale Koolau. We know we're not the right accommodation type for everyone, but for the travelers who want to get off the beaten path and really relax in a beach house in a local Hawaii community we know we won't disappoint.

We came to Hawai'i for three weeks on holidays and had the idea of renting condos instead of hotelrooms, to spare some costs and to be able to cook by ourselves. After having visited three islands in perfectly fine condos (taken care of by Outrigger) we came to Oahu and booked this condo, Ehu Kai (Seaspray), in advance based upon reviews and pictures on different websites, including Tripadvisor. It had an overall good review so we thought this would be a good change of the Outrigger condos. Bad idea!

First of all, the pictures on the websites do not match the reality. We do have an oceanview, but there's no beach. Not even a possibility to get to a beach where you can swim or just lay about. It's all rocks and stones over here. So the pictures where you can see a beach at the condo are fake, sorry to say!

Second, the condos are outdated, dirty, haven't been taken care of properly in ages!!! A small bathroom with a window you can't even open so fresh air is no option! When we wanted to make coffee, the coffeemaker was dirty inside, still had coffeestains of previous pots being made. The same counts for the cups that were in the cupboard! Even after cleaning them (or trying to) the stayed stained with brown coffeestains! If one has a condo they rent out, make sure that the tools you leave behind for people to use are clean and are well maintained!

Third, and this bugged us really hard, we just arrived... and they state on their website to contact them that you are on your way which we didn't do because we didn't think necessary for we were in time and had no hurry getting here. Lucky for us we did arrive in time because apparently they charge you for late arrival (which in their case is later than 1pm)! Although everything in the condo is old and shabby and pretty outdated, we did get a modern way (via iPad) of filling in a series of forms such as liability, costs if you stain sheets, charges for every extra roll of toiletpaper/paper towels (in case of need) AND!!!! if you leave your airconditioning on during the day when you are gone to the beach or wherever, they will give you a warning and the second time you leave it on, a !!!$100!!! fine!! And they check every day at 11am!! Military camps aren't even that strict!

In conclusion: if you come to stay here beware that you'll end up in an old, quite dirty condo. Four managers on te property (including a housekeeping manager): you wonder how this could be even possible. If we hadn't paid the entire amount in advance, we would have left and stayed in Waikiki or maybe Turtle Bay because proximity of a beach and most certain cleaner rooms/condo!

Btw, if you want to have late dinner (let's say at 8pm) you'll have to drive to Honolulu/Waikiki area because over here all is closed at 6pm! And cooking at the condo, in this condition, was no option!

Aloha. As with all reviews we do thank you for taking the time to let us know how you felt about your stay, although we do completely disagree with your assessment of our properties. It sounds like you really should have stayed in Waikiki in a resort area among the Hotels and that you are not the type of traveler who can appreciate beachfront cottages. I'm confident that anyone reading your absurd review will dismiss it out of hand when they see our overall satisfaction rate. Of course, if anyone reading your review is more inclined to want to stay in a resort then they should avoid our properties and we'll all be happy for it.
I stayed in the Ehu Kai studio just last month for a few days and everything worked properly...and yes the bathroom window does open. Upon arrival you have the opportunity to inspect the rental and request any spot cleaning/additional cleaning if you are not satisfied. I have the document you singed stating that you were completely happy and taking possession of the rental. Why would anyone sign the document if the rental was as you have claimed?
Finally, our local restaurants are generally open until around 9-10pm, so your claim that they closed at 6pm and you had to drive into Waikiki to eat is laughable. We make no secret that we are located in the country and that our guests will experience rural island living as opposed to the resort scene. We also think its incredibly wasteful when people leave A/Cs running all day long to cool an oceanfront unit that is not occupied...don't you have any consideration for our environment? Shame on you!
