Our family is on the last day (thankfully) of a four day stay at Turtle Bay. We have a villa with three bedrooms which is nice and comfortable and I assume the rooms in the hotel are comfortable as well though looking at the hotel building I see that many of them feature a balcony that is about 24 inches wide with just enough space for a small chair. On the other side of the building the balconies are slightly larger. All of the rooms are quite exposed and I would guess not many guests enjoy opening their sliding doors as the wind is quite strong and rain very frequent. The beach in front of the hotel is pretty but quite crowded and many non hotel guests use it as well. The beach on the other side of the property in front of the "cottage" section of the hotel is pretty but fairly unswimmable, at least at this time of year. A few surfers are out there but even they are few. The hotel pool is small but well heated and there is a small slide that the kids enjoy. Towels are large and soft and there are a fair amount of chairs available though it has rained so much we have not been sitting there and competition for them may be more extreme if the sun is out. These parts of the hotel are adequate but far below the standards of many, many other Hawaii hotels that can be had for similar prices. In addition there are no restaurants within a 20 minute or more drive besides those on the hotel property. There is a pool bar and grill that is adequate, a large hotel style indoor restaurant that we have not yet tried but have heard is nothing special. There is a nice place on the beach that has food we enjoy and service we find very puzzling. There is a bar that you can't sit in unless they seat you which seems to be hard to achieve as they are always "expecting reservations" so tables sit empty while you wait in the waiting area. They are happy to let you have a cocktail while you sit there. Needless to say we passed on that experience. The hotel lobby has a coffee/pastry bar that is a good breakfast stop and some surf style stores that are okay. The overall appearance of the lobby is very bland and sterile, not a place I'd want to hang out. Bottom line, you can do so much better for weather, beach, rooms, pool, food and service. Unless you are a North Shore die hard, looking for waves I'd advise going to a different area or a different Island.

Our daughter treated us to an ocean-side room which came with an incredible view. She bought the breakfast package, and because it was a family reunion, the hotel (Carol) upgraded us to a suite. Beautiful room, beautiful view, luxury bathroom, fabulous breakfast. And the assistant manager sent up a fruit basket to our room! No hotel has ever done that for us, before. We recommend anyone who wants a real Hawaiian experience just come straight up to Turtle Bay, and skip all the other Oahu locations.

Stayed here our last night as we wanted to get away from the condo we rented on the (very busy) Kam Highway. Turtle Bay (TB) was about 5 miles up the road, but was a world away as far as the escape we experienced from the hustling North Shore full of surfers driving from surf spot to surf spot on the very busy and too-treacherous-to-walk-along Kam Highway. We showed up unannounced at TB and booked a room in the main hotel overlooking the beautiful bay. Room was immaculate. Beds were very comfortable. Food and service at Lei Leis was awesome. Surfer Bar was really nice and fun. Nice little breakfast bar in the lobby. Parking was free and very easily accessible. Support staff were all very friendly and accommodating. Snorkeling was amazing (I saw a variety of colorful fish and a turtle). Walked back on one of their beach trails and was alone for most of my 2-mile hike. It was an awesome trail which was shaded through a small grove of trees which resembled pine trees right along the virtually unoccupied beach. My only regret is that we didn't get to spend more time there. I wanted to rent a bike and really explore, ride a horse, play some tennis, rent a kayak, rent a stand up paddle board and relax there. The pool bar was very nice and situated between the pool and the sea with lovely views. If you're traveling with an avid surfer, the north shore is the place to be. If you want luxury and comfort, TB is your pick. We stayed a day in Waikiki and found it too crowded (although Moana Surfrider Hotel is also super nice). I think my preference though will be to return to TB. We drove all around the island and stopped at some local places for spectacular plate lunches. Also hit up the grocery store a few miles from TB and although it was a bit pricey, it was still doable. All in all, we had a wonderful time at TB and highly recommend it. We'll definitely be back. Mahalo!
