“Andrew at the bar”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

Me and a few mates negotiated a night off from the family and headed to the surfer bar. Andrew was our bartender and we threw all types of orders at him. He kept on impressing us with his knowledge of drinks and served us some fantastic mixes and shots.

Personal favourites were "Surfer on Acid" and the "Dirty 'gators"

Good job buddy!

We've been to oahu a few times now but we never stayed at the northshore side. We would definitely go back to this side and to this hotel! The kids love this hotel, especially the pool:). The staff are really helpful and friendly. Special thanks to Julie and Kit for making our stay much fun!

Our room was 466, Epic Ocean View, best views. Balcony had comfy lounges. Staff not impressive. Best meals were at Le Le's. Eat off site. Pool is small filled with kids. I hated the towel card system! Lobby lounge sold coffee in morning, long lines, no comp coffee service. Lobby lounge had live music at night, loud and irritating due to poor aucostics.
Beach area nicer then pool but got crowded. Pay for covered lounges, $25 bucks 4hrs. $40 per day. Only had a few so come early. Other people use beach area from condos, tons of condos on site. My biggest issue with this place, which is not cheap, is the fact they know they are the only resort on North Shore so service is poor and food only average because they book up regardless so do not have to be very service oriented. Of course we had some wonderful staff experiences but they were the exception to the bulk of uncaring, unhappy staffers.
If you like to golf, this is your place since they are on a very nice giant course. I do not golf so did not have appreciation for their course. For better food and snorkeling go to Ted's bakery, Matsumoto's, Shark's Cove and many other better places to eat at and enjoy the lovely North Shore.

Room Tip: Get a room higher then level 3 for best views. The wing that is on the point, there are 3 wings, is...

Green Features: this hotel did not recycle very much to none. I was very surprised since the North Shore was very sensitive about this issue.

The North Shore of Hawaii is stunning – white sand beaches, sparkling blue ocean and still relatively underdeveloped. Turtle Bay Resort is the only “5 star” resort option in the area, coming from overseas and booking relatively late it was the easiest and most obvious accommodation choice.

The resort itself sits on a point between two beaches – one small beach and bay where it’s possible to snorkel and another rockier beach with a rolling break (in summer) for surfing etc. We booked a three bedroom villa that was effectively a unit in a 3 level semi-circle apartment block overlooking the dedicated villa pool and onwards to the beach and bay. There was a lot to like about the accommodation. We had a balcony overlooking the pool with table, chairs and a sunlounge; a large master bedroom with walk-in robe and spacious bathroom; lounge; dining room and well equipped kitchen. All three bedrooms had their own TV and the washing machine and dryer in the apartment were greatly valued and much used. We were lucky to be on the 3rd and highest floor and villa guests have dedicated parking hence didn’t need to battle to find a space in the hotel/public park.

Food wise, we ate at Lei Lei’s at the Golf Club that had a pretty vista looking out over the greens. The food was reasonable, fairly typical resort fare – chicken, steak etc. We also had the buffet breakfast at the resort once (if you are coming from Australia don’t expect the huge 5 star hotel layout) but having said that what was there was well cooked reasonable food with the tailored omelette the highlight. The pool bar/restaurant had fresh fish and chips, good burgers etc. Our final night dinner at Ola was excellent – great service, view out over the beach and nice fresh fish. The coffee available from the lounge in reception wasn’t great but hit the mark for a morning caffeine fix. The prices were fairly typical of a resort.

If you have a car there are some good eating options outside; turn left out of the resort and a 10 minute drive will offer you food vans with surprisingly tasty meals. A 30 minute drive the other way will take you into Haleiwa and a multitude of restaurants, we ate at Lusbueno’s a Mexican place that had fresh innovative dishes and a great atmosphere. Because we had a kitchen we ended up self-catering a few nights (using the resort’s barbecue on one occasion). Foodland was only a 10-15 minute drive away.

The hotel’s main swimming pool is lovely with heaps of sun lounges, the beach is quite small, busy on a weekend (as it’s also open to the public) and the snorkelling very average (for experienced snorkelers). If you want to snorkel drive 15 minutes and go to Shark Cove (just before Foodland). It looks busy but once in the water there is plenty of space, I saw a turtle, eels and heaps of fish. We did a few dives with Dive Ecology (recommended by the resort) that were enjoyable, particularly the Shark Cove night dive.

We ran out of time to try the Turtle Bay surf but the waves rolled in very calmly and it looked like it would be a good place to learn or enjoy a gentle ride. Another great option is Kawela Bay (1 mile walk from the resort) or drive and park near the fruit van and follow the path near the yellow fire hydrant. A lovely white sand beach that is not too busy because it can’t be seen from the road.

The other resort activities/facilities we enjoyed were horse riding (fairly short trails but lovely scenery), exercise classes (good instructor), jogs along the resort paths and some spa treatments that were all high quality. There is so much to do on the North Shore, we didn’t make it to Waimea Falls; the Pineapple or Soap factories etc.

The only negative to our stay and the reason I won’t give the resort 5 stars, was some average customer service at check in and from the concierge. In addition, our villa had complicated appliances and grossly inadequate written instructions e.g. TV in lounge had hundreds of channels (mostly foreign language it seemed) with no guide and the TV would constantly “hang” if you moved through the channels too quickly. A proper onsite orientation to the villa at check in would have been appreciated, especially based on the very high cost of the accommodation. It doesn’t matter that these villas are privately owned, booking through the resort it’s the resort’s responsibility to ensure that guests know how things work. The air conditioning unit in the cupboard was also very loud for the person in the bedroom opposite and the time out after 2 hours annoying. Housekeeping only came once a day instead of the promised twice (not really a big deal but reflective of some of the service issues generally).

In summary we would happily return to the beautiful North Shore of Hawaii.

Aloha, We’re glad you loved the North Shore. It sounds like you had a great time not only exploring our 840 acres, but the North Shore as a whole. We hope you made memories horseback riding & running to Kawela Bay. The front desk manager will look over your review and advise staff accordingly. Thank you for staying with us at Turtle Bay and we hope to have the honor of serving you again someday. Mahalo.

Nice resort with friendly staff. We were greeted by Seth, who took our luggage to our room when we first arrived. The hotel is very clean and beautifully landscaped. We had a room with an ocean view. Our room was spotless and nicely decorated. Erlinda (housekeeping) was great about making sure we had everything we needed. We ate at a few restaurants on the resort with a picky eater. Must have breakfast at Ted’s Bakery off the property, great food! This was such a nice summer vacation and we truly enjoyed our stay. Thank you Turtle Bay staff!!! We’ll definitely be coming back!

We normally avoid Oahu and prefer the more rural islands, but my husband and son had never been to Pearl Harbor and we decided to spend 6 days on the island. The hotel is immaculate; nicely landscaped. I've never stayed anywhere that has housekeeping come TWICE a day! It is so quiet we didn't thought the rooms around us were empty. The pool is warm, there are plenty of activities on-site or nearby, staff is friendly. The beaches nearby are all unique and a short drive, and the hotel beach is fine if you never leave the resort. There are reefs and you see plenty of fish including eels and Humu right at the Hotel beach, plus sea turtles galore. If you are willing to walk about 3/4 a mile, you can find a stretch of beach that is totally secluded. Only complaint is that the nice beach chairs cost $50-$75 a day to rent, and while they give you free "court time" you have to pay to rent tennis racquets. I would think the resort fee would cover this. But; I can't complain too much. There were lots of things included in the resort fee such as a "fire dance" and ukulele lessons. I hope to come back in a few years.

Room Tip: We had a family suite (one of the end rooms, with a king sized bed and sleep sofa in a section parti...

Very nice resort and helpful staff. When we booked they stated that we would get a ground floor villa, however when we got her that was not what we got. They did not have a villa open on the ground floor, but would in a few days. They moved all of our baggage and food to the new villa...poor Seth! Our room was spotless every day and the turn down town service what great! Thank you Teora for taking good care of our room and us. The pool staff was great, thank you spencer for watching out for my son on the water slide! They only downfall is the location of the resort. It was really far from everything.

Room Tip: Villas were quiet and secluded.
