The Kawainui wetlands park and trail is a really pretty walk through a marsh of international importance. It gets hot if the sun is out, so take a little water to keep hydrated but make sure not to leave any trash behind. You might see coots, ducks, moorhens, stilts, egrets, and various small neighborhood birds such as myna birds, doves, and cardinals among others as you walk or run along. The mountains are beautiful, and the trail is very flat and easy. It's about 1.5 miles one way. Lots of people use this trail for exercise. Don't go off the trail because the marsh is a nature preserve. It has no bathrooms to my knowledge. It's really just a short and lovely walking trail.

A historic marsh with plenty of wildlife, this marsh has numerous historic sites on its banks that remind us it was a revered area for the Hawaiians for centuries before WWII, and the establishment of Kaneohe Marine Corps Station--which rapidly changed the face of the Kaneohe-Kailua areas. An elevated walk way on top of a protective levy offers an easy walk and up-close observation. A good choice for nature lovers who desire an easy walk in the outdoors.

Kawainui Marssh is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and is not open to the public for recreation. Endangered native Hawaiian birds are protected here.
It is NOT a tourist attraction nor a place for recreation....

This is an easy walk which you can enjoy--walking on cement or gravel. Next to you is the marsh, the greenness and variety of greens are spectacular.
You don't hear cars and loud music! You also don't hear the bicycles coming up behind you (which I wish weren't allowed at all).
Ducks and other birds frequently pose for your camera. Kids and elderly people can enjoy this beside the jogger and the parking is free and appears safe!
The walk is level and there is no shade, so an early morning or late afternoon trek will be more enjoyable!
