We stayed at Amanda’s in her second level unit in January 2009, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. She also rents another unit on the first level directly underneath. Amanda and her family live in a third unit in the same building.
The unit itself is as advertised in the VRBO and Amanda’s websites. The place has a very bright and clean appearance, the furnishing are all in good condition, and the place is quite spacious. It could easily house five people. It has a very open feeling, with vaulted ceilings. The front room contains the living room area on one side and a queen bed on the other. A door can separate it from the rest of the unit. In the middle are a spacious bathroom and a large walk-in closet, which worked well for hanging clothes and storing suitcases. Behind is the room with the kitchen on one side and the twin and double beds on the other. The kitchen was well equipped. There is no stove/oven but the 2 burner plate worked well. If you really wanted to roast a turkey there is a large gas grill at ground level outside. There is also an electric fry pan and rice cooker, toaster, blender etc. Note that there is no disposal or dishwasher. This room also contains an internet connected PC. If you need to do laundry, there is a Laundromat in the area.
The walk to the beach is convenient enough: a half block to Kalaheo Ave., cross the street and you’re a few steps to the beach access, which is most of the 300 yard walk.
The property is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. The loudest thing we heard in the morning was the birds and an occasional barking dog (no roosters). Evenings were very quiet. It’s so quiet and peaceful here that I’d think this is no place to bring a loud party atmosphere. People really do live here.
The property itself is not a destination. To entertain yourself go to the beach or sight seeing. Amanda’s property is mostly paved over to accommodate parking so you don’t get a garden feel here, except for in the back where there is a small sitting area nestled among some plants. A mini fountain has continuous running water, which gives a pleasant sound. We hit a rainy week (and this is the wet side of the island) but on sunny days this looked like it could be a pleasant place to have a meal.
Since this is a residence, you will see some things lying around and the garage is full of stuff. One could get a first impression of a junky feel around the garage, but hey, this is a residence not a resort property.
The balcony is actually rather more like a walkway, but if one wanted to just sit and read there are two sliding glass doors which open to the balcony and one could sit at the door or in the unit with everything opened up. The balcony overlooks the neighborhood, so you’re seeing rooftops and gardened yards.
We found Amanda quite personable and accommodating. The welcome basket of chocolates, water and coffee was a nice touch.
The place was clean, but the shower curtain did have some mold on it and there was some dust in such places as windowsills, some counters, computer, and vent openings. Despite an ample supply of ant traps set out (maybe getting a bit old) there were a few tiny red ants running around, so I’d be careful about leaving food out and take out any organic garbage. We also killed a couple of small cockroaches in the bathroom, but again this is the sub-tropics.
Overall, this is a fine place for a quite stay on the windward side of Oahu. There is shopping nearby and none of the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. The drive to Honolulu is about a half hour and it’s a beautiful drive.
