Great hike but there were so many people on the pillbox waiting for the sunrise that we couldn't even get on/in.

This hike is not for the faint of heart. The trail is often steep and narrow. If there have been recent rains, expect slippery mud. There is very limited parking. Perhaps ride your bike to the site?

Do yourself a favor - go online and look at the pictures but don't bother trying to actually go to the Lanikai Pillboxes. For one thing, its trespassing. But probably more important, there are no facilities, no parking, dangerously eroded trails and way, way, way too many people. Once again, Trip Advisor, along with its Internet travel promotion brethren has helped ruin what was, once, a very pleasant hiking experience. You travelers who mindlessly follow whatever TripAdvisor promotes, know this, you are helping ruin the very places that were inspirational before you and millions of others found out about them.

Best to go early in the day when it isn't too hot. Park at Kailua beach park and walk into lanikai (that way you will not be trapped in lanikai when the traffic backs up). Go when it has not rained for a few days, so the trail is not slippery and wear good shoes. The trail is not maintained and so is really a scramble up a steep ridge. Moderate skill level hike.

Parking is limited on a one lane one way roadway. Read the signs or your vehicle maybe cited and towed. Take the city bus $2 one way fare but runs once an hour. You'll need a free transfer from the major bus line. Call TheBus (808) 848-4500 for schedules and bus lines to get you there. Very economical. It's an uphill dirt man made trail so if you're a visitor, ask the locals about prior days weather. You'll need to hold and pull on to the vegetation. Injury is possible if you're unsteady and unfit. There should be others on the narrow trail so maybe an hour hike. It extends further but the wind and rain could be hazardous. Not for children <10. Locals get upset at the trash dropped on the roadway. Up at the top we found empty water and soda containers. AUWE! Be respectful! Bring lotion, camera and dress lightly. It's breathtaking!
