“It's ok if you don't want to wait for the line at Cinnamons”
Reviewed 27 February 2012

We stopped here after our sunrise photoshoot from the Lanikai Pillbox. We actually stopped at Cinnamon's in Kailua hoping to pick up some takeout since the wait for a table is CRAZY on the weekends. We were disappointed to find out Cinnamon's doesn't do takeout orders on weekends or holidays.

So, off we went to Times Coffee Shop on Hamakua (note, Big City Diner had a waiting line too). We had heard great things about Times Coffee Shop, but perhaps it was better in the past. The service was fabulous we must say. The waiters and waitresses are all local and very welcoming/accommodating. I asked for sugar free syrup and they were genuinely sorry they didn't have it.

The food however, wasn't too great. We ordered 2 dishes - buttermilk pancakes short stack and the eggs with potatoes. The pancakes were $6.25, good sized but the bottom pancake was a bit overdone, one corner tasted burnt and the rest was just dry and kinda hard. The top pancake was halfway over cooked. The top part of the pancake was fabulous - light and fluffy like a buttermilk pancake should be but the bottom was overdone and a bit hard. I ended up cutting the bottom of the pancake off. We also ordered the eggs with homefried potatoes for $4.95 or so. The eggs were fine....scrambled eggs. The potatoes would have been good but they tasted soapy. We were starving so my boyfriend ate it anyway. They bring your toast out EARLY. The nice thing about that is, they forgot they gave us the toast, so we got a second order with our breakfast! The toast was great.

If you're thinking about trying this place, it is a hole in the wall. It does look old, but everything was clean. We love hole in the wall places - the food a lot of times is great and affordable.

We probably won't be stopping here again.

“Good basic breakfast.”

This place get's busy on the weekend. They served a very tasty 2 egg breakfast and their banana bread pancakes were delicious. I tried the Vanilla Mac Nut coffee and didn't like it.

“Delicious local food, affordable price”
Reviewed 3 November 2011

I am a local to the Hawaiian Islands (born and raised) and just recently discovered this "diner" recently. The exterior is very off-putting which is why I never bothered to so much taking a second look at this place. However, a family member recently visited this eatery to take advantage of a promotion and loved it! So my family decided to give it a try. To my surprise, it was crowded! They had the best local style breakfast there! Sure the floors are sticky, the vinyl on the chairs are peeling, and service is below par; but the food is fantastic! The patrons are 90% local and the restaurant is packed. You will have to sign in and wait an average of 15 min for a table. If you are visiting, and want to experience how locals treat themselves to comfort food, this is a must if you are in the Kailua area. Aside from the mac nut pancakes at infamous Boots and Kimos a block away (min 1 hr wait), this place has the best fried rice in town. I recommend this to all my friends. If you are looking for more of a maintstream eatery and have a conservative palate, this is not the place for you. But if you are more of an adventurous eater who want to see how the locals do breakfast, this is the place for you.

“Utterly dreadful”
Reviewed 1 July 2011

This place has moved now, it's opposite the Valley of the Temples in Kaneohe.

It's absolute garbage. Horrible, horrible food - what they called chicken seriously was NOT chicken, I suspect it was manflesh - and even the soda machine clearly wasn't working properly, the drinks were rubbish.

Don't stop, just keep driving.
