Owner description: Considered one of the toughest courses in the nation, and named one of the top three golf clubs in Hawaii by Golf Digest, this magnificent golf course was carved out of a rain forest on the windward side of the 2,000-foot Ko'olau mountain range.

My partner and I were at the Ko'olau Ballrooms to attend a wedding, and overall we felt that this is a nice event space except it had power lines running through it.

The location is great, sitting in the valley of the Ko'olau Mountains, and the views are spectacular. I will say that because it's not on the Honolulu, gets more rain and clouds being on the Windward side. There was a stark change of weather even while we are there.

That being said, I'm only really reviewing the event space, as we didn't actually play golf. It was relatively easy to get to, right off the H3, so that's always good. There are different event spaces located at the Ko'olau Ballrooms, some have more sweeping views than others. But I will say that the huge electric power lines running through even where the ceremony spaces is rather distracting. I noticed during the ceremony, but then afterwards once people were taking pictures, the power lines don't obscure pictures of the Valley, which is the most important aspect.

The staff at the Ko'olau Ballrooms were uniformly friendly, and the event itself went off without a hitch. It's not the most luxurious or picturesque or touristy setting for a wedding you can have in Hawaii, but I'm sure it's 1/4 of the price of anything on Waikiki.

This was a brief stop for lunch as part of the "grand circle trip " tours that are popular on the island. The restaurant service & meal was fairly mediocre yet they automatically charge you gratuities included in the bill. There is no opting out. This is certainly not acceptable, bad practice and should not be condoned. Gratuities are always optional & should be left up to the customer.
In our 4 day holiday in Hawaii this was the only eatery we came across that were doing this.

The Koolau Golf Course is by far the most beautiful course I have had the pleasure to play. The scenery is breathtaking. it is also the toughest golf challange that i have had as a 10 to 12. handicaper. There are some strange holes ie tee shot of 170 meters then a second of 220???
My Partner and I lost 6 balls in the first three holes but then decided to play a bit smarter. it is not a course where you can "grip it and rip it". if you dont hit the ball straight be prepared to be very frustrated. that is why i cant give it a 5.

The views from this golf course are worth the price. It is a very difficult course but just ring extra golf balls. It really does not matter what you shoot on the course the scenic views will be worth it.
Nothing can describe the beauty of this course. Be sure to play this golf course if you. Arron the island.

I've played St.Andrews, Ballybunion, Carnoustie and all in howling winds. This course is carved out of the Oahu mountainside and has at least a 100 yard carry on most of its holes off the tee. If you are not on the fairway, forget it. The scenery however is breathtaking as every tee or green has a view of the massive cliffs that rise sharply up behind the course. it is a real test but one well worth the effort. Don't expect much from the clubhouse though when you finish, average food and if you don't drive out, book a cab as soon as you finish.
