We had extra DVC Points to use and booked a regular King room for 3 nights at the Aulani. In 2012 we used our DVC Points for a 2 bedroom Villa. The regular hotel room was fine for the two of us, but wished management would have assigned us an ocean view room or at least a higher floor island view ... what we got was the 4th floor island view overlooking the parking garage (nice way to treat your DVC family Aulani). A request for something better was denied because the hotel was "sold out".
We took all of our meals off property and highly recommend the short walk across the road to the retail center and eat at Monkey Pod or Just Tacos, or take the free Ko Olina resort shuttle to dine at Roy's in the country club. A few minutes drive up the highway will access Kapolei with many restaurant options (average prices, geared to locals); or buy & cook your own at Costco or Wal Mart.
Overall the improvements made to the water park since 2012 are great (no more sting ray pool) and we liked staff enforcement of the adult-only policy for the pool and certain hot tubs, and the no saving of pool seats after an hour. Some pool staff were great at enforcing, others not so much so.
My only critique, which I have not read in many recent reviews, is that the Mikimiki Fitness Room is not as well equipped as when the Resort first opened. It seems that more weight machines were eliminated and more cardio machines were added to the limited space there. This is a disappointment for anyone wanting to keep up their fitness regimen while on vacation. The weight machines that were left were primarily limited to focusing on legs. For a Resort of this caliber, I would hope the Aulani invests in a larger variety of weight machines (there is space to do so).
We would return simply because we are DVC owners who live on the West Coast and flying to Hawaii is not that difficult. Overall, its a great place for families with pre-teen children or families traveling with other friends or family members. There are many other options that are quieter and more romantic for just couples (unless you are a Mickey Mouse fanatic).
