Spent the week of 26-April through 3-May at Ko Olina. We chose this week to not coincide with the school spring breaks associated with Easter because we did not want to be overrun with kids, as some reviewers have noted. This week was very pleasant, no overcrowding anywhere, no long waits at the restaurants, and very little noise in the pools and hallways.
We are owners at this resort, since 2006.
Registration was easy, arriving at 3:00, there was no line and our requests for room specifics were quickly reviewed and managed. Room was ready right away. (We had used the advance room request information that the resort sent us a week earlier to get our desires logged before we arrived.)
We got a 9th floor, pool-facing room in the main building. We like this building the best because it has easy access to the front desk, the main concierge desk, the Marketplace store, housekeeping support, and other support services like the new Enterprise car rental desk, the airport shuttle and the business center. The other buildings have abbreviated forms of these services.
The one-bedroom suite was fully equipped, and recently upgraded. new flat screen TVs, with blue-ray disc players, nifty charging stations in the bedroom, 6 place settings of china and silverware, a rice cooker, full oven, full-sized refrigerator, washer/dryer combo, dishwasher and two basin kitchen sink with disposal. A welcome kit included some dishwasher soap, some coffee packs, some clothes washer soap, and various other nice things that helped out on the first day before we could get to Costco for the big shop. There were enough towels for 6 people, and when we asked for towel exchange it was practically instantaneous. Everything in the room worked at first and throughout the week.
Several newspapers are available in the lobby each morning at no charge.
The Longboards grill, formerly "Kolohe's" has most of the same menu items we'd seen on prior visits. Food was decent, if expensive, and the evening live music was pleasant most of the time. Our favorite snack: garlic fries.
The MarketPlace store has been revamped a little. It has more coffee selections, and has the ability to cook some food items behind the counter.
A new pool/beach towel system has been implemented, so that you are given some towel cards which you can exchange for towels in the pool area. Exchange the towels back into cards when you return them. If you lose the towel or the card, you will be charged 25$, so keep track of stuff. Wrist bands are given to every guest, but it does not seem as if they needed to enforce them this week.
Our favorite, the "Fia Fia" luau, has been replaced with a new program, and we did not attend it. We were told that the Chief is now performing at another venue on the island, so if you need to see him and his performers, you can look it up. We went to Paradise Cove Luau, a short distance up the way, using the Ko Olina Resort Shuttle.
At one point during our stay we needed to get to a doctor, and the concierge had a full list and maps to local urgent care centers and other medical facilities. As always, the concierge desk is helpful and makes a real effort to get you what you need. Way to go, Tina!
The fear that the Disney Aulani resort would swamp the area with new people and kids has not come to fruit. The Disney resort is crazy with kids, as expected, but they and their families tended to stay in their resort and at their lagoon.
We'll be back!
