“Wonderful stay in the Zen Treehouse...”
Reviewed 2 February 2010

Just returned from a fantastic trip to Hawaii that ended with a 5-night stay at Hale Nalo in the top floor unit (Zen Treehouse).

I can't say enough great things about this place. The proprietor (Herlinda) is so gracious and provided us with everything we could have asked for. She was always there when we needed anything, but never was intrusive.

We arrived late on our first night and found the place stocked with tropical juices, coffee beans waiting to be ground and a bowl of Bananas, Papayas and Pineapple. There is a full kitchen with all the cooking equipment you'll need (including a coffee grinder).

The place is essentially one huge area with a 15 ft. + high cathedral ceiling, and is divided into sections (kitchen, living area, bedroom, large walk-in closet, bathroom). It is decorated beautifully and feels more like you are staying at a friends house than in a hotel. It is very, very comfortable and we felt right at home instantly.

It is well designed in that you are on the upper level of the "house" but you are not directly above anyone else (the unit is above a "common area"), so we never felt worried that we might be disturbing anyone while we were there.

The grounds of the place are really nice, surrounded by trees and birds. It sounds like you're in a tropical jungle once the sun comes up!

Hale Nalo is located at the end of a quiet, residential street, and is about 100-yards from a small path leading to the beach. And what a beach it is! Waimanalo Beach is a stretch of pristine white sand and the most vibrant blue water you'll ever see. Oh and I almost forgot, the beach is nearly deserted! We were laying on the beach on a Saturday afternoon and saw maybe 7 other people in about 3-hours. Gorgeous. Plus, it's only about 20 mins into Honolulu, so it's really easy to get into town.

Herlinda has shelves stocked with any beach gear you could want (Chairs, beach towels, coolers, boogie boards, grass mats, etc). It's all really convenient.

There is no air conditioning in the Zen Treehouse unit, but we didn't really find the need for it other than one night. It was so windy, we had to shut the windows because things were blowing around inside, and that made it a little bit sticky, but like I said, that was only one night.

The only other thing that is a little bit tricky is the parking situation. You go through a gated driveway and there is limited parking when the place is fully booked. But even that is no big deal as four cars can fit inside the gated area.

Overall, I'd have to say that this was one of the nicest places we've stayed in our travels. It's a beautiful property with great amenities, and a really nice owner. Highly recommended.

Where do I start? As a former resident of Oahu returning for his wedding and honeymoon I am not sure me and my wife could have selected a better getaway on our favorite Island and on our favorite part of the Island. First of all, the accommodations at Hale Nalo and more specifically the Zen Treehouse are top of the line! I can't speak for the "bungalows" below the Treehouse but they looked very nice and had everything you would need for an extended stay in Paradise. However, the Zen Treehouse.....Incredible! Just about everything is top of the line. Herlinda, the hostess and owner, has clearly spared no expense in modeling/furnishing and designing this oasis in Waimanalo. From the gorgeous hardwood floors to the adjustable blinds to the fantastic garden shower and bathroom and the vaulted ceiling wood beams. You are provided with everything you need from a full size refrigerator to a mini oven and even a portable gas burner to cook your own meals. Fresh fruit was provided our first day as well as fresh coffee beans in our fridge and a coffee bean grinder to last us our whole stay! There is also a brand new state of the art 4 burner propane grill at your disposal on her garden grounds. And finally, I can't forget to mention the King size bed. Hands down the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in.

Next, there is the location. Waimanalo is in our opinion one of the most beautiful parts of the Island of Oahu. Living in Oahu we would frequently visit the beach here as it was one of our favorites. Hale Nalo is located in Prime Real Estate of Waimanalo. It is nestled back EXTREMELY close to the beach. For those of you whos main attraction is locating a rental property close to the beach this is the place to be. Hale Nalo is located DIRECTLY on a beach access point. This is important as it means it is just about a 1 minute walk to the most secluded part of Waimanalo Beach. It is a busy day on this Beach if you see more than 10 people within 100 yards of you (seriously!). This isn't Waikiki. This is a Corona commercial.

Herlinda provides you with snorkel gear, boogie boards, towels, coolers, mats and chairs to use at the beach so no need wasting money on buying that stuff at an ABC store and having to lug it back home. We left some raft floaties there for the next visitors so feel free to use those if you go ;)

Finally, stay at Hale Nalo for the accomodations, the location, direct access and proximity to one of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu and the hospitality of your hostess, Herlinda. Stay at the Zen Treehouse if you want to experience absolute relaxation in exquisite style and luxury. Open up all the windows and get an almost 360 degree panoramic view the beautiful scenery and fall asleep to the sounds of the waves rolling in and wake up to a cool breeze and the birds chirping softly. No need for an alarm clock (in fact there isnt even one provided or even a clock.....you wont need it). Coupled with the relaxing atmosphere and amazingly comfortable bed you will rest soundly and wake refreshed. Pick up some food at the local groceries and stock up for your time there. Take advantage of the accommodations and more importantly turn off your cell, PDA and Laptop. If you're an early riser take your coffee or tea to the beach around sunrise and watch it come up right before your eyes. If you are a night owl, grab a bottle of wine and take a chair out to the beach and star gaze while you hear high tide come in. You will truly be on Island time and take pity on all the fools who waste their time in Hawaii on the crowded streets and beaches of Waikiki. This is the TRUE Hawaii.

Aloha!

Finding solitude and a beautiful, tranquil beach on the most populated island of Hawaii, Oahu, was a refreshing way to spend our Christmas this year. Staying at the Hale Nalo Vacation Rental in Waimanalo gave us the best of both worlds. Herlinda Lopez, the hostess, made us feel at home in the Zen Tree House that she decorated with the utmost simple elegance. This colorful, well aerated space had a modern, well-equipped kitchen, unique and spacious bathroom, and two balconies including a barbecue all surrounded by a beautiful, lush garden. The location was nice, with a view of the cliff of Koolau on one side and hearing the waves crash from the nearby beach on the other side. Waking up to the kitchen filled with fresh pineapple, local bananas, and the best coffee beans ready to be ground added to the relaxing nature of our stay. If your body and mind were not already positively influenced by the serene surroundings, browsing some of Herlinda's book selection will intensify your vacationing spirit. This tranquility is within driving distance of the good restaurants of Kailua (on that subject, treat yourself to Formaggio's restaurant) and Waikiki is not too far either. We truly enjoyed the stay!

My husband and I were extremely happy with our rental. We had exactly what we needed a kitchenette to make breakfast and warm left overs up if needed, all the amenities of home. A quiet place were the tourist were not Yeah!! We really needed a place to lay back and feel like home and Herlinda's were exactly that. I'll be there on my next trip.

Staying at the Hale Nalo gave us the experience of the naturalness of Hawaii: private setting with lush landscaping, distant views of the mountains and convenient access to a beautiful, quiet beach. Honolulu, local attractions and outdoor activities are all within easy reach.

The garden suite felt like home. It was immaculate, spacious, airy and peaceful! Herlinda alway made you feel welcome, was happy to answer questions and offered great suggestions.

We are so happy to have stayed here in lieu of an impersonal hotel or resort. It gave us the opportunity to experience what island living is really like. I would not only recommend the Hale Nalo to my close friends but also my parents!

If you are looking for a real Hawai'ian experience away from all the glitz and craziness of Honolulu look no further. Hale Nalo is a short thirty minutes from HNL in a small local village with the most beautiful beach you could hope for. The suites are modern yet simple but clean and comfortable with everything you need in the way of conveniences. If you are going to stay for more than a couple of days I would suggest the Zen Treehouse. Urban conveniences such as dining and shopping are within short drive. Herlinda really goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable and welcomed. We will definitely be back!

We loved the decor that Herlinda has applied in way of soothing colors ; from the flooring to the walls and bedding.
It was wonderful to come back to her place after a full day on the "other side of the island" and come to a restful place with a view of the tropical garden. The drive from the "other side of the island" is not not very far at all and a view to behold whether you come thru the tunnel or along the seaside. What a treasure. Everything needed for the week, was available to the guest. Next time, i will not over -pack with clothes
Very restful and beautifully located . We miss terribly the morning sunrises and warm water
