We stayed in a guest house for 6 nights. Clean, good furniture, nice views. Good for one couple only. Dont stay here with kids, we managed it but it was not perfect. 15 minutes drive to a good beach. Best food options - is Whole Foods ( 15 min drive). Owner, Kitty, is a very welcoming and helpful.

“Lovely Rural Experience”
Reviewed 15 December 2014 for a stay in November 2014

When we imagined a Hawaiian vacation, we didn't want to stay in a high rise like the tired old Hilton in Waikiki, where you get nickle-and-dimed to death and where so many tour groups stay that the staff doesn't care about individual guests. We had a very bad experience with the Hilton and didn't want that yet again.

Unfortunately, there are no really sophisticated resorts on Oahu. Like the Hilton, they all are huge and tack on so many extra charges that the cost of your stay can double what you originally paid.

Looking around for an alternative accommodation was time-consuming. Nothing seemed to be just right.

Then we came across the reviews for Kitty's Open Palm Plantation. They were all, every one of them, completely enthusiastic. So we decided to take a chance.

We are so glad we did. We wanted a place for two weeks that would provide a comfortable place to stay for two weeks and this place was perfect. The room, which was really like a large efficiency, had a very comfortable king bed, a clean bathroom with excellent shower (hot water is nearly endless and comes from solar -- very cool), a kitchenette that allowed us to make our own meals, and a living area with couch and television that had great cable and also allowed us to use Netflix.

Out the main door of the little place was a wonderful deck where we grilled great steaks on some nights, hotdogs on others. There is a little table on the deck if you want to eat outside.

Outside the slider is a view of the little farm -- complete with a wonderful dog and a horse who liked to come over evenings for a bite of carrot or an apple, whatever we were offering for the evening treat.

The room had quiet air conditioning, a fridge large enough to store two weeks worth of groceries, and an outside hose so we could wash the sand off before we stepped into our room, with its soft carpeting.

This is a rural experience. There are lots of small properties in the area, and lots and lots of roosters who like to proclaim their presence at all hours. If you don't like the country, this may not be the place for you, but we couldn't have been happier. Our stay was about as different from the awful Hilton Waikiki as we could possibly get. And Kitty was exceptionally accommodating. She's always on the property if you need anything, but never intrusive. And she keeps you well-supplied with clean towels for the beach, as well as for the bath. Best of all -- unlike the Hilton -- there are never any cost add-ons.

To get to a beach is a short drive of ten or fifteen minutes. But we found a beach that is rated as one of the best in the world, and when we experienced it, we decided that was not an exaggeration. Wow! What a place to swim and snorkel.

There are plenty of fully stocked grocery stores also only a few minutes drive into town, including several organic food places.

Oahu is small, and we found we could easily drive anywhere we wanted to go for the day, and easily get back in time to make dinner. If you want to "put down roots" for a couple of weeks and don't fancy a cookie-cutter chain hotel where the staff couldn't care less about you as a customer, this may be the place for you!

“Awesome - highly recommended”

We choose Open Palm Plantation based on the previous tripadvisor reviews. They are very accurate and you can book with confidence based on the reviews and photos. We stayed for 2 weeks, traveling with an 8 and 4 year old.

Pros:

- beautiful location. As in the pictures. Amazing gardens, at the foot of a dramatic mountain range. Very peaceful. Living in Shanghai, this was exactly what we needed to unwind. It was like coming home to a private homestead every day, which was very special.
- Kitty was great - there when you needed her, invisible when you didn't. Very friendly and made us all feel very welcome. Booking was easy and kitty checks her emails and responds very quickly.
- on the best side of Oahu. Very easy10 minute drive to Kailua and lanikai beach. 5 minutes to Waimanalo beach, close to the sea park (dolphin show etc) and Hamauna bay (snorkeling etc). Sooooo much nicer than Waikiki. Indeed, talk to any local and you get immediate respect for staying in Waimanalo and away from Waikiki. We went to Waikiki 3 or 4 times and it was an easy (and lovely) 25-30 minute drive.
- the wing of the house which we rented was very spacious and comfortable. Traveling with kids, we find having the luxury of space with separate rooms and a kitchen is much, much better than a hotel room (or even 2 hotel rooms which is the more realistic option for a long stay).
- reasonably priced.

Cons:

- the chickens next door are early risers so maybe not ideal for very light sleepers. We solved this issue after the first night by shutting the windows when we slept and were fine after that.
- a dishwasher would have been great.
- the interior is looking a bit dated.
- not a true 2 bedder as the king bed is in the living room. Wasn't an issue for us at all but perhaps not great with older kids who want to stay up and watch tv after the parents go to sleep.

To summarize, it very much depends what you are looking for your holiday. It's not 5 star luxury and you don't have the facilities of a big hotel. But it is beautiful, peaceful, very comfortable and for us anyway the perfect place to unwind and feel unplugged from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We highly recommend it and will be back for sure.

“Why stay in Waikiki when the Open Palm Plantation is available?”
Reviewed 27 July 2014 for a stay in July 2014

My wife and I grew up on Oahu. We needed a place to stay because there wasn't room in our siblings' homes. Waikiki was out of the question. Too much traffic, congestion and stress. We lucked upon the Open Palm Plantation ("OPP") on-line. What a find. Kitty, the owner, is a sweetheart. She made us feel welcome and took care of the one problem we had (which wasn't her fault) promptly. We also loved Hunter, Kitty's Golden Retriever, who greeted us daily. The OPP would be our first and only choice of vacation rentals if we need a place when we return. It's a peaceful oasis on the best side of Oahu (the Windward side).

The condo/mini-house we stayed in was perfect. It had a kitchen, fridge, deck, outdoor bbq and phenomenal views of the Koolaus. It's easy to get to, just off Kalanianaole Highway in Waimanalo; and it's close to Makapuu (a great body surfing beach) and Sea Life Park. You wake up to the sound of roosters and look out your window to see Kitty's horse. Kailua is a short five to ten minute drive, Waimanalo beach park is close by, and at the end of the day, you return to a secluded farm-like estate.

We also loved the convenience of being able to do laundry daily and going home with two suit cases of clean clothes. NOTE TO SAVVY TRAVELERS: you can always drive in to Waikiki. Do yourself a favor and stay at the OPP.

Liked best: The gorgeous surroundings and the peaceful nature of the place.
Liked least: There was a huge storm, so the electricity went out. Kitty, however, fixed the problem promptly.

“Beautiful grounds”

The grounds of Open Palm Plantation are without a doubt beautiful. Our unit included a separate patio area complete with gas grill. Me, my husband & two young adult children stayed at Open Palms for six nights. I was expecting to have 2 separate bedrooms but in actuality the second bedroom was a bedroom/family room combination with no privacy between the two areas. The separate bedroom has two twin beds & a king bed in the combined bedroom/family room area. There are a set of pocket doors which separate the kitchen from this area. Kitty was a friendly & gracious hostess and went out of her way to be accommodating. The small kitchen area consist of toaster oven, microwave, twin hot plate, toaster & large refrigerator with a freezer & small table. Washer & dryer located outside and free for your use. There is plenty of beach supplies available, chairs, beach umbrellas, etc. Hunter, the family dog is great but can get over stimulated & way too friendly!

We were Oahu for a nephew's wedding that was held in the Waikiki area. This place was so peaceful we invited local and visiting family members to come for a bar-b-q. They were surprised that there is such a relaxing and beautiful place to stay on Oahu.
