My friend and I went to the old fort merely for a scenic photograph. What we got was a cultural experience thanks to Big John. This tall, mohawked Chamorro man welcomed us to Umatac with fruit that grows in the village. We drank coconut milk straight from the coconut, ate the flesh, had fresh bananas and starfruit. We thanked him for our afternoon snack and gave him a tip for his generosity. Then we were in for a big surprise... a carabao ride! His water buffalo took us up to the fort for a one-of-a-kind view of Utumac. This gentle beast (Betsy) gave us each a scenic ride that we will never forget.
