Outrigger Guam Beach Resort

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 18 July 2013

We visited Guam earlier this month and, overall, enjoyed a most pleasant week-long stay at the Outrigger. After a late-night arrival on the island, characterised by the wash of tropical warmth and humidity upon clearing the air-conditioned airport, hotel check-in (and subsequently, check-out) was effected promptly and efficiently, although both processes occurring in the wee hours may well have been a contributory factor. The resort is centrally located in the island’s capital on the mid-west coast, within easy walking reach of the normally sought-after tourist services and facilities, as well as being positioned on the edge of a typical Pacific lagoon. Initial entry to our room exposed a decidedly musty interior, common with closed up spaces in the tropics, quickly dispelled after opening a window – the hotel might consider a daily airing of unoccupied rooms, although logistics may well make this impractical. First impressions, not to detract from our overall experience, did point to a somewhat time-worn establishment as reflected in our room rating. Staff throughout were friendly and attentive, although we did detect a sense of indifference from a few in the breakfast restaurant, probably a result we ventured of the daily repetitious grind a facility such as this unavoidably exposes its workforce to. Our numerous and refreshing excursions into the sandy/rocky bottomed lagoon found a water depth of around three metres at high tide, and the ability to wade out to the exposed reef a couple of hundred metres distant at low tide if that is your desire (but I wouldn't get stuck out there with an incoming tide). Apart from the superb swimming pools, beach/leisure staff presided over a variety of services, accessories and fun equipment for the many more inclined to test the hot sun and warm waters of the Philippine Sea, my own particular favourite being the refreshment bar situated nearby the water’s edge, offering icy cold lubrication and tasty snack food. Sadly, it was here that we encountered the sole instance of disappointment during our stay – foul-mouthed, out-of-uniform, young imbibing American servicemen, openly cussing in a family environment just as they might back in the barracks. Not at all clever by any means. There can be absolutely no objection to such young men letting off steam but they should be far more sensitive in their choice of venue for such activity. Hotel management, apart from their own commanding officers, need to focus on this issue as a matter of real importance in the public interest. Later, our exploratory road journey around the island saw lush jungle, then the volcanic nature of the southern landscape, evidence of the old Spanish heritage, various World War II battlegrounds and quiet associated war memorials and finally the laid back way of life practiced by the indigenous population, all very interesting and worthwhile facets of our Guam visit. It was notable that, although various journals warn the unaccustomed of sometimes dangerous road conditions, we found the sealed highway (although no autobahn) to be quite adequate and safe, apart from occasional patchwork repair and a couple of speeding drivers racing in the opposite direction. Generally, following an active day and a colourful sunset, the hotel lounge replete with live music provided a relaxing place to sit back, enjoy a nightcap or three and plan the next day’s schedule. No hesitation in recommending the Outrigger Resort for reasonably medium-priced accommodation, hovering around four-star in a good location, certain to be my choice in any return visit.

Room Tip: The higher up the better, for the view.

Location: 5*. Hotel location is extremely convenient especially when traveling with kids. Convenience stores, eating places are all over the area. The hotel offers an excellent location for shopping and the red trolley stop is just steps outside the property.

Service: 4*. We were initially given a room at a different level from the rest of our family members. Upon knowing our predicament, she did her best to find us a room on the same floor. Housekeeping was quite responsive to our needs, like additional toiletries and towels.

Facilities: 4*. Nice pool, the kids loved the slide in particular. Life guard was on duty and very helpful when he knew we were with several kids.

Rooms: 3*. The room we stayed was clean. Sheets were changed daily and the cleaning lady vacuumed the carpet. But the rooms needs to be updated - sink handles and flange were rusty; parts of the paint in walls were peeling off.

When hotel hopping during my stay in Guam and I must say this truly is an excellent place to stay if you plan on staying in the water most of the time. The beach is pretty much the same for all hotels in Guam, rocky so the pool becomes a much more enjoyable place to hang out by. This pool is the best one I've ever been in. Beautiful, as plants provide some shade over portions of it, and it has a fun slide for the kids if you got any. Location of the hotel is at the heart of the duty free shopping so if that's your thing it's literally across the hotel. Was stuck in Guam a long time, did Hilton, Westin, Hayatt, Nikko, and Sheraton, I preferred this one to all of them.

Before I made the reservation I checked the reviews on Tripadvisor. I thought it was interesting that the Hotel never really respond to the reviews. I booked it anyway because of the location. Turned out that the location was just perfect for me. It's by the beach but closed to the nice stores and restaurant. There's a mishap in airport pick up but it was taken care of. Thanks to Rodel. They upgraded me to the Ocean View which was nice. Wifi was free and worked well in my room. If I go back, I'lll definitely stay here again.

If your looking for a family friendly hotel this is the one, we were there at the end of March and it was packed to the rafters with kids. They need an adult only pool area!!!! The Outrigger has some very nice pools and a hot tub but they were packed with kids.
If you want to use the Beach lounge chairs they charge $27.00 - $40.00 this is a complete RIPP- OFF!!!!!! I asked the hotel front desk and they said it was a separate company that was not a part of the Outrigger chain but when I paid the beach guy for the beach chair rental he had the Outrigger guest list with all the guests names and room numbers on it, there is no way the hotel would let a private company take over its beach!!!! Its unacceptable to charge $250.00 per night and then charge your customers for the beach chairs, this is one of the reasons why the pool area is packed.
The rooms were nice but very well used. The Dinner buffets we very nice and the front desk staff were very helpful too. The location of the Outrigger Guam is couldn't be better. While in Guam make sure you try the local barbeque dishes they are very nice.

This hovered between 3 & 4 stars until I went and looked at the other hotels to see where I should stay next time. And the Outrigger is the place to be. It's the best spot on the Bay, with the best beach and beach amenities. The lobby is pretty and vibrant, live music at night, even early in the week. The rooms were nice and perfectly clean, but very very dated. Even the beds weren't the latest standard, but they worked. This place clearly caters to Asian tourists; I didn't see any Americans here, only at the Marriott & the Westin. But the breakfast was good and you just can't beat the proximity to the shopping - the best is right there at Pleasure Island! I saw a few reviews that said staff wasn't great, but I would give them 5 stars - everyone was extremely pleasant and worked hard to provide a good experience. Am looking forward to when the new hotel next door is completed - it'll be nice to have something crisp and new to try.

Room Tip: If you're not on a tour package (many of the Asian travelers), check out the packages for specia...

Eat brunch there only. Nice selection of food fresh vegetables. The grilled fish was good. Service was prompt but they could smile a little. My server looked like she was under stress. Overall it was with the price $35 with 20% mil discount
