My husband and I went on the Sunset Kayak tour, which was from 4:30pm to 6:30 pm. The cost was $37 per person. Our tour guide was great. He was knowledgeable and funny. After putting on gear and getting instructions, we didn't hit the water until a little after 5pm. The combination of the lavender sky as the sun was setting against a backdrop of mountains was breathtaking. The water was crisp, clean, and fresh.....so clear that you could see right through it. The tour was about 3.5 miles there and 3.5 miles back, with a full moon lighting the water on our return. It was beautiful, romantic, and adventurous. The only drawback was having to keep up with tour guide and the group. We had to keep paddling the whole way, and there wasn't much time to relax and take everything in.

“Easy access to water and very stable kayaks”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2011

They provided everything from footwear, water jackets, kayak skirts and gloves (if you wanted them). Dave gave a terrific safety briefing and taught us how to sit in the kayak to keep it stable and not have our legs fall asleep. We had a small group with good paddlers so he took us further than normal. We spotted some seals and different birds, and just had a great afternoon. It was the highlight of our vacation.

“Best kayaking experience to date!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2011

We booked the Porcupine Adventure for a Saturday afternoon, our final of three kayaking trips during our ten day stay in Maine. We were a little nervous that Aquaterra would be more "touristy" than we would want to deal with. But all our fears were calmed once we met our guide, Jeff.

We were lucky enough to be the only ones signed up for the tour that afternoon, so our trip turned into a 3.5 hour adventure led by this great guide. The wildlife we saw was excellent - bald eagles, seals, porpoises and a lot of birds. We paddled a total of eight miles through crazy wind and high seas and had the time of our lives!

I have no doubt that even if we hadn't been the only ones on our trip, it still would have been a great experience. Beginners should know that Aquaterra did the most thorough safety instruction we've ever had on a tour, including practicing how to get out of the boat if it tips over.

Kudos to them and Jeff for a great end to our vacation!

“Great Kayaking trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 August 2011

Went with my apprehensive wife on a 2-hour kayaking trip earlier this week. Was a beautiful day and we took advantage of the weather for some activities - ran across Aquaterra down by where all the excursions set off at the end of town and very glad we did.

Our guide was Jeff - very knowlegable, outgoing and personable, exactly what you would want for a guide/instructor. Actually saw him later that eveing at an open mike night where we got to jam a bit as well.

Spent almost the first hour getting suited up, instructions on equipment and procedures, getting in the kayaks, etc.. Then, out to the water.

Had a great time going to and around some of the nearby islands - spotted a bald eagle and a few porpoises. Jeff was very patient and made sure we all stayed together and knew how to avoid boat traffic! Kayaking is great exercise, but not something you need to be in great shape for in order to have fun with.

Class A operation and pretty reasonably priced for something you can brag about back home! Instructors are patient, knowledgable and funny - will make sure you have a great experience. Thinking about buying my own kayak for some of the local lakes

“A great experience with a knowledgable guide”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2011

We decided upon Aquaterra Adventures after visiting 2 other sea kayaking tour companies in Bar Harbor. I was afraid to kayak in a cold ocean so we were looking for a shorter tour with a great safety record. Aquaterra was the only company with 2 hr tours and availability for the day and was recommended by one of the other companies with longer tours.

Our guide was Andy, a local 6th grade science teacher. Our tour group consisted of only 5 members and her. She was incredibly knowledgable and patient with each of us, all beginner kayakers. It took around 30 minutes to explain how to kayak properly and to make sure we were equipped safely. As we toured, she explained the geological history of the area and answered the questions that each of us had.

The tour was not incredibly extensive, a reasonable paddle along the coast of Bar Harbor Island and around Sheep Porcupine Island. We saw many birds and a bald eagle's nest but no other wildlife. Andy explained that she had seen harbor seals that week, but of course, the spotting of these animals always up to chance. If you are interested in marine animal spotting, she explained that the longer tours on the opposite side of the island provided more opportunity.

Overall, it was a great experience. Andy helped alleviate my fears that began the experience and helped us create a wonderful vacation memory for around $75 for the two of us!
