Finding bugs in your sheets is not the way to start a vacation. 3 couples stayed here overnight. We were catching an early morning ferry to Nova Scotia. The rooms themselves were basically OK, appearing renovated in the recent past. The location was good for catching the ferry. But when one couple pulled back the bedding to jump into bed for the night, there was first one then another bug skittering across the top sheet. Repulsive. Another couple said there were holes in their sheets. The management lost our reservation for a return overnight so we stayed somewhere else when we returned.

After reading a couple of the other reviews, I'm glad we decided to go here anyway.

We stayed in Cottage 1 and while a review stated that this was the most undesired of the rooms, we found it to be the best. The layout was just right and the space fantastic. Perhaps it was because of the time of the year, but the noise from the road was minimal. We have never been to Maine before and because of the welcoming environment they created, we are sure to return. Also, these cottages were not as close to the road as other places we saw.
While we never got to meet the owners, we had pretty much everything we needed. The cottages are so close to downtown Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and Ellsworth shopping center that we felt we were in the perfect location without all of the traffic associated with locations of this sort.
While others stated that their rooms were a mess, ours was impeccable. There were no evidence of critters or mold. Our bathroom was very clean. We brought our own towels, but they did provide a nice bathmat. Although we had to live out of our suitcases, they did have some shelving and hangers on the wall and so much space we were able to put an extra large dog crate in the room without it getting in the way. The only improvements they could make are more comfortable beds and better TVs.
I also cooked in the room every morning and found the kitchen very nice for the space allotted. This is not a big time hotel and it's not a Motel 6 on the side of the road. They have the best accommodations at a great value. Their quaint cottages fit the bill perfectly without ever feeling like we were roughing it.
We're looking forward to our next trip out.

We traveled to Bar Harbor for one night and booked with Hanscoms because it was the cheaper of the available places to stay. Upon arrival, it took us several hours to get our internet connected and when we did, it only gave us a couple of bars. The bed was very uncomfortable...and when I went to try to fix it, I found behind the bed a lot of dirt and dead mosquitos just laying around. After killing several bugs in the cottage and falling asleep, one would think the night would go well from there. Think again!! At 2am my husband and I heard some rattling and turned the light on. There was a mouse in the garbage can. It ran out of the can, across the room and finally went into one of the cuboards. We left the cottage that night and drove back home because the thought of having a mouse beside our bed was a little disturbing. I called the next morning and the owner laughed and said "I don't think there is much to do but I will get back to you". They still haven't called back and probably won't.

Awful hotel! This place is a dump. They say they have newly remodeled rooms, well we stayed there August 09 and our room was a mess. The bed was so hard and uncomfortable that we had to ask for extra blankets to try and pad the bed, and when all they gave us were these warn out old blankets, I went to LL Bean and bought sleeping bags so we could sleep. The rug in the room was a mess, had stains all over it, big stains. The bathroom had mold under the tiles and all around the toilet and shower area. The shower was broken so you had to adjust the handle just right to get it to go to the shower and not the tub, and even when it did, it had zero water pressure. The tub also didn't drain, so after taking a long shower because the water pressure wouldn't wash the shampoo from my hair, I was standing in a foot of filthy water. It also leaked out so the bathroom floor was all wet after each shower. They give you a flimsy paper bath mat, which did next to nothing to soak up the water, and we only got a bath mat 3 days out of 8. The towels were gross, and paper thin, looked like they had been used for 20 years or so. I had to use my beach towels all week. There was also a birds nest in the wall of the bathroom so we had to listen to birds chirping and moving around in the walls every morning. The cottage had zero decorations, was too small and didn't even have a dresser, just two bed side tables and a small table with two bar stools. There isn't even a closet, we had to live out of our suitcases on the floor all week. 3 different days when we came home from being out, our door was unlocked after the maid had been in. On the website they tell you that a Hanscom family member is always on site to help you, and that is not true. When we tried to complain, all we could find was the maid who told us she had already poured a bunch of drano down our tub and didn't know why it wasn't draining. When we arrived at the hotel to check in, about 8:30 pm, the woman at the counter said she was just going to leave us a note that our room was open, and that she was leaving for the night. When she gave us the key, I was looking at brochures of the area and she said that we could come back in the morning if we wanted brochures that she was closing up for the night. A young couple came to our door one evening as we had just gotten back about 11PM, they had been locked out of their cottage and didn't have any way to get a hold of the hotel owners because they didn't have a phone. There was a post it note on the office door to call if you had a problem, but if you are locked out without your phone, how are they supposed to get help. We lent them our cell phone and they called both numbers and left messages because no one answered and then they went back to sit outside thier cottage and hope that someone showed up! Every night there was a post it note on the office door with a note for a new arrival saying to let yourself in and get in touch with them in the morning. Not a very welcoming attitude when you expect to be able to talk to an owner at any time. Notes saying things like " went out for dinner" Also the cooking utensils are a mess, the pans were all scraped up and had flakes of teflon falling off of them, and we had to use the same dish cloth all week to clean our dishes, and no, they don't do the dishes for you. Anyway, Bar Harbor is a beautiful town to visit, so do yourself a favor and find a nice place to stay.

We stayed at Hanscom's for three nights. There were several positives and a couple of negatives. The location was excellent. We were two miles from the entrance to Acadia and four from Bar Harbor. The cabin was a nice size and decorated in a cute and cozy way. It was clean, and the bed was comfortable. The cabins were set in very pleasant surroundings. On the negative side, the first morning there, we made coffee. After that, the coffee pot was never emptied, and we received no more cups. The most serious negative, however, was that the entire cabin was so damp that our maps, books, etc. curled up, and the sheets even felt damp. The cabin smelled of mildew whenever we entered. I don't worry about the small stuff, but that was a big problem for me. I don't know if all the cabins were like that, but it really ruined what would have been a cozy, comfortable stay. I would not likely stay there again because of that.
