Description: The Black Friar Inn and Pub is a hidden gem; once you find it we guarantee you will be back! Our three story building is mostly constructed from materials salvaged from the mansions that burned in the great fire of 1947. In season, our highly rated restaurant serves breakfast and dinner daily. Breakfasts at the Friar are hearty and healthy. Portions are generous and everything is made from scratch right here at the Black Friar Inn. Open to the public, breakfast is served from 7:30am to 10:00am. Each afternoon the Friar’s Pub opens at 4pm for happy hour, offering $5 house wine and drafts (Maine selections always on tap) and the company is fine. Settle in after a day in the park in an old-fashioned British pub atmosphere. A full line of spirits, cocktails, wines and craft brews are served. Shareable plates and pub fare, dinner offerings include scotch eggs, crab cakes, Charcuterie board and much more. Dinner service begins at 5pm and blackboard specials change weekly.

Went in with my girlfriend and some close friends for dinner and had an amazing time and meal. We got there without a reservation and despite being sat behind a large party the service was accommodating, quick and efficient. We started off with generously portioned cocktails and appetizers. The poutine and scotch eggs and crab cakes were an ideal start. Entrees were just as good. The scallop tacos will have us back again. They had a hanger steak on special and it was the best Ive ever had. I couldnt stop even though I was full. This place is a hidden gem and the new owners (this year) are killing it in my opinion. Keep it up Deb, Steve, and crew!

I feel that a dinner at this price level should impress me with more than just the food. This -place did not. After reading reviews and checking websites, we were disappointed that only a bar menu and a few entrée specials were available. Although we had a reservation, when we arrived, we were instructed to pick any available table in the bar area. Sadly, I was under the impression that this was a restaurant with restaurant seating and menu. The food was good with the exception of the small plate of crabcakes which were extremely salty. The chowder was thick and full of nice ingredients. The mussels were served in a large portion with French Fries. All food was hot. The seating area in the bar was also very hot,. If air conditioning was available, it was not obvious. Parking is available adjacent to the restaurant. I would like so much to love this place, but this trip will probably be our last.

Hello Disappointed,

To begin with I feel like I should introduce who we are...We are the Black Friar Inn B&B and Black Friar Pub. We are a pub with a pub menu, shareable and small plates. We also have 4 rotating weekly entrees--Local Fish, Steak, Duck and A Vegetarian/Vegan. I am pleased to hear that except for the crab cakes you enjoyed the food you ordered on our menu. The chowder is made in house so we are also very pleased you enjoyed it! I do realize you had called ahead for a reservation but since it was a Monday night and we were not fully booked, a specific table was not reserved for you allowing you to sit wherever you wanted to. Most people appreciate the freedom of choosing their own table, especially in our pub since the architecture is quirky and you get to sit and see interesting points of views. We have limited A/C because this is Coastal Maine and we always seem to have a nice breeze coming in our patio door, you did visit us on a humid day so yes it was warmer in the pub that normal but rest assured most days there is a great breeze flowing through the pub.

The Friar’s Pub is a little off Main Street, but worth the visit. It is housed in an Inn and the room we dined in only had our table for 6 and 2 other tables. It felt like we were in our own home and someone else was doing the cooking. The service was good and the food was better. Do your self a favor and pay them a visit.

It was a nice place to eat dinner. Was within very short walking distance of our B & B, the Holland Inn of Bar Harbor.

This is a special little place that is close to becoming great. The beer and wine selections were great, and the ambiance was laid back and comfortable. Food was good - we had the lobster tacos - and the presentation and amount of lobster was WOW. The corn salsa just missed something - it needed a pinch that was missing. We added salt and pepper to fill the gap, but this dish would be GREAT with a little tweak. I thought the chowder was off the hook good!

One other suggestion - seal those service windows to the bar area as the kitchen music clashes with the restaurant music. Hey the kitchen team needs their tunes, but remember why you’re here.

Thank Bill And Donna ... S
