“Outstanding B&B!”
Reviewed 26 June 2013

We would like to thank innkeepers Gary and Heidi for an excellent stay! The Atlantean Cottage is perhaps hands down the most beautiful B&B we have ever stay in during our time in New England.

The house: historic, beautiful, charming, and spotless.

Location: although centrally located in downtown Bar Harbor, it is tucked away in a side street making it perfectly quiet for your stay. A short walk away from local restaurants. There is also a nice wine shop across the way.

Amenities: Comfortable beds, spacious bedrooms, ecofriendly and conscientious amenities. Charming sitting area available for reading or lounging. Elegant silverware available for your use (in lieu of dinner one night, we had a impromptu wine/cheese picnic on their patio instead). There is also a refrigerator and microwave available. Free wi-fi.

Food: Incredible made to order gourmet breakfasts. Not only delicious and creative but also super filling that you could perhaps even skip lunch! We appreciated their use of local and organic produce. Coffee, tea, and small snacks (i.e. pretzels, popcorn) available all day. There were also special afternoon baked treats - a nice welcome after a day outdoors.

Innkeepers Gary & Heidi - super incredibly kind people, hospitable and always looking for a way to make your stay special and well taken care of.

I highly recommend this place for your next trip to Bar Harbor!

We stayed at The Atlantean for three nights and it is by far the best B&B we have ever stayed at. The inn (stunning architecture by Fred Savage), our room (Tallyrand), Heidi, Gary and Finn (what a sweetie) were all amazing. This place offers everything: romantic setting, location, privacy, conversation (if you want it), the yummiest breakfasts, comfort and parking (you will appreciate this). I can see why everyone rates it a five.

This was my husband and my second trip to Bar Harbor, and our first stay at the Atlantean - we stayed at a different B&B the first time, but it was booked for the dates we wanted for this trip. That ended up being a good thing, as we got to experience another great Bar Harbor B&B!

The Atlantean is tucked away on a quiet street just off of Main Street (another reviewer noted the noisy motel across the street from the B&B, but I didn't find the location to be noisy at all - granted, our windows did not face the street, and we visited just before the summer season ramped up). So many fun shops are just around the corner, or as part of a nice stroll around town. I was pretty unimpressed with the quality of the restaurants in Bar Harbor during my first stay, but my husband and I had better luck this time, especially at Eden and McKay's Public House, both of which are seriously minutes away from the B&B on foot.

Speaking of food - the breakfasts! Super tasty! Each breakfast begins with a fresh fruit-based appetizer, which is followed by a fantastic main course. We visited for three days, and the main courses we were served were apple kafluti (not sure about the spelling of that - it was kind of like a dutch baby pancake full of apples!), crustless vegetable quiche, and french toast (I believe it was pineapple upside-down french toast, in fact). With coffee/tea, orange juice, and fresh-baked muffins on the self-service sideboard.

We stayed in the Chatwold room, which was perfect - large room with a comfy bed and two armchairs by the fire, which gave the room a cozy feel. The bathroom is totally new (renovated this past spring, I believe) and has a pretty fancy stall shower with five shower heads, if I remember correctly! When we were being shown the room, I joked about using the fireplace in June, but I ended up eating my words, as day two of our trip ended up being rainy and pretty dismal - the fireplace was put to good use, to cozy up the room even further, that evening!

Speaking of that rainy day, I should mention our wonderful hosts, Heidi and Gary. Like all good B&B proprietors, they are available when you need them but are never intrusive. They were very helpful on that rainy day, giving us advice on lots of indoor things to do in the area. On our first (thankfully non-rainy) day, they recommended a specific hike in Acadia, which we thoroughly enjoyed. And Gary was very helpful in his restaurant recommendations, as we were somewhat soured on the area's offerings from our first visit a few years ago (he recommended Eden, as well as our giving McKay's a second change).

In short, all you need to know are these three things: comfy room, tasty food, friendly owners!

Room Tip: We stayed in Chatwold, which has a brand-new bathroom. It's also a good choice if you're con...

We loved our stay here. It is excellently located within walking distance of great restaurants and the square. Rooms were beautifully decorated, extremely clean, quiet and comfortable. Ours had a GREAT closet, with sloping roof and loads of space to hang clothes, with a dresser and space for our suitcases, so they weren't cluttering up our room.

The breakfasts were AWESOME!! I had to find a recipe for blueberry cream cheese coffeecake when I got home, and have yet to come up to Gary's standard of excellence!! The Asparagus Quiche was luscious, and the frittata was delicious. The melon balls in vanilla mint simple syrup were to die for!! Good thing we weren't there for longer - would have to triple my time hiking on Mt. Desert Island!!

Can't wait to return - hope Finn remembers us!! : )

Room Tip: The smallest room is really a good size for two.

It took a lot for us to venture from our old stand by B&B visited several times prior, but it was time for a change. We knew we were headed to the right place when we read a bit about the owners and immediately admired their leap from the technical grind...hey if the could escape permanently, than we could for the weekend and know we were in familiar hands before getting there. Lovely rooms, relaxing garden, amazing breakfast, greatest sheets anywhere. Best yet--a butler's pantry that doesn't stop yielding goodies!

Our most recent stay at the Atlantean Cottage marks our fourth trip to this wonderful bed and breakfast. Every time, it gets better. The rooms are outstanding - immaculate, comfortable, and stylish. This time we stayed in the Chatwold and the newly renovated bathroom was amazing. Each room we stay in becomes our new favorite.

The next best thing about the Atlantean is the location. It is perfect! So close to everything; we love walking through the village and stopping in to different shops and restaurants.

We have stayed in many places, but the Atlantean Cottage will be the place we will always return. It feels like home to us.

We loved this b&b. It was one of the nicest we have stayed in and we would certainly stay there again if we return to Bar Harbor.

Rooms- my husband and I stayed in the Edgemere Room and my mother-in-law stayed in the Tallyrand Room. Both were comfortable, spacious and beautifully decorated. The bed was so comfortable and the sheets were so nice I had to ask the host about them! The bathrooms are nicely updated and spacious, including eco-friendly toiletries. Our bathroom had a heated floor which would have been great- but we didn't need to use it in August.

Hosts- they were very personable and gave us great recommendations for restaurants and activities.

Location- located on a quiet side street, a very short walk to downtown. I thought the location was perfect- far enough away from the hustle and bustle but close enough to easily walk to restaurants, shops and the harbor.

Food- although we are not vegetarians, the breakfasts were delicious and creative and we did not feel like we were missing anything by not having meat. And the cookies were addictive.
