“Great local spot in town”
Reviewed 15 September 2012

Our family has been to Bar Harbor quite a bit. We love to visit in the fall and spring. So for the last few years we have stayed outside of the downtown area. Mostly for peace and quiet, but it also seemed like the places in town were too expensive.

We found this hotel at a great rate and it was I would say about average. The pool in the back was nice for the kids and the loby was clean. Staff was helpful.

Its missing that final star because the continental breakfast was below average.

Room Tip: Do not choose a room on the main floor. Busy and loud.

Had a very pleasant 2 night stay this summer at the Bar Harbor Grand.

Check in was very quick and smooth. Stayed in a two bedroom unit on the last floor (4th). Accommodation was really great. Spacious, impeccably clean and in very good conditions. Main bedroom had two queen beds and an ample corner with a table and two chairs. Second bedroom had an additional queen bed. Bathroom was spacious too and had coffee maker. Room offered free wi-fi though connection was quite sketchy. Only minor complaint is that windows were not very sound-proofed and you could hear every single car or motorcycle passing at night, but Bar Harbour, though very crowded in summer, is not a metropolis and late at night it gets very quite anyway, so not a major issue for us. Maybe on the first or second floor this could be more of a nuisance.

Breakfast buffet was also quite good and offered very good selection. And it is included in the room price! In addition to the usual items they also have waffles. They are pre-made, you just heat them up and eat them. They were quite delicious I must say. Hotel has an outdoor pool but no restaurant. They have a very useful book with the menus of almost every restaurant in town in the lobby which you can consult before deciding where to dine.

The location is also very good, 2 minutes from the village green from where you can catch the free Acadia shuttle buses and everything is at walking distance : shops, restaurant, visitor info. Parking is also free and there is plenty of space.

To sum it up, it was a very pleasant stay and would definitely choose this hotel again should I visit Acadia again. Also the price for a two-bedroom suite was quite good taking into consideration that Bar Harbor is quite expensive in summer. Definitely good value for money.

I recently booked a two bedroom room with five friends. Right on the main drag, you are no more than five minutes from anything downtown. The staff was very accommodating as we had camped for two nights at the seawall campground and packed up for a 10:00am check out. We were dirty and ready to relax. Our check in was at 2:00 but the great staff let us up at 11:30, what a relief. The hotel was clean and quiet, it is very modern without any over the top fanfare. In my opinion you really get good value for such a tourist destination.

The continental breakfast is what you would expect for the price you pay. It is not as bad as some responses i have read, and is better than some that have cost me far more.

This hotel is a good value and worth a stay, however is not the type of place you would call a doorman for ice. I will return.

Our initial reception was very strange, we almost turned around and left. It was as though the grownups took off for the afternoon and left the kids in charge. It was quite an uncomfortable check-in. We felt as though we were walking them through the check-in process. Then when we got to our room we discovered that it was on the first floor, on the parking lot level in the back. No privacy. We couldn't open the curtains without having people looking in as they walked by to get to their cars, or to the pool, or as they drove past the room entering or leaving the parking lot. One fellow was sitting in his car with the car door open and smoking a cigar. The parking lot is at the room's floor level and immediately right out the window. Keeping the curtains shut while we changed or rested was the only option & it was miserable sitting in the dark. We asked to have our room changed to a higher floor and were told that we could do so the following night, but that the hotel was full for that night and there were no rooms available.

The following day, the desk staff and the housekeeping staff couldn't have been more accommodating. They moved our luggage up to a 4th floor room while we were out touring the island for the day. Much nicer... we could open the curtains and the windows! We also did not again run into the staff that had checked us in initially.

The only other very odd thing was the hotel's continental breakfast. The selection was very limited and a very commercial low end assortment of breads and pastries. I've had much, much better at very cheap low end motels. There were also some odd ways of presenting their breakfast. For instance the yogurt choice was one flavor, served in a large bowl for everyone to spoon out of. There was also a large bowl of hard boiled eggs for people to fish their eggs out of. There was only one flavor of jam. You don't see those things anymore. Needless to say we then went somewhere else and got breakfast & coffee.

Otherwise the location is good. No view, but it is on the upper end of the main downtown area. There are a couple of fun restaurants just steps away. The free shuttle leaves from the green only a block and a half away. The pool was in the back parking lot... not a scenic spot for lounging in your suit, and not a terribly big pool, but there were several families with their young children happily splashing around.

The rooms were clean and ample sized, the bathrooms were clean. The decor was a bit gaudy.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor. Do not get a ground floor. The back of the hotel has the afternoon sun. The...

If quiet comfortable rooms make a hotel grand then this hotel is that. If you want huge ballrooms and a fancy entrance maybe not.

Excellent beds made for a great sleep. Perfect location just far enough away from the crowds to be perfect.

This hotel is located at the end of Main St - close to all the restaurants and shops in town. You can park your car and walk all over town. The rooms were very nice - clean and good size. They have an outdoor pool which many families were using - we did not (we forgot our bathing suits). We did not have the continental breakfast - we walked down Main St to Jeannie's Great Maine Breakfast for the best blueberry pancakes around. The hotel is located close to the entry to Acadia National Park and the Loop Drive around the park. One night we enjoyed sitting in the rocker chairs on the front porch reading and people watching before we walked to dinner. They have a big parking lot - which helps since parking in town is limited.
I would stay here again on my next visit to Bar Harbor and would recommend it to friends.

We had a lovely stay in Bar Harbor. The Bar Harbor Grand Hotel is located in town and within walking distance of all Bar Harbor restaurants and shops. For our family of 4 (two adults and 2 teenage children) we booked a room with 2 queen beds; the room was sizable and the beds were comfortable. Staff was great and the complimentary continental breakfast was a nice offer. Highly recommended!
