“BEST Value for Budget-Minded This Close to Bar Harbor”
Reviewed 26 June 2013

There is no other place this close to ANP Visitor Center and Bar Harbor that a family of four can lodge for a week under $700. (2013 June pricing) Our family has returned to Acadia each year for 20 years - sometimes more than once a year. We have camped in 5 (FIVE) of the area's campgrounds and rented cabins, some with more "features" than others.
I write this review because I am quite surprised by some of the previous reviewers' experiences, particularly with the staff and with some of the more rustic cabins. For the price, we were delighted to discover that daily housekeeping service was included - clean towels, trash removal. Some rentals at this price require you to bring your own linens. We stay in Cabin #4 - our third time in that cabin. The fireplace and king size bed (comfortable!), 2nd bedroom w/ 2 doubles are the best features of this cabin. We brought a portable charcoal grill for outdoor cooking, though the gas stove worked fine. (oven, however, did not seem to heat up as previously observed).
As for the staff: Recently during our stay the outside temperature hit an unprecedented 85 degrees with no relief at night. With no A/C in the cabin, I went to the office to ask about a fan. The staff went out of their way to find a stand fan for us. They were also very helpful in suggesting places for firewood. Housekeeping staff were friendly and we found the place clean and ready for our visit, with extra pillows and blankets if needed. While the online reservation system is quite handy, the owners require half downpayment mailed to them. The website is clear about this policy and if you want a GREAT experience, communication is key! There are a variety of cabins for different tastes.
If you are looking for a good "base camp" at 2 steps above camping and are realistic about what to expect for your $ then look NO further! Bonus: walking distance to Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf. The ONLY downside is the proximity to Rt 3 - the main roadway to Bar Harbor from the mainland. But this is the only thing that keeps me from giving this property 5 out of 5.
Highly recommend for anyone looking for more comfort and convenience than camping can offer with charm and personality.

We spent a week in June 2013 at Hinckley's. We could have be happier with our experience. The location was perfect! A few miles from both Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, plus Mainely Meat (BBQ) and a glorious ice cream shop both right down the road! We stayed in one of the updated cabins (#3) and it was perfect for my husband.myself, and our 9 month old son. It was impeccably clean... i had no issue at all with having our son, who started crawling while on the trip, move all over the cabin on the floors (and this is not something i would have allowed in say a hotel). That right there shows how spotless our cabin was! plus someone came by every day to sweep off our outside deck and take out our trash and bring new towels. the pool on site was well kept, as well as the rest of the property. We look forward to coming back again, and will be staying at Hinckley's!

Room Tip: If you are not traveling with pets I highly recommend getting one of the newer places!

My husband, 8 month old daughter and I stayed in cabin 14 last week for our vacation to Bar Harbor. We LOVED it! The cabin was newly renovated and very clean! There was plenty of space for the 3 of us, including my daughter's pack-and-play. We were there 4 days and every day our cabin was cleaned and our towels replaced. I liked having the full kitchen - refrigerator, sink and stove, as well as dishes and silverware to use while we were there. The owners were very nice upon check-in and gave us a little booklet with a map of Bar Harbor and recommendations for where to eat. The location is great, only about 7 minutes from downtown Bar Harbor, and 3 minutes from the Acadia National Park entrance. I would absolutely stay here again. The price was great as well. Thank you so much Hinckley's for a great place to stay!

Hinckley cottages offered an affordable, comfortable, and private homebase from which to explore Acadia and Mt. Desert Island. The staff was very courteous and friendly. I would definitely return to this family run business.

My husband and I stayed in Cabin 4. We checked in on a Monday around 3:30 pm. The staff obviously was not expecting us even though we had made the reservations a month before. The bedding was left sitting in bags on the chairs along with a bag of towels. A water bowl from previous guests with pets was left sitting on the kitchen floor. The carpets and laminate floors were covered in dog hair. Every faucet leaked. We had packed food to cook to save money except the oven never got hot even after being turned to 600 degrees for 15 minutes. We asked for dining suggestions, but weren't given a clear answer as to where would be a good place to eat. The cabin had very small heaters that had to constantly be left on to maintain heat. We chose cabin 4 because it had a fireplace, only to find out that we had to purchase wood to burn in it... I think not... and it is against Maine state law to transport your own firewood across state lines. We did like the location to Bar Harbor and Acadia NP, but there were many other cottages/hotels that are in the same area and they probably are a much better quality for your money.

This was our first visit to Hinckleys and we loved it! We stayed in Cabin 19, a pet-friendly cabin, as we were bringing our 2 dogs along with us on vacation. It was roomy enough for us to set up the dog crates along one side and still have ample space to move around comfortably. The king-sized bed was quite comfy and we had a fireplace in our room. The bathroom was a little dated, but still very clean. We had a full kitchen which included a small dining area, stocked with dishes, utensils, pots, pans, stove with oven, small fridge, toaster, and coffee maker. Only thing missing was a microwave. We had to make our own bed everyday but the towels were changed out daily. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable, especially with their suggestions of places to dine....great places where the locals dine. The cabins are located just a few minutes away from Bar Harbor town and also the entrance to Acadia National Park. We will definitely be returning to Hinckley's!

Room Tip: Not all of the cottages are pet-friendly and not all of them have fireplaces. Check each cottage...

We recently stayed at Hinckley's for 4 nights in cabin 16. This is the largest of the cabins and you could tell it was recently renovated. Very nice kitchen, stools with counter, living room, 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. The owner didn't give us much information except here's the key, but were friendly. The rooms are nice, although the configuration is odd. Bath is not connected to one room and requires a walk out into the hallway kitchen area to get to. Not too convenient when taking a shower. 2nd bedroom has french doors into the living room but only sheers on the door windows which doesn't allow for much privacy. But, we enjoyed our stay. Cabin was very, very clean. Kitchen is very nice but lacks a microwave. It is fully stocked with dishes, pots/pans, etc.. if one desires to cook. The only real issue we had was NO hot water for showers in the morning. Basically, one person got a hot shower and that was it. But, other than that, a great stay.
