A cooler than normal October day that we were prepared for dressing in layers and we were lucky enough to see 5 Humpback Whales of which they were able to identify 4 of them from the data base. We had a great time and seeing these gentle giants up close was a real treat. A must do when on the eastern Seaboard. The marine biologist from the local college gave a nice narrative about the local ecosystem which added to the experience.

We took the Puffin and Whale Watch Tours in September 2013 and August 1997. During both tours we saw whales. The more recent trip featured multiple finback and minki whales. The finbacks are very large and we saw the crest of their backs with a spout of vapor through the water as they exhale. The minki whales are far smaller and we saw them bouncing through the waves. During our earlier journey we saw multiple humpback whales. The humpbacks were very dramatic and we have lasting memories as side by side whale surfaced in harmony and smacked their tales against the water.

Our tour guide was a graduate of the College of the Atlantic and was competent and informative about the Gulf of Maine. We saw Desert Island, its mountains and coves, from an off shore perspective. The cruise ships in the area were impressive. Dolphins flanks our ship while at sea. The view of Mount Desert Rock Lighthouse, its inhabited remoteness and the abundance of seals on its shores was memorable.

A great tour when the weather is favorable. This is meant to be savored in a "mellow" state of mind.

What could make for a better outing, no?

In town for a day, so a whale watching we will go! A perfect October day - sunshine and a hundred of my closest friends onboard.

Since the season was coming to an end, the captain told us that we would need to go a bit further out to find some whales. We passed a couple lighthouses; one of which the beach was the sun worshiping area for tons of seals. As we approached, some off into the water they went, and all you could see was bobbing seal heads... The captain cut the engines way back and in closer we went to the banks. We hung out there for awhile, and then onward we went.

Another few miles, and "whale" port side. A few humpbacks, and a few minkes. The group of whales went from side to side, offering a show to each side of the vessel - spectacular site.... the arch, and then down with the tales for all to see. The humpbacks put on a pretty good show, rolling, waving with their flippers, then down again.

The naturalist on board was great. She was a wealth of info, and her experiences were fascinating to listen to.

A truly great day, thanks to the weather, the crew and of course, the star performers.

Just a thought to all those folks that post so negatively on whale watches when a whale is not seen. When a lottery ticket is purchased, are you guaranteed a win? OMG - no one can predict anything - so, if you HAVE to see a whale, go to sea world. On a whale watch, just sit back and take in anything you come across - birds, seals, porpoises, take in the salt air, the knowledge of the crew on board, the rocking of the vessel... I would almost guarantee that the crew wants to find a whale more than you, so cut them some slack.

Whenever you go whale watching, you are relying on luck, and you may end up seeing nothing. Sadly, this particular company, rather than accepting this, decide to rattle on about sea birds, get ever more desperate "if you look in the water you might see a jellyfish" and for the crowning glory, returned to port an hour late, causing later plans to be disrupted.

We had hoped to do the whale watch cruise but the waters were too rough. We found this to be a nice 2 hour cruise exploring the harbor and areas south of Bar Harbor. We got close-up to a lighthouse, saw 5 bald eagles, and quite a few seals in addition to the interesting islands and rock formations. We also got to see parts of the Acadia National Park which was closed during our visit along with a number of beautiful homes. The young woman who did the narration during the tour was very knowledgeable and did a wonderful job. Definitely worth the money!
