Black Friar Inn and Pub

Friar Tom is a really nice, laid back kind of guy. He obviously works hard. He cooks a delicious breakfast that each of us enjoyed. The quality of the food was just what we were looking for. Chef Don prepared dinner for us one night. My husband said he made the best scallops he's had out. My steak was tender, juicy and cooked the way I requested. My step daughter and son in law loved their dinners.

We hung out a couple times in the bar. Wendy makes some good drinks. My hubby is not much of a B&B kind of guy. His one requiremt was that the place has a bar and I didn't think such a place existed. Tom's on to something!

The location is good-just a short walk from the main strip.

There are lots of places to stay in Bar Harbor. If we make it back, we are booking here.

Five of us were on a motorcycle tour and found this great inn that allowed us to stay for two nights on a 3 night holiday weekend. No other area inn was as accommodating. I knew we were good when my girlfriend opened the door to our room and exclaimed, "It's lovely." The immediate area is quiet but close to town. The pub is quaint and comfortable. The inn keeper (friartom) is welcoming and laid back. The chef is well worth the visit. We had the top deck porch to ourselves the first evening after pulling in. And, Wendy kept the good spirit of our evening alive throughout dinner. This will be one of our stops again next year....

Room Tip: some are larger than others. Go by the desriptions on the website, they are spot on.

Great rooms in a quiet location just a few blocks from Main St. and the Bar Harbor waterfront. Friendly staff gave "spot on" recommendations for our visit. The Pub was the real find....great Maine craft beers on tap, a bartender that really knew martinis, and the best burgers in town. Chef Don also plates some wonderful seafood. The rosemary skewered scallops and lobster thermidor were artfully presented and truly delectable. We'll be back soon.

All the staff is very friendly and helpful. Rooms 1 & 4 are very nice and with the bonus balcony and coppola it is truly unique. It's nice that it's slightly off the beaten path. Wendy's blueberry martini was delish and Chef Don has a good menu with awesome food from asian chicken wings to risotto with scallops.

My wife and I stayed for 5 nights in 2 different rooms and we couldn't have had a better time. The rooms are clean and spacious with en-suite bathrooms, comfortable queen size beds, AC, free wifi, fresh linens, etc. The room was cleaned by 130 each day. The staff are very nice and very accommodating

There is a nice sitting area on the 1st floor, with a TV in the basement area that can be used by guests (we stayed during the Olympics). The breakfasts are great, there are 8 choices (my favorite: 2 blueberry pancakes the size of a 45 record with sausage and fruit, included in the price? Sign me up!)

The Black Friar Pub, also on the 1st floor, which seats about 16 people max is a great little find. 2 of the 3 best dinners I had were in the Pub just down the flight of stairs from my room! There is a little bar included there (hand-built by the proprietor, nicely done!) where we spent a few of our nights, chatting with other guests and the staff and having a pint or 2.

The inn is within 3 blocks or less of basically everything Bar Harbor has to offer.

We'll be going back very soon!

Cute, clean and friendly inn. Within walking distance to everything in downtown Bar Harbor. The included breakfast every morning was wonderful. We ate dinner @ the pub one night and it was one of our favorites! We loved room# 4....comfy bed and our daughter loved the spiral staircase leading up to the sitting room! Stay here.. You'll love it!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Black Friar Inn and Pub is a hidden gem; once you find it we guarantee you will be back! Our three story building is mostly constructed from materials salvaged from the mansions that burned in the great fire of 1947. All of the finishing work in the Blackfriar was once part of the time when the steamboats greeted our shores and Bar Harbor was called Eden. Although there doesn't seem to be any new ghost here, you will occasionally feel residual energy coming from all around you. Especially if it's nighttime. And you're here. By yourself. Don't be frightened off, when you walk in our friendly and super accommodating staff is there to greet you, get you settled in and feeling at home. Chef Don does a superb job in our cozy kitchen whether you feel like a burger or a fine bottle of wine with a perfectly cooked steak. Jenny, Michelle, Taylor and Brittany are very capable barmaids with dynamite personalities and lots of specialty drinks to try. Fryer Tom is the heart of the Friar, the owner and innkeeper, he is laid back and has a wonderful hands-on approach to ownership. We are happy family here at the Blackfriar so come by, take a tour, grab a beer and let us make you feel like part of it! ... more   less
