Our stay in BH started with frustration at a 5star resort nearby. After 3 days we moved to BH Inn to avoid the dysfunctional other place. We had a great time and will return. No dysfunction,no hidden charges,no next door construction.

Our room was unbelievable! What a great view! Free continental breakfast too! We had 2 Queens and a cot in the Oceanfront Lodge. Perfect! This old hotel is great!

We had a 3 night reservation, but escaped in 2. The room #230 we were given was unfit for human habitation. Directly above a huge, noisy kitchen vent , the stench was revolting. A large wall fan warned occupants "this must remain on at all times!"The whole Main Building is ancient - exposed plumbing, dim lighting, dirty old furnishings, sagging bed with 2 flat pillows- and hallways were strewn with bins of dirty laundry. The plastic cups in the prefab bathroom were a gracious touch. I entered the room and proclaimed it "Disgusting" but no other room was available. While the other motel - style buildings were newer, the rooms looked cramped and had the same crummy furnishing. The pool had dirty water, broken chaises, and remnants of people's lunch on the tables. It 's obvious the pool is neglected. This place is way past it's heyday(if it ever had one) and gets away with murder due to its prime location. The breakfast was OK, and a reasonable employee overrode a threatened 1/2 day charge for leaving early. I cannot say enough bad things about this dump. I feel nauseous just at the thought of it.

BHI, Innkeeper at Bar Harbor Inn, responded to this reviewResponded 27 July 2011

The Inn is a very unique property with many different room types. Our rooms range from our traditional inn style rooms to deluxe suite style rooms. In all we have over 30 room types on the property. Our furnishings in the rooms also vary by room type from traditional inn style to contemporary. We renovate our rooms on a rotating basis. This past winter we renovated the entire first floor rooms in the Ocean Front Lodge and the previous winter we renovated the second floor rooms with 2 queen beds in the Ocean Front Lodge. We are continually making improvements to the property.

The original portion of the Main Inn was designed by architect William Randolph Emerson in 1887 as the “Mount Desert Reading Room”, a social club with the avowed purpose of promoting "literary and social culture." The Reading Room became an "oasis" of culture for the likes of the Vanderbilts, Pulitzers, and Morgans and it became the center of social activities during the summers before World War I. In 1910 even President Taft was entertained here during his three-day stay in Bar Harbor.

When the terrible fire of 1947 raged throughout Bar Harbor, the American Red Cross used the building to give assistance to many who were burned out. After the fire, Bar Harbor was left without a single hotel to attract visitors back to the area.

A group of townspeople joined in 1950 to develop the Hotel Bar Harbor with an initial 40-room wing, followed in 1960 by a 20-room motel along the shorepath. In 1987 the name was changed to the Bar Harbor Inn, and a series of renovations began. The first was replacing the 20 room motel with the 64 room Ocean Front Lodge, then a few years later the addition of the 38 room Newport Building. In 1999 the 43 room wing was taken down to the framing and reconstructed into beautiful new rooms, most of which have private balconies overlooking the harbor. The second floor suite style rooms have a third floor loft area with private balconies that overlook the harbor.

The room this guest was in is in the original Main Inn. There are only 8 rooms in this section, all very different in shape and location. Some of these rooms have harbor views and some have grounds views. This particular room is located near the kitchen and we do clearly explain the location when reservations are made for this room

The “exposed plumbing” the guest referred to is the sprinkler system pipes that are in the Main Inn. It is fairly common for older buildings of this style to have the sprinkler system pipes in view and not hidden under a false ceiling of some kind.

Regarding the bins of laundry, we do have laundry bins in the hallway as the housekeeping department cleans the rooms. The bins are all removed once housekeeping has finished for the day, usually be 2:30pm.

During the weekend this guest stayed we did have some problems with the lounge chairs at the pool. We have a high quality chaise lounge called Telescope Casual Gardinela which has served us very well for many years. Unfortunately this year they began to break during the season and we found ourselves needing to quickly replace them. We have added some additional chairs and have ordered the same lounge chair we had before as a replacement which should arrive soon. The pool is monitored and taken care of on a regular basis.

It is unfortunate that we seemed to have failed this guest. It is our desire that every guest enjoys their stay at the Inn, clearly that was not the case this time. I truly regret that we were not able to turn around their experience to a positive one while they were here…

This was our 3rd year returning to The Bar Harbor Inn. It gets better every year. Service is impeccable, Room is Very Clean and everyone makes you feel like a treasured guest. Planning to return again next year. The "Reading Room " restaurant is a gem. We especially love the piano music during dinner time. The landscaping with all of the beautiful flower beds is a feast for one's eyes.
