Did the day trip a couple of years ago. Wonderful to see everything in daylight. The night tour is awesome - you do get to see different things and it was pretty cool to hear the cell doors open and close which is only done on the night tour.

Very popular trip! If you go to San Francisco Alcatraz is a must visit place to see. Make sure you book your trip in advance. We booked a couple of weeks before we left UK and had to take the trip that was available on the one day out of four that we were in SF. Quick trip on ferry and then you can stay all day on Alcatraz! As other people have said the audio tour is excellent and if you follow the directions nothing is missed. I took a video camera and filmed as I walked around and it was weird watching the footage because it it so quiet. The prison was very busy but because everyone has headphones on and they are listening to the audio tour hardly anyone is talking!
There is a vehicle to take people up the hill if needed because there is a steep walk up to the main part of the prison.

We toured Alcatraz with our four kids (4,5,7,7) and we ALL had a blast! You wear headphones and take a self-guided, audio tour. I must admit that I was a little nervous handing four young kids headphones to a history lesson but it was SO interesting and it even kept their interest! It was narrated by former prisoners and prison guards. We all were so into the stories of the prison that I don't think my loud kiddos even made a peep! We booked our tickets in advance and got to the pier about an 45 minutes before it departed. It was packed on the ferry but inside the prison on the tour, it didn't seem so busy. The gift shop was really cool too! You can walk into some of the cells including some solitary confinement cells. I thought about how scary and fun the night tours must be! It took us about 3 hours to ride the ferry and complete the tour and shop in the gift shop and get back to San Francisco. The Ferry ride was cool and you can see the Golden Gate Bridge on your journey. Our daughter is OBSESSED with the Golden Gate Bridge so that was really cool. The views are really awesome of the city too. Its really cold on the water and the island so BE SURE to wear a jacket. We added this on to our road trip just because my husband was slightly interested but I am SO glad we went because it ended up being one of the highlights of the whole trip (road trip through California). We might go back someday and do a night tour! If you're on the fence about touring Alcatraz, just buy those tickets you wont regret it!

Booked well in advance, this is a must, this trip is fully booked. Nice ferry ride across and informative, you can stay all day if you want. Must do the Audio Tour, only used for 29 years, Erie walking around listening to ex prison officers and prisoners, plenty of picture moments, the Rock is a gradual slope to the top so can be tiring. There is refreshments and toilets, nice gardens and wild life.

Tours of Alcatraz sell out weeks ahead of time, so ensure you plan your visit in advanced. We took the first boat at 8:45am. First we took the audio cell house tour, which walks you through the area in which inmates were housed. It provides a comprehensive overview of the workings of the prison and stories from both ex-prisoners and prison officers. We were glad we did this first as later on it became very busy giving you restricted view of the exhibits and information boards. Throughout the day there are free ranger lead tours, we took the “escapes” tour and found out many interesting facts about the escape attempts. Also take the opportunity to wander round the grounds, see the photography exhibit in one of the outbuildings and watch the orientation video. Allow a minimum of 2 hours for your visit.
