Visited the 'Gorgeous' exhibition. Rooms were spacious, staff were very knowledgable and helpful. Only downside is that occasionally the curation was dubious though can't speak for all the exhibitions. The museum is also near City Hall and is a lovely setting.

This world-class museum offers free headphones in most languages, as well as free tours and talks. Start on the 3rd floor for a chronological presentation of more than 6,000 years of Asian culture & art. Exhibits are laid out in an easy-to-follow progression, making it impossible to get lost. Allow at least 1-2 hours for each floor. My favorite exhibit was the unusual netsuke toggles which were used to attach medicine bottles and other small items to the inside of kimonos since they do not have pockets. If you need a break, the Café Asia on the 1st floor serves fresh pan-Asian food (I had the shrimp tempura and cucumber salad for $12). The first Sunday of every month is free and Thursday evenings after 5pm are only $5.

Luckily for us, we were able to catch the exhibit, Gorgeous, before it closed. It was a creative, thought provoking exhibit exploring what is and has been considered "gorgeous" across time and cultures. It was very smartly curated. The museum as a whole was the perfect size for us. In two hours, you can see everything. It also has a very nice cafe and gift shop.

In the U.S., "Asian" basically means East Asian and Indian, with very minor representation of the rich culture of central Asia and Asia Minor. That's very unfortunate, and this museum is no exception. While having perhaps the best East Asian collection, and in general being a very high-quality museum, it lacks Central Asian and Asian Minor collections, especially Turkic and Arabic, and whatever it has, just like it's LA counterpart LACMA, presents through a very Iranocentric, Persiancentric way.

We go here every time we are in San Francisco. We don't even care how much it costs to park in the Civic Lot across the street. (Answer: lots and lots.) Even with the featured exhibit isn't something we care about, we know we will get lost for hours just getting to the featured exhibit because we are distracted by everything else in the permanent collection. An exotic cafe on the first floor for when you get arted out, and then you can go back refreshed for another couple of hours. Simply one of the best collections of Asian Art and some of the best curators in the country.
