Owner description: Famous bookstore founded and still owned by Beat Generation poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

I love old bookstores and this one is absolutely wonderful. Loads of books, somewhat cramped and chairs to sit and read. The staff is helpful and prices are reasonable.

A fantastic range of books with a lovely atmosphere. Makes you feel as if you are going back in time. Good place for those who love poetry.

Wonderful bookstore! Books you won't find other places. Downstairs, exceptional non-fiction, main floor fiction and lots of it, upstairs poetry. We went several times and sent home a lot of books. Loved it!

Appropriately located across the street from the Beat Museum, the City Lights Bookstore is a mecca for lovers of the Beat Generation of writers. The store is overflowing with literary classics and you could easily spend an entire day there just browsing, before you get your wallet out. There are areas where you can sit and browse/read before you buy and the whole place is crammed with books on all kinds of topics, not just the Beat works. For Kerouac and Ginsberg fans, the top floor is the place to be, where the Beat Generation writers' works fill the shelves. I defy you to leave empty-handed. Even though I already had the paperback and the eBook, I still bought the original scroll version of "On The Road". It's that kind of place!

What's not to like? An upstairs that is simply the Poetry Room, with a Poet's Chair. But, that couldbe mere window dressing in another shop - here it's true, the selection of poetry books is superb, their buyer must have an excellent eye.

Downstairs, heir categorisation is somewhat unusual - they have extensive shelves of translated fiction- these are labelled European fiction. Any authors writing in English as their native tongue don't appear in these shelves - so don't look for Irish/British authors in European fiction. But, the local SF angle is well covered, their translated and general fiction on offer is truly impressive.

They are not aiming to supply every book you will see in the bestseller list - they seem to be pulling some of what they consider the best and most interesting choices (covering both their back list and new fiction) so the more standard airport fodder won't be littered about. Their staff recommendations offer some new and not so new books that will give readers a few new names to consider.

They run lots of events, though not much in end July/August when I visited. It's open until midnight every night, and customers abound. But there are chairs everywhere and signs welcoming you to sits and read.

A fantastic place to dream for a few hours or days. Temptation central for bookaholics.
