We found out about this by accident. It's free and well worth a visit if you have an interest in the history of the cable cars. Conveniently situated very close to a cable car stop.

“Very interesting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014

We decided to tour this museum because we were early into San Francisco and needed something to do. The museum is very interesting and the best part of it is the actual workings of the cable cars. There are the actual wheels and cables that operate the cable cars. It was fascinating to see how such simple technology can run such an elaborate system of cable cars. The only drawback to visiting this museum was parking. We ended up parking about 12 blocks from the museum in a public parking garage because there weren't any places to park on the street. So if you don't mind walking quite a ways, it's well worth the trip.

“Small but very interesting to see all the workings.”

We went in between cable car rides, and found it fascinating to see how the whole system works. Enjoyed the cable car rides, system very slow and over crowded which makes a bit wearing, however the California route was better.

“Small but worth the time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014 via mobile

The museum has interesting displays about the history of public transportation in the city. I was most fascinated by the mechanical design displays and the ability to watch the system at work. Unfortunately the wheels that redirect the cables below the street level are badly illuminated and therefore hard to see.
