Since we had the all day pass for $22 we decided to stop at this museum this time. It was worth the stop. Lots of history and mechanics about the cable cars and the San Fran Fire of 1906. Plus there are great restrooms here for a break! It was a bit of a wait to catch the next cable car, but we soaked up the city for a little and enjoyed ourselves.

The museum is interesting but it will only take you about 30 minutes to see everything. There are old cable cars and you can see the actual wheels turning while visiting.

What an interesting museum. Well it is a museum, but it actually houses all the working parts of the actual cable cars. I mean you are looking at the cable that runs the cars around town. Lots of history and information on how the cars actually move around the city. Lots of interesting history on San Francisco too.
You can get off at a cable stop right by the museum, however, most cars running to the wharfs are full and can’t pick you up after your museum visit. After several full cars went by we decided to take the car heading back down Powell and get off and back on at our hotel. Also all day tickets are available for riding and that works nicely for hopping on and off. Otherwise you pay $7 each time. The all day ticket also applies to the bus line too.

This was my second time visiting and I still loved it. That this is the operating heart of the famous cable cars really wows me. It’s amazing to see these machines that date from the end of the 19th century still operating the cable cars. They have a video about the system that was made in 1984. All the clothes and hair styles take me back to my younger days. Even little kids will like this.
Extra bonus is that it’s free and along the cable car route.

This working museum gives you an appreciation for the engineering to put this together over 120 years ago. You get a full understanding of how the system works.
