Owner description: This electric neighborhood of 100,000 people is not to be missed, and it's not hard to find: listen for the clack of mahjongg tiles and nose out the salty spicy squid.

I went to Chinatown twice! It is so fun. You can buy anything under the sun. We ate in one restaurant there and it was delicious. You have to experience the oldest Chinatown in the country.

The Chinatown in San Francisco has many restaurants and there was a major earthquake last century. I went to the restaurant which is opposite the church that survived the earthquake

“I lived in China for 6 months, it really is like walking down a street in China”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

I was really surprised by how authentic the area was. Even down to the pink fabric shopping bags you get all over in China and to the buckets of live fish with the air hoses by the store fronts. We had lunch at a Dim Sum place, super authentic, then had a foot massage, it was way to rough, just like in China! : ) If you are in San Fran GO THERE! We took the trolley from the wharf then walked back, you will walk past Lombard street.

“Good area to celebrate Chinese New Years - and for dining all year round”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

Chinatown in San Francisco is nice to visit for dinner, shopping, and dim sum. The best time to visit this area is during Chinese New Years and see the Chinese New Years parade. This is a community where people live, so there are shops for food, etc. There is also the Chinese Historical Society and Museum.

We have attended excellent events there.

In the San Francisco Bay area, there is a large Asian community living throughout the area. For example, there is a Chinatown in Oakland and there is a large Asian community in Santa Clara Valley where there are many dim sum, Asian restaurants, and stores.

From a historical perspective San Francisco China town is the oldest starting around 1850; so its worth visiting for its cultural and historical areas as well.

If interested there are tours of Chinatown. Some focus on food tours.

Note: On the culinary front, I have found visiting the Chinese Fortune Cookie Factory visit fun to do.

“Worth a visit!”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

It is considered to be the largest China Town in US and is worth a visit!

The Dragon Gate is beautiful and welcomes one in traditional Chinese way though one needs to take Grant Ave to enter through the Dragon Gate.

The shops are by and large beautifully decorated and present strong Chinese flavour!

The souvenirs sold here are among the cheapest in San Francisco though at the end of the day there is nothing cheap in this city! Must check comparative prices in a few shops as there is difference too!

There are some nice places to eat as well!
