“Feels so homey!”
Reviewed 3 January 2014

This was our second stay at the Hotel Rex, first time in 2009, this time in June 2013. Obviously we remembered it fondly, as we didn't really consider staying anywhere else: it was just as good as we remembered and I felt instantly relaxed when I walked in the door off a long flight from Aus. Staff so friendly, welcoming and helpful, rooms really nice size (two double beds) and ours was nice and quiet at the back of the hotel. We stayed here either side of three days at Yosemite, and the hotel were more than happy to keep our big bags while we were gone so that we could travel light (via public transport) to the national park. They also helped us figure out how to get to the train at Emeryville by public transport in the early morning (great tip on the free shuttle between BART and Amtrak).

The hotel location is great: just away from the slight insanity of Union Square, but close enough to walk to Chinatown, the bay and easily accessible to public transport to/from the airport and for getting around the city and neighbourhoods.

Thanks so much to the staff at the Hotel Rex, this is definitely my place to stay in San Francisco!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel have no view, but are nice and quiet and you can open your window for...

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights so we could attend a New Year's Eve party near Union Square. The location is perfect for nightlife and shopping, the hotel room was spotlessly clean, nicely decorated, and very comfortable. We were treated very well by the front desk staff. We will definitely stay here again when we're in the city.

We spent five nights at the Rex over Christmas, and we were really pleased with our stay. Got a very good deal, where we did not end up paying more than about 100 USD per night for a large twin room, in a property just a block from Union Square! We had some concerns before arriving at the hotel, but really could not find anything we did not like once we got there. Well, the elevator was very slow at times, but it has already been pointed out by other contributors, so no need to dwell on that. We will be back for sure!!!

Very good location just off Union Square. the night we arrived we were in a room on the front and as the hotel was full, they couldn't move us. It was noisy but not as bad as we thought. However, when we went down the next day, we were told without having to ask that we could move rooms and that if we left our things in our room, they would arrange for them to be moved!

The hotel was also nice and lively with a wine hour and a great atmosphere. I sat in the bar talking to the locals while my wife got ready and was told of a great local resturant which was fantastic.

A great little hotel and I would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Have a room away from the front as they can be noisy.

Join the JDV group to get all the best rates for these boutique hotels. The staff was prompt and accommodating even when I couldn't work the the TV control on Christmas Eve after 5:p.m. The staff was there. Evening wine reception in the library is a nice compliment to the dinner ahead. Call for valet at least one half hour ahead of when you want to leave or you won't be happy with the wait, but the coffee is good.

Room Tip: Some rooms look over a garden.

Was on a solo business trip and booked in here for a week. Friendly welcome, made sure i had a map of the local area and I was all set. Room was clean and quiet - no view as such from the window (it 'looked' onto a very narrow alleyway and very little light got in!), but was a good side. Arguably room was a little tired, but had plenty of character (as does the hotel throughout) and they run various events during the week in hotel bar and restaurant, so plenty to do.
very handy for city center amenities (a few minutes walk from Union Square and the shops etc. on Market Street).

This is really a great small hotel in a ideal location of the city. It has a fine library bar, simplistic decor and is pet friendly. Everyone was quite friendly and wine is offered in a relaxing atmosphere. They got it all right. Loads of great food and nightlife all within in walking distance.
Highly recommeded for the rate and I will return for sure when in the city.
