room was small but comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful, getting our car took almost 40 minutes so plan ahead ans ask for your car before you get out of your room. The restaurant is great. tray it.

I was also reluctant to book a room at this hotel because of this mixed reviews, but I was wrong. Being first time visitors to San Francisco, I decided that I needed to be downtown for easy access to everything I'd need to see and I was not disappointed. Every morning when I departed I was greeted at the front desk in a very personable way. Mary and Frank were exceptionally helpful and friendly. The attached restaurant offers a free wine glass every evening but unfortunately I found myself so immersed in the city I only made it there 2 nights out of the 6 nights I was at the hotel. Central to everything, I found myself exploring every aspect of the city...through Chinatown, North Beach, up Hyde Street and down to South Beach, Market Street and the Mission District. Small(er) type rooms but large closets in comparison. We had a 3rd person with us in a pull-out for 3 nights and it wasn't that overcrowded for a sleeping area. Shopping would be a plus, but I didn't partake.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 7th floor. Obviously, the higher you are the less noise from the street.

We stayed at the Andrews Hotel for 4 nights on a recent vacation. We were skeptical because of the numerous reviews about the size of the room. Yes, the bathroom is small, but when you stay in a property built in 1905, that is what is to be expected. The charm of the hotel, rooms and furnishings far outweighed the issues with a small bathroom. We would have given this a rating of 5 with the exception of 2 small issues. It was difficult to adjust the temperature (radiator heat), and unfortunately we stayed in San Francisco during a rainy, cold week. However, it was easy to turn on/off, but when on, it was very hot. So, no problem, we cracked a window occasionally when needed. We had issues with our key cards working when we first arrived, but the staff at the desk were very patient and helpful and quickly resolved the issue. The benefits: 1) Great, fresh continental breakfast on each floor. How great to walk 10 steps out of your room still in your jammies and get your coffee, juice and danish. 2) The front desk staff were absolutely wonderful. They gave us suggestions on restaurants (all great choices), sights to visit, ground transportation options, etc. 3) Free wine in the evening. They had choices of 3 great California wines to choose from each evening. Great way to start the evening as you are getting ready to head out for the evening. 4) Great location; only 2 blocks from Union Square where there is great shopping, restaurants, theatres, etc. 5) Close to cable car, "big red buses" for tours, bus stops. 6) Great Italian restaurant attached to the property! We weren't planning on eating on the property, but after reading the reviews decided to give it a try. What a treat! The food was extremely tasty, and the price was right as well! 7) Comfortable beds and bedding.
So, to sum it up ... if you are a snob and don't like small bathrooms, and a hotel with some age on it, don't stay here ... but if you are looking for a great charming historic hotel with an interesting history behind it, then this is a great value for the price in a great location!

Had we been prepared for the size of the room--and tiny bathroom--(a feature of this elderly and somewhat quaint hotel) and the noise (a relatively unavoidable feature of San Francisco), we would have embraced the atmosphere of this friendly hotel more quickly. It took us one night to adjust to the smallness of the room and the level of nighttime street noise. After that, we enjoyed our stay immensely. The staff are on duty at all hours, ready with advice about places to go and generous with little extras (we were able to take the New York Times, provided on the coffee table in the entry early each morning, with us after people had finished reading it, and complete the crossword puzzle in our room). We found each person at the desk to be friendly and well informed. It appears that they like their job, which for us speaks well of the establishment. The elevator is a pleasant experience--old and creaky, but very reliable and much nicer than more modern ones. Breakfast is provided early--in the hall of each of the different floors--and includes fruit--and good coffee. Comfortable bed; room key that works; amenities like ironing board and hairdryer that we might not have expected in this relatively small and modest hotel. The bathroom in our room was extremely small--the sink almost overhangs the toilet, and even a short person finds it confining--but the shower pressure is fantastic. Were we asked for advice for travelers, we would suggest that tall ones avoid the "08" rooms on any floor (because of the size). And were we asked for advice by the hotel, we would suggest that they consider offering breakfast in a sunlit room--perhaps impossible--but maybe arrangeable with the excellent restaurant right next door. Which restaurant, by the way, do not miss. Fino, which provided the hotel's offering of complimentary glass of wine each evening between 5 and 6:30, is a fabulous restaurant. We were astonished to get our check and find it so very reasonable for a truly outstanding meal. Pasta here is wonderful and there are some imaginative choices. Service is very attentive without being obsequious (which no matter how I write it looks wrong, so I will look it up but only after I finish this review). The location of the hotel is excellent--we were able to walk a lot of places and it is also convenient to plenty of public transportation (this seems to be the case everywhere in San Francisco, though). Our one minor quibble would be with the quality of the housekeeping. The cleaning staff certainly were thoughtful about not rushing us out of our room early in the morning, and they were not noisy in the hallways, but we found our room to be less well attended to than we would have liked. This is not to say that the hotel is not clean. We would happily stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: If you are tall, avoid the "08" rooms. 408 has a slightly wheezing floor--a bit startling...

This is a lovely, cute little hotel which far removed from the faceless mega-chains which could be in any city anywhere in the world. We had a queen room with a very comfy bed, an L shaped bathroom which was more than big enough for us and the only noise which disturbed us were the busy emergency services. We spent two weeks exploring the neighbourhoods of San Francisco and surrounding area and loved every minute. This meant we spent little time in the room but it was a haven every evening and I'd go back tomorrow.

Room Tip: I've no idea about the other rooms but 629 was perfect for my husband and I. It was located on...

Had been to Fino Restaurant before and enjoyed it. First time to stay at Hotel. Totally wonderful experience. Location is great very close to Union square. If you looking for glitz it ain't here. This is like staying at a hotel in a movie. Rooms are fine. Bath room smaller than was used to seeing. It just gave you a great confortable feeling. Continental breakfast in the hall of each floor is wonderful. The restaurant in the lobby is a huge plus. Great restaurant and great bar. This is the different experience you look for when you travel. Everyperson there was just a helpful to the limit. Will absolutely go back just for the experience.
