This is a place to stay if you (a) are a thief, (b) are at the mercy of a really bad travel agent, or (c) don't care about your belongings or any rest.

The system that innkeeper Mario seems to (really) think is fine, is to ask folks leaving to throw loose keeys in an unlocked and unguarded in any way door at the fronth when they left. When I checked in he didn't have a key, but called later to say to look for one by the phone. One was there, and as his accountant or staffmember of some sort finally thank god backed up, it was a key t o the front door only, not my rented room, from which several things were stolen. Again surprising given the inability to tell whether anothehr soul is in this 5 bedroom house, and presenting chances for, well, loss.

No frills staying here except the free maps that Mario is quick to hand out because he gets them free from other sources (AAA) and then attempts to make you feel like he really cares. What he really cares about is getting your money up front, so you don't find another place to stay while your in town. Do your homework because I did not. I won't make that mistake again. He charges whatever he thinks you'll be willing to pay. If your willing to overlook the pealing paint, warping woodwork, cheap linolium floor badly needing to be replaced, cleaning your own dishes, and the fact that the walls and floor haven't been cleaned since 1998, you probably will get your monies worth. Clearly, Mario is sitting on a gold mine of a house his mother probably died in, while he lives elsewhere, collecting up to $350 a day in rent from unsuspecting tourists while the house continues to fall into disrepair as he is too cheap to renovate anything including a dishwasher from 1970's. Kudos to Mario, you make a great slumlord!!

Greatest disappointment was the loss of potential... great location, not much competition.... needs a thorough ceiling to floor scrubbing, weeding out of all not-nice nonessentials including furniture, rugs and personal type items (partially used toiletries, food, which is just tip of items laying around), and a restaging.

Well... the place is in a great location and the owner/manager is a nice guy.

But

the place needs a rehab
needs a good cleaning - the drawers of the dresser in my room were dirty and dusty
under the bed is dusty as was under and behind the couch
the bathroom needs to remodled and modernized - moldy... and lack of towels
The wi-fi is a bit weak - sometimes hard to get on
The place is drafty - and the draft rattles the doors and windows - all day and night
sometimes a door would open and slam shut when the wind blew through the space
the pillows on the bed are thin and small

The place is shabby...

I recommend (to the owner), painting the the place - give the rooms some character - loose the cheap particle board furnishings
redo the bathroom
put a new rug in the space
and fix the doors and windows to cease the rattling!
It's worth the investment!

If you don't care about designer furniture or fancy interior design, this is the place for you. It is clean if a little bit worn. Perfect for me. Market Street is a couple blocks away. I will definitely stay here again. Mario was very accomodating. Keep up the good work.

Following a one night stay in another SF hotel, the Castillo Inn was a real luxury - your own front door and your own key so that you can come and go as you like. Mario is the most unassuming guy with a great personality and showed us round the city after collecting us from the car hire place. The information he gave us about the city was invaluable for our stay.
The Castillo Inn itself is nothing spectacular, but clean and comfortable. We were fortunate in that there was only one other guy staying there at the same time as us - it is a communal bathroom after all!!
Breakfast was not provided during our stay, only coffee and cakes. This was not, in my opinion, a problem, as it is so close to the Castro itself, there are places to eat, at any time of the day.
Ideally situated for the day and night-life of the city, I would recommend the Castillo and will definitely be back!
