I found my room quite nice and practical, however the walls of the rooms are so thin you can hear every conversation or TV show in the adjacent room. Just don't stay in this hotel if you ever intend to sleep!
The lobby and bar area are quite nice with a dark decor and a big fireplace. The service is good if impersonal. The location is very central, just minutes from Union Square.

It is not a usual hotel. Although I am not a fan of dark places, I loved this hotel. The lobby is cozy with nice furniture. It also has the perfect location.
The room was small but it is common in SF I guess.
The service was excellent from the receptionist to the bell man.

We dined once at the lobby lounge. The bone marrow was absolutely delicious. The steak was excellent too.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms away from the elevators. Not very sound proof.

Super comfy beds, accommodating staff (got upgraded), great deco in the lobby, hip, central. Found the room were tacky... Pick me up bar on ground floor- I didn't mind, but avoid if you like a quiet stay. Recommended if you get a good promo online.

Thank you so much for providing details of your business stay with us at Clift. We love to hear from our guests, both to know what they have enjoyed, as well as what areas might need our attention. It is wonderful that our Lobby is something that you valued the most of. Part of the charm of our historic hotel is the uniqueness of our accommodations, with no two exactly alike, just as no two guests are the same! We value your feedback and hope to welcome you back again so that you can take advantage of even more that we have offer.

The hotel is in a good location and the staff are friendly enough, but the rooms are a little dingy. Granted they are larger than average, but still could use a deep cleaning. There has to be better places to stay for the money.

It is truly disappointing to learn that your encounter was far from what we expect for our guests. A stay at our historic hotel can be such a magical experience and many of our guests enjoy so much of what we have to offer, including impeccable service. We truly apologize if that was not the case while you were here and will share your comments with our housekeeping team. Thank you for your feedback, we hope that the next time you are in San Francisco you will give us another chance to provide you with the type of experience you deserve.

My wife and I stayed at the Clift Hotel for three nights over the weekend on March 29, 2014. It was a mixed bag, but overall a good experience. We stayed in room 902.

First, the good. Great bed. We had three really good night sleeps. The room was quiet and so was the corridor.

We stayed in a Jr. Suite, which was nice… bed in an alcove, sitting area, etc.

Room service was prompt and the food good.

Everyone on staff was very nice and interested in being helpful and responsive.

The price, I think, wasn’t bad for San Francisco.

The so/so: there ‘s a very high “hipster” quotient here. There is a very popular bar in the lobby and it is quite the scene on Friday and Saturday night. Having said that, the buzz of the lobby didn't bleed into the upper floors which stayed quiet -- on the 9th floor where we were, you wouldn't have known there was a line out the door to get into the bar. Anyway, made me feel like an old foggy, but clearly the place has a following.

The problems/concerns: the bathrooms are small. Very hip design means that there is little counter space to put bath items on. For example, cabinet sink has practically no storage space. The tub needed re-glazing and was peeling it’s glazing, also slow to drain. The windows were filthy. The lighting is very “hip” which means it is a bit dark in the room (I would think you’d want a bright light in front of the closet, not a low one)… and some of the furniture was a bit tired.

The neighborhood is a mixed bad too. Close to things but a bit on the skeevie side -- but I guess that is still how the Tenderloin is.

However, overall, a good value, nice people, a good night’s sleep. I would stay here again… even if it makes me feel old and un-hip by comparison to all of the hipsters in the lobby!

Clift, closing in on our 100th Anniversary soon, is filled with so many years of amazing history and we are thrilled you enjoyed your stay. We value all of our guests, whether traveling business or just a couple on a romantic escape and it is great to know that the level of service you received was so positive. We are however disappointed that every aspect of you stay was not quite where it should be. Thank you so much for your review and recommendations, we would love to see you again.

My husband had a conference in San Francisco and I tagged a long for a quick holiday, and Clift Hotel suited both of us during our week there. It was within easy walking distance to Union Square and the main shopping district so I was happy, and my husband as able to walk to the conference centre and meet business clients downstairs in the funky bar for drinks.
We didn't eat any meals at the hotel but there were excellent cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance, and your main tourist attractions are easily accessible via walking, 10 min taxi or public transport.
Our trip coincided with spring break and these were several nights when our neighbours were very noisy and disruptive at a ridiculous hours of the morning, but once the front desk were advised security sorted it out straight away, which was really appreciated.
I used the hotel gym a few times and it had everything I needed, and concierge were very knowledgable and helpful when I asked them for recommendations on things to do/places to eat.
What stopped me scoring this hotel a 5 (excellent) was that as previous reviewers had mentioned, the bathrooms were a little dated, but the bed was comfy and the room was neat so as far as I'm concerned it had everything I needed.

We stayed here for a night, on a short stay-cation. We booked 2 rooms, one for our 2 kids. The rooms were small and the bathrooms were tiny. Not a surprise, pretty standard for the city. What did surprise me was the state of the room. Very tired, worn furniture in the room, the bench and chairs...they were finished in beige vinyl or leather, but they looked really dirty and best up. Both rooms had this worn look, not the shabby-chic or rustic look, more like a sagging modern look. It felt like a used shoe. The linens and the beds were comfortable. The amenities also nice, though no shower cap. One room had robes (why didn't they both have robes? They were the same price.) the other did not. And, there was a high pitch sound outside our room all night. Be warned, the parking is very expensive.

Room Tip: I wish I had some helpful advice, there must be SOME nice rooms in the hotel.
