I will admit that when I first walked in, I wondered what the heck was going on here. Due to the time of year (around Thanksgiving) every surface was covered in Christmas decorations - very old fashioned ones. It was...like nowhere I had ever stayed before. Then I decided to just go with it, and now I can't imagine staying in a cold, sterile hotel like a Marriott or Hilton when I can spend my time in San Fran at the Queen Ann! Mysister loved it at first sight, and we spent an afternoon exploring each floor for its individual treasures - LOL, I think other guests thought we were odd too.

The staff are extremely helpful, and more than happy to have a chat when it is quiet. The rooms are reasonably well-sized and the beds are comfortable. The bathroom was spotless and the water pressure great. Their tea, coffee, sherry and cookies in the afternoons are lovely, especially if you find yourself a chair by the fire and it's cold outside... The whole place smelled like hot apple pie and cinnamon - it made us hungry every time we walked in! Breakfast was basic, but certainly enough for our needs. They also provide a free car service within the city - and the driver is both friendly and professional.

Restaurants and buses are about two blocks down the hill (unfortunately that is UP hill to come back), and they go straight down to the Fisherman's Wharf area.

Our only issue was with the lift - it was verrrrry slow (we were on the top floor) and actually broke down with us in it! Luckily, it had jammed only a foot below the floor level, so we were able to get out and come down the stairs. The staff apologised even though it wasn't their fault (we might have pressed one too many buttons when we got in - it didn't like it). This was a tiny blip on an otherwise fantastic - and memorable - stay.

Think the movie, Somewhere in Time and you have a tiny glimpse of this Hotel, B&B. Loved the location, easy to find, inbetween Downtown and Japantown, not far from Golden Gate Park or Fishermans Wharf. I had a rental car, so not sure about other transport. Beautiful older building, large bedroom, Canopy bed. Cookies and Sherry in the afternoon. Parking in lot next door, seemed secure. Breakfast was minimal, toast, muffins, bagels, fruit, boiled eggs. But, who wants to waste calories on breakfast when SF food awaits. Didn't see other rooms, but thought ours was great. Mine faced inside court yard, but that was fine as there were no road noises. Free Wifi and it worked all the time. Thought about buying Spats to feel more comfortable, but ahh well.

I've stayed her twice and was pleased both times. The rooms are full of antiques, the concierge is friendly and the building is charming.

The free breakfast is adequate, but I cut them some slack after I receive my free sherry and cookies in the evening.

Period Queen Anne building quite well renovated, small & friendly b&b hotel, large rooms, very helpful concierge & desk staff, close to Fillmore, Japantown & transport but away from the tourist bustle. Tourist areas & shopping within easy reach. On a previous SF visit we stayed in a big name hotel in the Union Square area, but found this more to our liking. Some might consider the hotel too quaint, but it has strived for an atmosphere of the period whilst providing most modern comforts. We were there for the opera & found it most convenient. For long stays, the breakfasts lack imagination and variety. Room cost goes up on weekends. No facility for making a hot cup of tea or coffee (the room percolator got to medium hot only). Nice touch with free sherry & cookies in the late afternoon.

Has plenty of ambiance, great location and parking. We have stayed here often and love the antique feel. Rooms are nicely furnished and clean. Food is super~breakfast and afternoon tea are included. Staff this time seemed distracted and as if we were bothering them. In the past they have been very helpful and willing. This time they sat in the back and sighed heavily, reluctantly coming up to the front if you came to the front desk. Nevertheless it is a wonderful place and worth the stay.

Entirely clean, nice bath facility, good continental breakfast. Very accommodating staff. The room was cold (no trace of weatherstripping on windows) and remarkably dark. Conversely, if the room were bright, then the wonderful period decor would have been compromised.

This 1898 landmark is a great little piece of history. Once I slowed down for a second and got past the acquired taste for "everything modern," I treasured every moment in the place. Would definitely return. Period decor is faithfully American Victorian, which I instinctively view as being "fashionably seedy" - absolutely in keeping with tastes and practices of the times. The original woodwork, flooring, etc. make it all the better.

Another plus is that last-minute convention attendance offered a choice of rooms in the range of $1000/night elsewhere, whereas the Queen Anne retained its price point, for which they earn high marks in my book.

The Queen Anne hotel's building is more than 120 years old and began life as a girls school. The architecture is wonderful, and the antique furnishings in the drawing room and hallways are a perfect match.

Given that it's an old building, one should not expect perfection in some of the rooms. Our bathroom, for instance, had an odd/interesting placement of the towel racks and had obviously been refurbished to accommodate the lone electrical outlet (also kind of awkwardly placed). However, we didn't chose the hotel for "perfection," and the room was certainly comfortable and roomy enough for our family and all of our luggage. The beds were also quite comfortable, and it was generally very quiet. I should add that we had a Victorian room, which was on the more economical end, but they also offer Deluxe- and Superior-level guest rooms.

We absolutely loved the downstairs sitting areas and the afternoon tea, cookies and sherry. It's a great afternoon treat and a good time to take a break and sit by the fireplace, relax and possibly mingle/chat with the other guests (if you so desire).

The elevator looks a little like something out of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, mostly because it had a chandelier in it, but that made it all the more charming. For guests who need it, there's also a nice covered bench to sit on.

The continental breakfast wasn't spectacular, but there was a decent assortment of sweet rolls, bread and bagels, fruit, cereal, sausage and some hard-boiled eggs. Enough to get you going.

We liked the location, too - just a few minutes drive (or a bus ride) to Fisherman's Wharf or Union Square. In all, we enjoyed our stay there and would definitely stay again when in the area.
