More than 100 years old, we felt like we were living early 1900s. The owner decorated the Hotel perfectly for the christmas. People who admire Santa puppets or such christmas stuff must visit this Hotel in SF. Room was clean enough, there was a interesting smell in the Hotel, but not disturbed very much. I guess old furniture, carpets etc. Breakfast was not good enough but u wont stay hungry. The cookies were good. Free coffee in the lobby was good. It was really nice to have free coffee in the perfectly decorated lobby after a tiring day.

Room Tip: Do not reserve room close to elevator, elevator doors makes terrible sounds if it is still not repai...

I loved this hotel... Everything. Staff is very friendly and helpful. You can relax by a fireplace with tea after a stressful day in the city. I'm a bit of a nostalgic so I loved what felt like authentic Victorian ambiance with all the practical amenities. Your stay includes a complete breakfast too.

We stayed for a night and had 412 (a nice large room). The staff was really helpful and friendly. We arrived early and left late. We the offered park the car ($20 in San Francisco is absolutely fair) and depose the luggage - so we did not even had to ask for it. Breakfast included was also good. The only reason I do not give the full rating were some stains on the bed's sheet and the smell of the pillows. Although the linen of the pillows was definitely unused the pillow itself smelled like it has been in use for a looong time. This can happen. We discovered it late so we did not report it to the front desk.

Everything about the Queen Anne made me feel like I was in a different era. We stayed in the Mary Lake Suite. It was huge. The bathroom was huge. The room is a bit drafty due to a window that won't close or seal properly, but the heater worked well to counteract the cold intrusion. The bed was quite comfortable. Although we were hoping to have a spiritual visit from a ghost, we were left unmolested (unfortunately). Breakfast was okay, but just.

Hello (self-proclaimed) "Demanding Guest",
Thank you very much for your review. For those who don't know,
Miss Mary Lake ran the "Mary Lake School For Girls" that was
the first occupant of this grand architectural jewel back in 1890.
Some say her friendly spirit still lingers in her old quarters, Room 410.
Thank you for your kind words I'm sure Miss Mary Lake would approve!
(P.S. Are you sure the "draft" was actually the wind!? :)

We didn't like it as much as other reviewers did. We rated it Very Good, but if there was a Good rating, that would be our choice. This is a boutique bed and breakfast hotel located at 1590 Sutter Street, near Japan Town. Parking is expensive, $20 for one night. We stayed there one night to attend a family reunion.

Housed in a Victorian mansion with Victorian furniture and art, it really is unique. With an inordinate amount of heavy-looking dark furniture and red drapery, red sashes, some walls were red, and red carpet in our room, the place is quite a spectacle!

Service at reception is friendly but slow; we never saw more than one person working there. There are large common rooms for relaxing and reading, with two fire places. The elevator is old-fashioned, slow, and creaks and groans when it reaches your floor. It has a bench (for sitting) in it.

The continental breakfast was fine, with options for everyone. Unfortunately, the dining room opened 10 minutes, for which the attendant apologized.

Our room (205) was quite dark and the amount of lighting in the room for reading at night was insufficient. The king size bed was fine. The room had extremely high ceilings and was well maintained, except for the base boards and window sills. Because our room was so dark, we probably would not stay there again.

Thank You VeganChela,
We appreciate your review. This room 205 is the only one that does
not have the great old fashioned and ornate (previously gas) ceiling lamps.
I just had a look and noticed the room is bathed in natural light from large
windows during the day. But for evening and nights we are going to find
a solution to improve the general lighting and other issues. Thanks for letting
us know!

The hotel is filled with antique Victorian furniture, lights and artwork. The wood work is wonderful. We had a corner room on the 2nd floor on the quite side street. King bed, clean room, big tall drapes, fireplace, just wonderful. Very friendly and helpful staff. We walked from the hotel to dinner down on Filmore St and then on to the Fillmore Theater for a great show. Great location and easy walking distance to everything. Highly recommend.
