A very welcoming hotel in the heart of the city. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are airy and cozy, the beds are comfy, nice fireplace, windows that really open, breakfast was good, nice outdoor space, comfortable public areas, free wifi, in room coffee and tea and soft drinks, nice earl grey cookies, wine and nibbles in the late afternoon. This hotel is close to everything but a very quiet place to come back to and unwind.

Room tip: Rooms facing the courtyard are quieter. Room 55 was perfect for us.

Like many other people, we struggled to find accommodation in San Francisco at a price that wasn't astronomical. Let's face it, the White Swan Inn is still blooming expensive, but it's a darn sight cheaper than most other alternatives. It's a sweet hotel in a good location, near downtown and Chinatown. The rooms were a little old-fashioned but quite fun in their resolutely 'English' decor, and we absolutely loved the English collectibles and memorabilia on display in the dining room. Breakfast was edible, but not memorable. For us, the real gem in this hotel is their staff. Everyone was friendly and courteous, but the real jewel in the crown was Brendan. He fixed us up with dinner reservations and a taxi, and was on hand to provide helpful tips and advice on anything we wanted. It felt like nothing was too much trouble. I wouldn't rush back for the hotel experience, but the quality of service was truly impeccable.

We were struggling to find a hotel in San Francisco because everything was booked because of America's Cup being in town at the same time. We were able to get the last two rooms at the White Swan. The price was far too high for the quality of the hotel but we couldn't be too picky. Although they advertise as an "English Inn", the decor was enough to make you dizzy. The furniture was very old, so much so that you felt the springs of the couches and chairs when you sat down. The mattresses were also soft from age, the curtains were dinghy and ripped.
Breakfasts were adequate but not great.
Location was convenient and staff was very accommodating.

Stayed here in May 2013 for 5 nights while we explored San Fran. Check-in was quick and easy and then we were helped to our room with our bag etc. The porter chap then spent 20 mins with us pointing out all the areas on the map that we should visit and gave us some top tips about travelling on the trams etc and also told us areas to avoid and the days that the markets etc were on. This was a great and a useful introduction to the city.

The room was very clean and a real bonus that we had a small 'kitchen' area which had a fridge stocked with soft drinks which were free of charge.

The breakfast was great with some great tasty treats changing daily and the wine and nibbles in the evening is a great bonus and we got chatting to others staying at the hotel and were again able to collect some useful ideas etc for trips.

The location is very central and is walking distance to the main town square. If I visited San Fran again then would stay here again for sure.

The White Swan Inn gives you alot of quaint European charm and character. Great location close to Cable Car line and Union Square shopping and restaurants. Staff was friendly and over the top in accommodating us. When we had a problem with our showerhead they upgraded us to a large suite with no problem. When we came back one evening and missed the happy hour they brought a bottle of wine to our room complimentary! Rooms were squeaky clean, large, and cozy with a fireplace. Beds and pillows were very comfortable. The buffet breakfast selection was gourmet and exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend and would definitely stay here again.

Room tip: WIth rooms facing street you should expect a little street noise but fans are provided that mask it a bit.
