“Happy Birthday to Me”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2014

Our stay at the White Swan Inn was highlighted by the excellent service from the staff. It began with champagne in the room for my wife's birthday. It continued with an upgrade to a nice room facing the street and lastly we received a bottle of red even though we checked in late and missed the afternoon cheese and wine. The rooms are clean and spacious. If you go for modern stylings than this might not be the place for you but if you like a Victorian setting with a warm comfortable parlor and library, then the inn is for you. Very good value and within walking distance to the theaters, 3 to 4 blocks blocks downhill. Just don't forget that you have to climb uphill to get back to your hotel.

The customer service was wonderful. Andy helped up with our bags and was extremely friendly and gave us maps and lots of advice about things to do and to avoid.

The bed and blankets were comfortable and our room was very clean. The drinks in the mini frigid we're also included which was nice. The decor was a bit dated, but the fireplace made up for it. I wouldn't say the breakfast was gourmet, more of a continental breakfast. Some of the items weren't replenished after 9 am. The hors d'oeuvres and wine in the evening were delicious. It allowed us to mingle and enjoy great conversation with some of the guests. The maid also left us fresh towels on the door when we had our privacy sign up so we didn't have to call for them which was convenient.

The place is about a twenty to thirty minute walk from China town and about fifteen from Union Square. I would recommend this place to a friend and would stay there again.

Dear Sagitaria 1185,

Thank you for such a wonderful review of the White Swan! Andy has been a valued member of our team for quite some time and I'm so glad to hear that he took great care of getting you acquainted with the City. I also loved hearing that you enjoyed the bedding, especially because the linen package was very recently upgraded! In addition to those upgrades, we are soon to undergo a light renovation which includes evolving the design as well. I am sorry to hear that some of the breakfast items were not replenished during your stay. Our homemade breakfast dishes are all made fresh and there should have been plenty for all guests throughout service. I have shared your feedback with the team to ensure that your next breakfast with us will be as fulfilling and enriching as possible! Thank you again for your valuable feedback. We hope to welcome you back to the White Swan Inn when your travels return you to our incredible city.

With much appreciation,
Rebecca

Fabulous location and wonderful service! The staff were so friendly and welcoming. The location was perfect for getting anywhere around the city. The food was very good and the cookies through the day along with wine and nibbles in the evening are very nice touches. The Inn is so completely committed to its somewhat garish decor that it actually works. Though the room was very comfortable and clean, it was a bit worn - the net curtain was in tatters and the fold out couch was worn and lumpy. But we had an enjoyable 4- night stay and I would stay there again.

The staff were excellent and overall very happy. Some details need attention - eg the curtains in our room had big holes in. it is rather bizarre to set a minimum number of characters for a review! it is rather bizarre to set a minimum number of characters for a review!

Like others, we chose the White Swan Inn based on previous reviews. The hotel has a two room suite which met our criteria for three people. One room was a bedroom and the second a living room with a sleeper sofa. Both rooms had a gas fireplace which added warmth and ambiance. Each room had a refrigerator stocked with complimentary water and soda. And, each room had its own bathroom with hair dryer. The suite was spacious and offered free wi fi, TV, coffee and robes.

Every afternoon there are cookies in the front lobby, along with cider. Or, in the parlour you can have coffee, tea or water. From 5 pm to 6:30 wine and appetizers are available in the downstairs parlour. The fireplaces were on, plenty of sofas, chairs and an opportunity to meet fellow travelers - or not, depending on your preference. The buffet breakfast is also in the downstairs area. The breakfasts were ample for us but did vary from morning to morning. Sometimes there was lots of fruit, croissants, eggs and other mornings a bit more limited.

The location was perfect for us but be aware if walking is a problem there is a one block steep hill to get to the hotel from Union Square and also to/from restaurants, buses, and street car. Staff at the front desk provide very good information on how, where, cost to catch city transportation, including making arrangements to take a taxi to the airport. We did not have a car and didn't need one.

The White Swan is an older building with many creaks, bangs and city noise. Room doors have a bit of a gap so hall noise may be an issue. We always travel with earplugs but the staff at the front desk will provide you with some if need be.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would not hesitate to return. It is a wonderful change from chain hotels.

Have stayed at this property many times in the past 12 years. Very nice Bed and Breakfast, with nice Hor derve's and wine in the afternoon. Must stay in back of the hotel to avoid street noise. Comfortable bed and pillows. The bathrooms could be better upgraded. Excellent service from all and from front deck. Good location, not far from Union Sq. There used to be a small fitness room, which they have removed. I would like o see it reinstated.

Stayed here for a night (2 days) while in town for a meeting. Proximity to Union Square is what I call ideal : an easy walk away but far enough to avoid crowds and noise. The inn, itself is old, so don't expect modern amenities, including electronic entry keys or soundproof walls. That said, the room was large and comfortable. Fireplace was both charming and necessary: it was really cold the weekend we were there. We really enjoyed the wine and cheese social in the evening. Got to chat with strangers in an intimate setting before everyone went out for the evening. Also, lovely breakfast spread with the opportunity to chat with others or enjoy privacy. Your choice.
