“Nice hotel, full of character”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2010

As natives of England we were intrigued by the idea of staying in an English themed hotel. Well, it’s not like anywhere that you would find in England, but it is a very nice hotel in its own right.

The location is good, just a couple of streets down the hill from Grace Cathedral, and a ten minute walk up the hill from Union Square. Hills quickly become a theme in any trip to San Francisco!

Our room was huge. It had a very large, comfortable bed complete with resident teddy bear, just in case yours is unable to travel. We also had a small kitchen area and a separate dressing room, with lots of space to hang clothes and generally spread out. We had a strong wifi signal in the room, which was free to use.

The complimentary soft drinks in our in-room fridge were a nice touch, as was the wine reception each evening, allowing us to meet some very pleasant fellow guests.
We felt that breakfast was a bit poor. There was a wide selection available, but items were not replenished very quickly and the quality of the sausages and burgers was not the best. Our only other issue was with noise late into the night from a nightclub on the Saturday of our stay, but the previous 3 nights had been fine and a bit of noise is to be expected in any city centre location.

We found the staff very pleasant and helpful. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider staying again.

This boutique hotel certainly has a charm to it. We're boutique hotel people, but The White Swan Inn made me wish we'd just gone with a larger dependable hotel chain. Our room was the petite suite in the back of the hotel--it has a lovely garden--a rare gem in the city for sure. Access to the room was private, but through the hotel and outside which was a pain. The room itself was spacious, and included a nice gas fireplace. The bathroom was also spacious. So the potential is certainly there. Unfortunately the furnishings were well worn and tattered. Paint was peeling in the bathroom, sink faucet handles broken, and everything just looked rather old and worn--not antique. The mattress was quite soft and uncomfortable, though I'm sure fine for some. Replacing a few pieces of furniture would go a long way to making this suite comfortable. I personally thought it was kind of "icky" at times.
I have to say the staff was terrific--wonderfully accomodating and went the extra mile. The breakfast was great too. We ate next door at their sister hotel which had a larger breakfast room. Hopefully the standard rooms are better.

My husband and I stayed here in April 2010 for 3 nights. Upon arrival they informed us that we were only booked for two nights, they checked the system and sorted everything out. After this all i can say is we had a fab stay.
As first timers to San Fran we found that it was well located for Union Square, Grace Catherdral and lots of attractions.
The staff are very friendly and helpful if you ask them where places are.

The room we had was on the top floor at the rear of the property. The room itself was large with a very comfy bed. Being Scottish i appreciated the tartan bedcovers with the cushions and teddy bear. The rooom was lovely and warm and could not be falted. The only thing i did not like was that you could not move the shower head in the bathroom.

The breakfast provided in the morning was great everything from porrigde to eggs. Plenty of food and the staff are always topping it up.
At night they provide free wine and nibbles between 4.30( i think or it could have been 5.30pm.) The wine was realy nice and i found it a nice way to relax after spending all day outside on my feet.

It was a little noisy at nighttime due to the traffic but i used earplugs so i slept like a log.
Overall a great place to stay which i cannot recommend enough.

We enjoyed our stay at the White Swan Inn. We were greeted on the first night with a very pleasing cheese and wine party. For the three nights we stayed, the wine was fabulous -- though the cheese was a bit more variable! We resorted to visiting the nearby Hidden Vine for some cheese and wine to help keep up our cheese quota. In any event, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this to other travellers that are looking for a friendly and convenient location to visit San Francisco from.

We have stayed at the White Swan Inn many times in the past 4 years because it is a convenient location for us while visiting our kids. We cannot imagine trying another hotel (we did stay at Petite Auberge once but prefer the White Swan) because it has become such a comfortable and charming place we look forward to staying in. We especially like the cozy feel and enjoy ending our day by relaxing in front of the fireplace. Although some people may deem the hotel a bit shabby, we find it part of the charm and have become accustomed to the unending floral prints and teddy bears. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The complimentary breakfast is better than most but can get tiring if you are staying several nights. The afternoon wine reception is a nice plus. A fun museum to visit is the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. If you want to avoid the daytime school tours check out their Thursday evening adult only admission which is discounted and includes music and beverages for purchase while you enjoy the exhibits.

We had booked to stay here for a week in San Francisco and were very happy. When we were stranded because of the volcano the hotel could not have been more helpful. They extended our booking until we were able to get a flight home. The fact that breakfast is included saved us a fortune and the evening wine was a really nice touch which allowed us to meet and socialise with other guests.

We spent a week at White Swan Inn in Feb, 2010. We would not go back for a week stay again. I have mixed feelings about the place.
